Last time we rode, @basfnb was on my Rubicon and said it was randomly jerk to the right. I hopped on for a few minutes, and he was right, so I figure bad CV joint. So yesterday I took most of it apart, and found the upper a-arm bushings were shot, letting the arm move side to side quite a bit. Took the arm to the shop this morning, drilled and tapped the arm and added a grease zerk, burned out the old bushings with my MAP gas torch, then reassembled with new bushings, and greased the crap out of it. Greased the bearing and both ball joints while I had the knuckle in the shop, and reassembled it all with another CV out of my parts stash. That was, of course, after I mushroomed the first CV I tried to use when the hub wouldn't slide easily onto the CV. I cleaned the splines and tapped the hub on and off a few times, and shroomed the end of the CV in the process. DOH!

And Now it’s time to cut wood. Thanks for all the recommendations.

I would venture to say the problem lies with Wheeler's thumb ..... he needs to learn thumb control ----LOL

I’m glad you all are on this wood Stove journey with me. Here’s the rest of the days progress.

Heck I was barely tapping on it. Had to be quiet or I'd wake the wife at 5:30AM. She's not a morning person either!

I buy whatever is on closeout at Walmart. I have a LOT of oil right now. Wife ! about it constantly (it's next to the washing machine in the basement, LOL) T6 (got 2.5 gal jugs for $30) Mobil 4T ($2/quart) Valvoline ATV oil ($1/quart) Delo 400XSP full syn ($11/gal)

I had some big clamps that held the solenoid box on the motor on the Warn 8274 winches (old upright Warns). They work good! Any time I try using a hammer on these Hondas I regret it. Mushroomed a CV end this morning just barely tapping on it. KNEW I should have gone back to the shop and gotten that brass mallet!

then you very well could have some gears/gear forks/shift drum messed up inside the motor.

When you think about flying down dirt trails @60mph , think about that shoulder of yours , that was just a band aid kind of injury , compared to what can happen --- LOL

Sounds like a bad shift fork/gear in the transmission. There can be many things that can cause the damage but it's a complete tear down of the motor to inspect the gears. It's not the first one I've seen that the reverse gear was engaged with the forward gears (that machine was not worth fixing though).

When I am in the truck in the morning I listen to the Walton and Johnson talk show , pretty funny show , this morning they were talking about the mail with a guy that called in , he mailed a Thank You letter to someone and it was returned to him and his wife 6 year later ----

He's good. Back to patrolling. Couple of nights ago about 1AM the dogs started barking, and he saw a light behind the house back by the neighbors. Set out with pistol in hand. It was a cop doing rounds LOL.

Ohh that came out really nice! See the little bit of ash that feel out in the last picture? That is why I mentioned the stove board. It's near impossible to avoid I know it doesn't matter for your situation and agree personally but there is an example already 😂 Thank you for sharing!

You're right he already clarified he was using GN4. I had also posted... To elaborate... I love GN4 and run it any customer machines. My personal oil of choice nowadays is T6. Only thing I can get easily that is cheap and wet clutch. Maybe I do waste some oil by changing too often but I am happy with my dollars per mile right now and don't see a reason to change it.

with wheeler ?? nope, i wouldn't think so.... more like what fish said ... plus the bbk engine he's running ... i never saw a guy pay so much attention to detail on mods... besides fish.

Those EBC clutch plates are good. For the centrifugal, Armor Tech makes decent stuff, and you can get those from G&H.http://www.ghdiscountatvsupply.com/1988-2000-honda-trx-300-fourtrax-5-centrifugal-clutch-shoes-set-free-u-s-shipping/ Not sure about this one. I'd call and ask them who made it. http://www.ghdiscountatvsupply.com/1988-2000-honda-trx-300-fourtrax-one-way-clutch-bearing-free-u-s-shipping/ Something's awry on that 300 though. No way you should be replacing stuff again this soon.

As crazy as that looks, it might actually work. . . for a short time. Silicone tubing would be better. Could probably bend some thin walled stainless or aluminum pipe to work even better.

don't get me wrong ?, i know everyone has a way they like their atv...and i'm ok with this !. where i draw the line is: when you go changing stuff ?, get ready for odd results !. reason: when you change tires so to speak ?, this has a effect, this effect does other things to the drive line, some where in the drive line there WILL be a weak link ?, this weak link will break down, when it does..its gonna take other parts with it !. this is why i stay stock oem, when the dummies from the engineer table sit down and figure up the best way this atv will run ?, well..for the most part ?..THEY ARE RIGHT !. they don't design them to use as a boat !, they don't design them to be 10 ft in the air ?..they try to make them ( notice i said try ? ) to last as long as it can !. changing parts on something that IS NOT designed to handle ?..well..then your working on it 24/7 !..lol. anyway, do as you and any other owner whishes...it's your atv...UNTIL YOU BRING IT TO ME TO FIX/REPAIR/REPLACE PARTS ?!..THEN IT'S YOUR MONEY IN MY POCKET !..LOL.

You'll not kidding , I've seen a lot of foot problems been going around --- including some foot in the butt and foot in the mouth Did you know the Japanese pay a lot of attention to the health of their feet , there are more bones in the feet then the rest of the body

A couple of food for thought pics , left side and right side fuel intake , maybe a shorter hose ------ think the left side is a better way

Oldie but a goodie! Possibly one of the best videos of all time from a dog owner perspective. The size of the pair on this guy... Best part is the look on the Kangaroo after the incident 😅 Watch this one if you haven't! ~2 minutes

Black stove polish is what I did. Found some at menards this morning. I think it looks pretty’s good. Now I need 4 strong men and a good cook to get this thing in my basement.
  27. 2 points
Yeah. That’s a good call. I will probably install as is after a little more wire brushing. got out in the woods today. Guess I need to cut wood on a regular basis to keep the wife warm. here’s some photos for you to enjoy. the big oak tree still needs to be split and hauled home.

Eh, I'll disagree, and if anyone looks back at my post history from several years ago, I did NOT like the Hondamatics. That said, I own one now. Actually two but one needs to be checked out as I bought it "running but not pulling". The oil pump problems in the early models absolutely killed the Hondamatics, and yes, they are stupid expensive to replace, and few people know how to rebuild them. That said, they are unbeatable for seamless power, and the newer ones seem to hold up just fine, so long as you don't try to run them on mud and water. There are no gear reductions available to speak of (a 450 drive gear will supposedly get you 7%, but hardly worth the effort unless you're already in there), so they don't make good mud/pit bikes. BUT, for cruising the farm, work, hunting etc, they are great bikes. I say that about the 05-14 models, which have disc brakes, selectable 4wd, and of course, the updated oil pump. I don't know that I'd sink money into an 01-04 unless it was VERY clean to begin with. But I'm a convert. Yes, i still prefer my air cooled, footshift Hondas, and most of what I have in my stable are those, but after picking up a "too good to pass up" deal on an 05 Rubicon, I've kept it. They are good machines. And up in Canada, where used Hondas bring $$$, I think it would be worth fixing.

Yea , I will stick to mud and water and going a whole lot slower , use to ride like that on dirt bikes , a few trips to the ER and hospital broke me of that that is a long well maintained , trail , private or public ??

the link above mine is for insurance claims bro, has nothing to do with filing a claim for lost mail. tracking number this morning said the same thing its said for 3-4 days now..checked BACK into memphis,tn, left there again..and currently '' heading some where '' ?..running late, but still in transit ?..its said this very same thing for 2 straight days now. me and you both...it does not take a package/letter to get from memphis,tn to little rock,ar !!. and yes..you are correct..the usps sucks !.

I was ‘gifted’ this quad. It was already partially torn down. one thing I would do differently is I would have put it back together and heard it’s problems first hand. All my friend would say is it had a grinding noise when ‘in gear’ also I would have definetly done an oil pressure test which I would recommend you doing first on your project quad. The Hondamatic will not operate properly if oil pressure is low. It is actually a hydraulic pump/motor combo and uses engine oil as hydraulic fluid

agreed .... sure has a more classic iron stove burner look.

That kangaroo looks like he been hitting the gym !!!!
  36. 1 point
Yeah, your discs might be fine on the change clutch. Might just need to replace the centrifugal clutch. That's what was slipping on those 420's. The change clutch on both of them was fine.
  37. 1 point
I'm thinking maybe bigger tires with no GR. That would definitely do it over time. But even then, @Wheeler didn't put these things on that long ago, and those Dirt Racer clutches are good clutches. LOTS of guys use those on 300's with great results.

I know Harig over on the old board rebuilt them, along with @Brian Bertram. It appears Powersportsnation has now started rebuilding them as well. Honestly if I had a choice, I'd rather have one from Harig or Brian, because I believe they use a turned down, all metal bearing instead of the factory type with a plastic cage in the bearing.

looks to me like it would work just fine ... to me ... it's going to a trial and error type deal atomizing of the mixed gas might be an issue traveling that far.

Been drinking some coffee and mulling this over and I still can't quite tell if you are trolling us 🤣 That looks... well... it looks! Wonder how it would work really... Chain tensioner is awesome. That looks way more stout that most that you can buy. Also the dual pull handle looks awesome! Great solution for someone with limited mobility in one hand too. Definitely agree you are "pushing the rock up the hill" with this frame at all. I can tell that is nothing new though lol Cosmetically been thinking if you can avoid cutting or grinding the head at all that would be best and it appears that you have mitigated for the tilt in other places.

Why did I just watch this!!!! I’ve been eyeing up 400exs for a while. Watching that just got me going again! That looked like fun!!! But I have such an addictive personality, I’d want to build one liked slammed did!

Thanks shade. I checked out the prices, & they aren’t cheap there either. With shipping & exchange rate, maybe even more than here. I didn’t say my one way bearing, timing chain, or weights are shot. I just figure while I pull the cover off might as well do it all at once so I won’t have to worry about them over the next few years... I ran factory Honda friction plates on my old quad & they wore out one me one else as well. If we all ran everything like yourself (OEM EVERYTHING) it would be a pretty boring place around here... we wouldn’t have slams videos of his awesome 400ex, & Fishes array of modified 300s to say the least. They make aftermarket parts for a reason... (some which surely aren’t the best!) but that’s what makes working on, modifying & making it your own atv the way u want. I’m not sure if I’ll go back with EBC or go OEM this time.. but it’s great to have a choice.. Thanks though for letting me know where u get ur parts. Appreciate it.. I’ll call my local shop & see what they can price out for me too..

Shout out to @jeepwm69 for saving me today. I was trying to pull the centrifugal clutch with a three jaw and it just kept slipping off. Went and read some posts and found one on the old forums describing how you can use big hose clamps to hold it together. Going to go ahead and order the tool but got it off thanks to you!

update: got a text alert that my parts from 1080 LEFT MEMPHIS,TN AGAIN AT 9:24 AM THIS MORNING ?!!..ROFL. well...too freaking late, i ordered a brand new oil pump from rocky mountain atv ( and some other small parts to get free shipping ), and they are already shipped out. so...either way..i'm gonna finish this engine come h__l or high water ?!..lol. upper and lower ball joints i ordered show to be here tomorrow by FEDEX !!.( that i don't have a problem with.. unlike some do ? ), so i will be able to get the front end back together somewhat :-).
