crap, i'm stuck on the old 350 models..my bad..brain is fried right now..lol. i need to be in the woods !..lol
  4. update: well, this other '86 trx350 fourtrax is putting up one heck of a fight with me !. i got to do a test fire the other night, idles great !, but wont rev up worth a crap. i had a pile of carb's to choose from that i brought home from catfishes place, picked out the easiest one to clean, installed it, fire right up, idles great, but bog's and back fires when giving it throttle ?, not sure what the problem is, i did pull the cam chain slack adjuster out to check the cam chain slack, it looked very good too me. i want to check the timing, but i got the stator side back off, as the gasket that was on the stator i got from catfish's place had a oil leak pretty bad in one spot, so had to pull it back down. lord i hate lifting these old girls on their side...THEY ARE VERY HEAVY !..LOL. so now its on its side, stator cover is off, i just ordered two left side cover gaskets ( one is a spare, they all are the same from '86 to '89 ), two header pipe copper gaskets, one gasket for the muffler to header pipe. i had some bonus bucks left over from the 450 build, OTD was $ 31.40 for all this. looks like i will be on hold until after i get back from the deer woods, will be leaving very early friday morning, headed south down around warren. won't be back until tues or weds, or unless i get a deer or two ?, and come back then.

see, what you fail to understand is, if the fan control unit is bad or going out ?, it shuts the c.d.i. down, so by adding a toggle switch to the atv, all you are doing is getting power straight to the fan, bypassing the fan control unit. in the long run, he will be stuck miles from home. need to edit this..the toggle switch will work on the 450's..my statement here ONLY applies to the old school 350's..sorry bro !.
  6. i tried calling you, i need to know what year model you want these for ?, as the '86 is a one-year only !. i've got two '86's in the bone yard, no clue what either shape is in ?. he wants 200 for a set+ plus shipping. if this is for any other year model ?, he has a lot to choose from, just only has two '86's left in his bone yard. let me know !.
  7. did you ohm out the stator ?, and yes, oem c.d.i. all the way..stay the heck away from china crap !.
  8. lol, you called me yesterday about this, you said the ramps gaveway ?, i started to ask ya...did he tie the ramps down with anything ?, time and time again..i have seen folks loading atvs up into trucks, or unloading them, and not have the ramps tied down..sure enough..this happened every time !..TIE THOSE RAMPS DOWN FOLKS !.
  9. bro, the parts bike ( 1986 ) i removed the stator from today still has the front end on it, do you need the front drive axles ?, if they are good ?, you know it wont be cheap to send them to you...right ??.
  10. i'll be in the woods come saturday morning 11-13-2021, in my new deer stand..waiting for that big buck to step out in front of me !. will be there for a few days.
  11. rofl..i wonder if the game warden will consider this to be legal for it to hunt , now that it has a orange vest on ??..lol.

the easy way to test the fan: unplug it from the harness, on that model, left front side of fuel tank, look for two bullet connectors, one will be blue, the other will be green. unplug them, connect them to 12 volt dc ( a battery ), if fan is good ?, it will kick on. second way : right side of atv, behind right side panel, where all the connectors are snapped into the frame there is a single blue bullet connector, it leads to the oil temp sensor at very bottom of rear engine. unplug it, on the harness side of connector , turn key on, ground the connector to a good ground source, when you do this, the fan should kick on. depending on if fan is good or not ?, will mean if you are out riding hard, and the fan never kicks on, and you know it is good ?, this tells me and you that the fan control unit or the oil temp sensor that i spoke of earlier in this post is bad. DO NOT UNSCREW OIL TEMP SENSOR UNLESS YOU ARE VERY FAST AT PUTTING NEW ONE BACK IN ?, or you will lose a crap load of engine oil..lol. its best to remove the oil temp sensor with the bottom skid plate off, because its a royal pain to get to the oil temp sensor with the skid plate not only installed ?, but also with the skid plate off !..lol. it takes some tricky stabbing to get the wire back onto the end of the sensor even with the skid plate off !. i highly say drain the engine oil before you go unscrewing the oil temp sensor if you must replace it !!!!!.
  13. update: spent all day out at catfish's place today with a shopping list for parts for this second 1986 trx350 fourtrax. brought home a lot of parts. main thing i needed to do was get the CORRECT stator, flywheel, starter gears, starter, spark plug coil. around 8pm i unloaded my truck of all the parts i am listing here in this post ( there are more parts i also got ). got the stator all cleaned up, tested, installed, installed starter gears, starter, coated stator edge with some yamabond in one bad spot where the gasket was missing, bolted the stator on, followed with all the starter parts. everything plugged in, spark plug in spark plug boot, laying on engine, hand cranked the kick starter a few times..I GOT SPARK !. then i installed the air box, needs a lid..thought i had one here ?, but did not, i'll grab one from catfish's place next time i am out there. by then..it was late, and i was beat, called it a night on this old girl for now.
  14. first, check the upper and lower knuckle bearings, see if they are bad ?. then check each tie rod end. start with wheels centered, then center the steering with the adjustment under the steering shaft, its a short rod just like the longer tie rods are made.
  15. i do not know the condition of the front drive axles ?, i also do not know if catfish will part it out even if they are good ?.
  16. haha..not gonna happen. but !!..if i can't get the second 1986 trx350 fourtrax together and running ?, catfish might part it out ?. you will have to drive up here and pick it up..i sure as heck ain't shipping the rear end !..rofl.
  17. here she is all ready for a buyer !. i did not wash her, i'mma gonna let this one ride just like it sits.
  18. i will not use any plow stuff on this, i will take the right side off.
  19. when doing engines from scratch ?, ALWAYS MAKE DANG SURE THE CAM CHAIN IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY !!. you will need to pull front cover, and make sure you installed the cam chain with the punch mark facing up on cam sprocket to the timing mark right above the sprocket , it faces down. these two marks MUST LINE UP !. once that is done, at back of motor, pull start cage has a line on one of the tangs, it runs from front to back on tang. behind the cage, a raised arrow is stamped into the stator cover, both of these timing marks, cover and tang MUST line up. once you have both front and back inline ?, the piston will be top dead center. once you get to the valves, i always rotate the crank from the back on the 17mm flywheel bolt, as i turn the crank backwards, i watch the intake valve, if you had the marks set all correctly ?, the intake valve will start to go down as you rotate the crank backwards..keep in mind, you will have to turn the crank backwards a good bit before the intake valve starts to go down. if after a good ways..the intake valve does not move...the exhaust valve moves instead ?, then you were on top dead center on the exhaust stroke on top dead center instead of compression stroke top dead center. also..as you very well know..i do not use feeler gauges !..lol.
  20. i tried recovering seats many yrs ago..that is one skill i am not good at !..lol. i'll let the pro's recover seats if they are worth fixing ?, otherwise, i'll buy a new seat if they are still around from honda ?.
  21. yep..does not matter what year the 300's are ?, they still are gold today !. every trx300 i build ?, they do not last long at all when i put them up to sell them !.
  22. every once in a while, i travel to knoxville,tn. to visit a close friend of mine, he lives outside of knoxville. i built him a 2003 trx450fm just like the one pic'd above ^^^, cept i put high lifter front disk brakes on his, and a warn pro vantage 2500s winch on his.
