Update and possible purchase question.

Recommended Posts

I'm doing good, update, I'm still helping my family and looking for work nobody is hiring, plus waiting on DMV so I can get my license squared away, 1st they said Dec 3rd now they can't take me until February sometime (witch is what there saying now) I was wondering about what to buy for the farm.  There would be to much if I wrote it out so my Facebook links are easier.

Choices are Foreman or Rancher.  I thought about a new rancher but I'm not spending.

I can do one of each. 2012 Foreman has 5,970 miles. This virus has hit me hard far as doing anything. I'm gonna wait to see what happens at the beginning of next year money wise before I do anything. I'm not giving up no matter what I gotta do, I'll have a happy life. CJ7 jeep and be like everybody else on the road or help on the farm.

I would pass on all 3 personally.

The foreman because of the water modifications. Price is only ok. It has been in deep water and likely not serviced correctly afterward.

The 420s are alright but both are WAY too much money even though they are low hours. 6k for a 420 is out-of-control IMO.

2k maybe 2500 USD for one in very good stock condition. Wait for a 500 Forman ideally but something under 3k

I agree.  The 2012-2013 Foremans are odd duck years too, so parts for those are going to be harder and harder to find over time.

^^ I agree I'm gonna wait n see but incase I can get the DMV took care of I found a super duty for 2,500.00 transmission is going out, clutch not far behind don't think I'll do that

Found two jeeps, the black one has 90,000 miles automatic owner says needs restored unknown condition but looks good, the other has 124,000 miles is a good runner.  All depending on the DMV situation.

Looked at that rancher, the yellow Foreman how reliable is the transmission, service, parts availability ECT if I get it depending on my situation?

My bad on the yellow one. I didn't see that it was an ES. Avoid.

Edit: The orange one is not a Rancher but avoid ES on any model.

I do, I'm not giving it up but I'm looking for comfort and tire options. Still going to keep it just looking for another main work atv.

oh well for a work atv a foot shift, and SRA..... a good  condition 300, or 450, 500 is what I'd be looking for, people who have 300's aren't up to parting with them, lol, i know you a tad far away, but check the one jeep posted ... and always ... there's shade, no telling how many great builds he's done, a number of them i would have jumped in a sec!!

is the 124.000 mile one an  auto, or stick ? I've not heard of much trouble from the stick or auto on those,  but i would check with jeep, i think he's had more dealings with them, then anyone here.

The top one is likely rusted out.  When you see rocker plates like that they're ALWAYS covering up rust.

The 79, if an automatic, will have a TH400 and quadratrac.  Full time 4wd, and they don't hold up well unless they have been meticulously maintained over the years.  Quadratrac is a chain drive transfer case and the chains are bad about stretching on them.

CJ's aren't hard to work on, but you absolutely do not want to buy one that has rust.  If you can see rust, that means there is a lot that you cannot see.  Look for a faint line of spot welds along the sides right above the rear wheel wells.  If it's smooth, you have covered up rust/bodywork.  Rockers rust out.  Front fenders will rust from the inside out.  Rear frame rails rust out between the rear axle and the back of the Jeep.

I would not recommend a CJ unless you have another good dependable daily driver.  I love my Jeeps, but they aren't fun to daily drive.

76-79 were narrow axles, automatic was a TH400 with quadratrac, manual transmissions had a Dana 20 transfer case (good) and came with either a T150 3 speed (good) and a T18 4 speed (best).  The good thing about the early Jeep is no smog crap and you could get a 304 V8.

80-81 you could get a V8, but you rarely see them, and they had a Dana 300 transfer case, which was great, except on those years only they had a short tailshaft that was weaker than the later Dana 300's (transfer case shifter has a dogleg at the top).  Still good Jeeps.  Automatic was a Chrysler 999 (good), manuals were an SR4 (curved shifter, reverse is up to the left, and these transmissions were boat anchors and should be avoided at all cost), and a Tremec T176, which are good medium duty 4 speeds with a straight shifter.

82-86 you got wider axles (increased stability), but you'll have to remove all the 80's smog crap that is a nightmare.  No V8.  Transfer cases were super strong Dana 300's, transmissions were TF999 for automatic (good), T4 or T5 manual transmissions (curved shifter, reverse is down to the right) which were crap, and the T176 which is a 4 speed with a straight shifter.

All of mine are 85's.

Look for an 08 Foreman TRX500FM. foot shift, without power steering, in camo. They run about $4K.

TRX500FPM is OK too — power steering is one more thing to worry about tho

The daily driver part is just it. I been trying to look for something. My criteria is not agreeing with what's out there.

No rust, stick shift,  fairly low miles, easy to work on  the jeep is all I could find other than atvs.

Found this. Was mainly looking for fuel injection foot shift, but if this one has something IDK about I'd look into it

That should be a good one.  Only weak spot is 1st gear, and it's usually fine unless the machine has been abused.

Might be able to have the meter fixed, or you could buy a used one for $100 or less.

Still high as !.  I sold my recently rebuilt 08 Foreman with PS for $3K a month or so ago.

Yeah Scramblers have gotten high.  Most snub the 4 cylinders, but the 4 cylinder CJ's usually had 4.10's in the diffs.  Buying a I6 and swapping it in is cheap and easy.  Regearing two diffs isn't.

Here's Dad's 85 Scrambler.  Base model, 258 with T176.  Has a hair under 5K miles on it now.
