  1. then just buy a new ring gear, be warned though..when you put new stuff with old stuff ?, they dont like it !. its best to replace ring gear and pinion gear as a set !.
  2. rmatv sells brand new ring gears, that is what i would do. you can check power sports nation to see if they have a ring gear ?. chances are though...if the ring gear is bad ?, the axle will be as well.
  3. final update: here she is all done, i've done all i can do with what i had to work with.

  5. nothing i've ever seen. deff not usa colors from what i know of. only time i've seen that color was with the cozmic gray trx300fw on some of the rare 1988 models.
  6. oem gasket, i can tell by the green tint color. left out from the factory ?, or someone ( NOT ME DANGIT !..LOL ) left it out when they worked on it.
  7. yeah..the front fender on the '01 450 would not take the buckets from a '04 450, because they mount to the underside a different way, so i had to use the '04 front fender, front grill, headlight buckets, but then i used the headlights from the '01 trx500faa..fit great !.
  8. just be warned: the headlight bucks may not attach correctly to the front oem grill ?, or the oem grill may not attach to the fender ?, honda got smart, and stopped us from swapping parts !..lol.
  9. never..EVER beat on the end of the crank with a hammer !. i whack on the crank lobes when fitting the crank back in. the trick is to rotate the crank when doing it this way, keeps the bearing centered. if you must hit the end of the crank ?, yes, a block of wood must be used.
  10. haha..you do not need a press to get the crank back into the case halves. a good hammer, good aim, and the crank will go right back into the case halves. MAKE SURE YOU LINE UP THE TIMING MARKS ON THE IDLE GEAR AND CRANK GEAR AS YOU ARE HAMMERING THE CRANK BACK DOWN INTO THE CASE !. always have the right side case half laying down flat, facing up, work with the tranny and all down.
  11. i did get my mod status back, but right after, i never went back, been stuck right here..just like jeep said..you can find all the help you need right here !. some of us members here MADE that site what it WAS ..but seeing how all of us ( most ) moved here, we got the best site on the net. when i spoke to retro about this, he said '' i'm thinking of building a atv site that cares more about members than money, i told him..you build it..i'll bring them..they will come..ahh yes...the '' field of dreams '' movie..ring a bell ?..lol.

  13. welcome to our forum. you are deff in the right spot to help you fix that old girl. the only down side to her is locating used parts ? as new oem parts are mostly discontinued today, so this leaves you with china ? ( never use china on this atv ! ) or used parts, and pray you get some good used parts !?!. with it being 30 something yrs old ?, chances are, the cam chain stretched too far, and jumped time. as for the lack of oil ?, oil filter in backwards ?, dont laugh...we see it all the time !. be sure to check those valves to see if they got bent by the piston ?, if they are bent ?, you prob wont find new oem valves anywhere ?, but good luck if ya do !. these model atvs are tanks...last longer than you will live ?!..but unless you fail to locate parts for them ?, its a paper weight ..sad...but true..as those atvs are some of the best atvs honda ever built and sold. with that being an '86 model ?, IT IS A ONE YEAR PARTS ONLY !!.. a few parts ( not many ! ) will swap over from '89 models..but for the most part..all parts electronic wise MUST BE FOR A 1986 TRX350 fourtrax...you can not use any models after '86 on that atv. some engine parts..yes..not many though.

  16. just guessing here ?, but does this atv have a bank angle sensor on it ?, if it does ?, it will be located left hand side, right above the muffler system on the frame rail. this cuts power to them when they detect a step angle in case of a roll over.
  17. well, you can old school, a bottle of super clean, garden hose, air compressor , then final spray down of wd-40. some brush rubbing maybe required here and there ?, but i used to do this alot way back b4 i bought a parts washer. if the engine has been sunk ?..YES !..the cases need to be torn all the ay down, and washed out !!.
  18. update: just placed the last parts order ( i hope anyway ?! ) for this project, ordered a brand new seat, brand new front skid plate, and all mounting hardware to mount skid plate, should get all this sometime by the end of next week ?, maybe by weds next week ?. i still have to finish painting rear rack, paint the front rack. get the air box installed, along with the oem snorkel , get the front wheel center caps installed. i hope to have it completed by the end of next week ?, we'll see how fast my remaining parts get here ?, rocky mountain atv normally gets my parts here pretty fast. once all said and done, i will list it for $ 3,600.00 cash, i think it will bring it.
  19. i'm surprised you did not say anything about the left rear tail light being crooked ?..lol. yes..i know it is..it just needs some screws back on the holder plate..easy fix.
  20. yes, i re-use those nuts all the time...no need in buying new, just impact them down with a good impact, re-stake them, problem solved.
  21. update: a few progress pic's. i'm tired, just called it a day/night.
  22. update: did finish that trx300fw brake job, although, i was not happy with the front brake lever movement ?, it was hard like pressure ?, but for some reason..it was not moving the brake shoes evenly ?, yep..i went back in, pulled the wheel cylinders down, each side had a seized piston. fixed that. moved back to this trx450fm/s, needed front headlights, my first thought was to swap over the headlights from the '01 450s, nope, does not match up to front fender..grrr. then i looked at the headlights and bucks from the trx500faa, they look the same , bucket's too ?, pulled one out, sure enough it fit great !, parts fich does not show any headlights from a 450 list with a trx50faa fitment ?, but it does fit in the trx450fm/s bucket !. solved that for now. now i have to put all this front fender together, well..one has bad tabs worse than the other, so i thought..ok..i'll use the '01 trx450s front fender...NOPE !..the front grill mounts to the fender different than the '04 fender and buckets for the headlights..dangit !. back to the '04 front fender, front grill, headlight buckets, with the 500 headlights installed in the '04 buckets, mounted to the '04 front fender , HAVE I LOST YOU YET ?..LOL. all will be oem, except the headlights..which will have trx500faa headlights mounted in the buckets. honda wants 100 bucks each for these plastic lights ?, nope..not doing it !. i'll make do with what i got , ( i hope anyway ? ). stay tuned..more to come.

  24. not sure if you know this or not ?, but the rocker box on a trx300fw, has been known to leak oil from a few places. one being the end of the rocker shafts , they require an o-ring, but they are a pain to remove. second: there is one spot i know of for sure near the spark plug , rocker box bolt, it requires a copper washer on it, look for a stamped arrow near the bolt holes, if there is an arrow facing the bolt holt ?, it must have a copper washer on that bolt !. cam chain end cap shaft, right top side, black, they tend to leak from there. decompression level, there is an oil seal there, they wear out, and leak oil. last but not least, yamabond on the rocker box !!. DO NOT GET ANY ON THE CAM JOURNAL FOR THE OILING !!!.
