HI: Big Welcome Here ---- This should help

The carb is is the correct number, I had it crossed with @retro and confirmed it's the right VE #. It's a few pages back. Internals were rebuilt with a new Shindy kit. Well fired it up last night, runs like a top of course. Took it around the block, no issues. Story of my life, but again it was cool. I can't really stretch its legs or get it to super operating temps good without trailering it to trail access. Which it was getting late last night so I didn't have a chance. I don't want to just let it sit there and IDLE forever as I know it's not good for it just to get it to temp.

Yes sir. New Oil Temp sensor Fresh Oil + new Filter Checked the valve clearances last night after the initial break in. The Exhaust valve had become tighter..

Beautiful day here. 21 degrees last night and got to 50 today. Sat outside boiling maple syrup at my friends place today.

You know, everything else in there was fine. The rubbing is because that black junk built up so much it was touching the rotor, it was that thick! The owner of the quad bought the new stator, not sure if it was oem but I doubt it. Yamaha had troubles with these first edition 700's eating stators. Eventually they updated the cover with an oil line to help cool this area. Most guys don't bother and just buy a new "better" stator when they fail. If it were my own, I'd hook up a volt meter to keep an eye on things.

@Fishfiles super dry air here out west. Very low low humidity. Back east on the coast where I rode a lot in winter still never had any issues. I like it when I learn something new!

Two things I e never heard of until reading this thread. Carb heater & Carb ice. If u adjust ur A/F for winter, & Summer, good to go. I’ve lived & drove my atv all winter back on the east coast & out west in the dry winters. Never heard or experienced this carb ice u speak of.

Funny that you mention the auto transmission on those Yama-haha's. It is a belt drive CVT system but unlike the Polaris & Can Am it has an engagement clutch. This is similar to Honda with a centrifugal, wet clutch that keeps the belt alive much longer. It's a superior setup and rarely gives trouble. BTW, I got the stator installed and it's charging just fine. On to the next stage, good grief this thing is hurting. Can't test ride it much now anyway, there's a lot of snow here and spring breakup has started - the trails are trash!

WELL,,,, I got it cranked and it shifts gears, so I think I'm out of the woods on repairs. The ground wires from the computer were broken at the connection point to the frame. Now all I have to do is buy the panels that are missing, replace the ignition switch and battery, seal up all the places he/she cut into the wiring harness, repair the seat cover and it should be good to go. Thanks for the help on finding the ground connection. I looked back through the manual and found the drawing. Guess I was looking to hard and went mentally blind in looking for it earlier. This is a great forum, Very happy to be a member

My guess the starter gear was worn and slightly stripped all 86ers including me ought to inspect their starters and probably replace them if the gear shows moderate wear or is skipping
  12. 2 points
Yeah, good points there guys. Well, the new stator is now installed - wasn't too bad. Funny how I've replaced lots more of them on Yamaha's than Honda's, good thing they're not a sideways engine with the magneto at the rear! Time to get more oil & coolant & a new battery before it can be tested. Then it will need further tear down since the brakes & bearings are a must. I feel sorry for the life some of these quads have...

I heard on the local radio station prices were expected to go to $3.00/gal reg. due to Texas refineries going off line because of the recent cold spell, the switchover to summer blend and more travel as the 'Rona restrictions lessen. Oil prices seem to hinge around supply, demand and speculation prices on the open market. If the current administration was really serious about their green energy plan the percieved demand for crude would drop. That's one nice thing about the system. If oil prices drop, green energy becomes less and less desirable. People can virtue signal all they want about being green but it comes down to what costs less in the end.

never had any issue here ether, i have a stock carb, @Wheeler rides in some super cold temps, never heard him mention any problems with his carb icing on his 300, but he's also not using a stock carb. I'm thinking it might be the fuel or letting the gas tank get low, and water accumulating, then the ice issue happens, i figure that more then the design of the bike, although, I'm not sure which models had / have carb heaters. i reckon the coldest temps riding I've seen is -10 ? just a guess. but you guy see much colder temps, here's it's the heat we deal with.

I doubt it " very , very " seriously that fixing the fan is going to solve your problem of not starting when hot , if it does then you have some lower engine problems , like bad crank or crank bearings , the fan should be addressed one way or the other ----- I would think the problem is more towards a bad spark plug , valve adjustment , carb problems , fuel delivery , CDI or coil producing a weak spark when hot , tank vent , maybe a cracked carb intake boot thats opening up when hot

Now that you mention that, the little Yamaha 80 I have that @basfnb's brother gave me wouldn't start. I looked and valves on them have a tendency to tighten up over time, keeping them from starting. I adjusted the valves on it and it fired right up (huge cloud of smoke, but it did fire right up LOL)

New sensor is in my hand. I went and bought it. Call me crazy. I want to give up, but I want to beat this issue. Thanks, Ill keep it in mind. Check your Private Messages! Stopped by the dealer to grab the sensor, went into the service area to pick some brains. One of the guys claims had the same issue. Too tight of a exhaust valve. Said, once hit, it expands and the gap on the exhaust is too tight to get going. Thoughts?
  20. 2 points
Hang in there. Maybe take a break from it if you have to. I haven't given up on one yet. I've had to walk away from a few, sometimes for weeks, before I came back to them. But at this point, all you have to lose is your sanity, and being sane is overrated.

I have a lot of parts to fit : 1988-2000 300A + FW , 1998-2004 450S and FM , 1985-1987 250 Fourtrax , 1986-1987 200SX ---- not going to ship big or heavy parts , like plastics or engines --- let me know what you looking for with a PM

@Goober Dennis's son is going to get me some pics soon, I'll post them, I'm still baffled as to why thy this 86 is missing those oem mesh screens the history of the bike is, it was purchased brand new buy an older fellah, never used much, and he passed away, and his wife just left it stored in there garage, till sarge cycles in columbia (closed now) got the bike, and LJ spotted it and worked a deal out, took it back to his shop, and just waited for a buyer (ME) ran fine , still had the original h-track tires, he told me it wasn't used much at all, so yes, I'm baffled on this fuel tank issue.

good deal, so now we know there's nothing wrong with engine, except the exhaust valves changing, which you've corrected, so a couple more things off the list you don't have to go for a ride to bring the engine up to running temps without having the engine idling you could just start it, and feather the throttle no more rpm then you would do riding, plus sitting still the engine would warm quicker, that's how i do my 97 when it's super cold out, also would give a chance to make another video.

Oil looked dark. No metal shavings, checked the filter over too looked good. Replaced it just to be safe. Filled it back up with Rotella again last night.
  25. 1 point
I did that last night, set the exhaust to .007, intake .006.

Thanks @Goober I'm keeping it original. I should have the holder and puller this evening and I'll take a closer look. The idler gears look great, along with the 18T side of the reduction gear and the 70T drive gear. Maybe someone was giving it lots of throttle while cranking the electric start? I'd hate to put all these good parts in and have it happen again.
  27. 1 point
Loosening that tight exhaust valve can't hurt.

What's crazy is you can see where the rotor/flywheel was rubbing on that charcoal stuff. Amazing that it still ran?! Owned by a rancher guy (no surprise) and has probably more hours than kilometres - over 10,000 I believe.

I don't think there are many ATV's that ever get returned to the owner. Even tho it came back with some problems you should be grateful it is back with you again....

Good point! I'm honestly not concerned about the fan, the fan worked and the fan comes on and off. My temp switch wasn't in spec before, so the fan operation wasn't running when maybe it needed too. With the new switch it's going to be within spec and will come on just sooner rather then later, I'm pretty confident on that already.

After reading that thread jdlmodelt linked , even though that thread is about a 450R and not a 450ES or S and is a totally different built carb , it still makes me farther believe your no hot start problem could be in the carb , I remember now my 450 was not running right , I can't remember the exact symptoms I was having , but pretty sure it is in my build thread , I do remember cleaning that carb multiple times and finally bite the bullet and bought a brand new carb and all was good after that , people say that any carb can be cleaned , I don't believe that is always true Looks like the carb part number for a 2000ES fits ES or S from 98-2001 and the code on side the carb is (VE93A A) , maybe it is not the right carb , maybe the carb has been rebuilt and the jets are not right , never know what the PO did , the thread is so long , I can't remember all you did with the carb

Wheeler , I was surprised to read you say you never heard of icing , cause I seen it happen down here in the south , after I read that article that TIM' posted , maybe it is because you'll don't have the high humidity like we do , sometimes we are 100% humidity -- Another icing problem I have is the propane tank regulator for the crayfish burner and heater on the patio freezing up , grill don't ever do it , I would guess cause it is a lower flow , but when the weather is just right , them regulators will turn solid white and shut down

i watched your virdeo, that farmers walk ....i know that one real well, i do that all the time while moving wood, so i reckon, I'm somewhat of a weight lifter ? the squats, well, i would fail there, i use my back more then lifting the right way, and i have been told many times, lift with legs and not your back, I'll have to keep that in mind, it's hard to break old habits, most likely why i had such back back pain a while ago.

John, welcome to our forum. There are a number of 420 owners here at the site and I'm sure you will be getting some responses soon. You said you have 2 420's, are there any comparisons you can make with the other one? Maybe see where the ground wires connect to the frame??

oh yes, we used have one at a country bar, which burned years ago, but before that, there was an insodent where a lady who had way too much, tried to ride and was thrown, i don't recall what injury she sustained, but a law suit happened afterwards, and the steel bull was removed, i agree mixing anything to numb one, and doing a sport like that is just asking for it, i reckon it was more of a deal for city folk to see if they could do it ? i and my friends never did, because for us, if you didnt do the real deal, and weren't broke into the sport, you were just begging for injuries, just like deadliest catch, i think those two are the top ten most dangerous jobs, which i would disagree with because bull riding is no job, it's a sport, I've had many close calls, but after my shoulder injury .... i got out of the sport, your right monkey some people aren't cut out for it. ah we've all don'e the dumb thing, lol, yah gotta enjoy the battle scars ;)

I've never noticed a difference in having one and not having one, even when using the Foreman in sub freezing temps during duck season. I have 2 Footshift 500's and a Rubicon now from that era, which use the same carb (different jets in the Rubi since it's a 499CC). I've had a couple that I've run with no carb heaters (usually the wires come off during removal for carb rebuilds) over the years with no issues. Also have a 350 Rancher and a 300 that are the kids, that don't have heaters on them. I've never seen any difference in one with vs one without. Try it without it. If your Foreman ever gives you fits and you think you need one, I'll be around LOL.

Well no reason to go the ON/OFF switch route with a brand new oil sensor, no? Unless I want manual control over the fan, right?

Freebo , I like you , so don't take me wrong , but I need to say something I have never told any one before on the atv forums , you have said at least 10 times you are finished with this atv >>>> I think you need to give up on this project , sell it for what you can get for it and lick your wounds , your not cut out to be a atv mechanic and have some really bad luck to boot , you never know the history of that atv , it might be haunted and need an exorcism , and you lack the most important thing , patience ----- if you really want to ride , buy a new atv and forget about working on them , live out the warranty and then take it to the dealership when it breaks down ---- if it were easy , everyone would be doing it ----- LOL --- I am just trying to get you to " feel it " !!!! Don't give up !!!! The marines say " the difficult takes a little while , where the impossible takes just a little longer "

We got 3-1/2 -4" of rain here Saturday night and Sunday. Thank God we got rain instead of snow out of this storm that dumped all that snow in Colorado and Wyoming. Today it rained mud, literally. The storm winds blew so hard out of Texas and Oklahoma the dust they picked up was washed out of the atmosphere by the rain, turned my white truck brown.
