You could be right, as I was tapping the old crank out the trans fell out. I have a manual and put it together and tore it back apart 4 times trying to make sure it was right. Good lord I was hoping for something else. I got another engine I need to be building.

Yea had the same problem Chadmy split engine fell off a cardboard box and trans parts all over.  Had the breakout from the manual and put it together wrong the first time.  The middle fork was stuck in the wrong slot and the shift drum would get stuck when trying to move.  Figured that out and then it would shift smoothly before putting the engine back together.  Make sure you move the shift drum manually to make sure it goes thru the gears......

If I have to crack it back open you bet I will make sure it's 💯 percent correct.

That was my 1966 Chevy II 421 small block 18 degree bowtie heads powerglide tube chassis car ran 5.6-5.7 1/8th mile. Sold it to get the Camaro.

If you can't get any neutral out of it (regardless of the indicator) something isn't right on the transmission.  It could be as simple as a washer in the wrong place or a gear upside down.

I about forgot what I was going to post after the vehicle porn..

Those 6.0 ls motors sure are bullet proof. We thought about going that direction with my brothers trans am. Decided just to rebuild the 5.7 ls1 instead. Looking back i think he regrets it. But his first pass was a 12.2 in the quarter N/A. He just got a ls6 intake and our goal next year is get it to run an 11.9 without spray. But we built it to handle plenty of spray just incase he gets stupid. Like i know he will....lol

It actually has a Dana 60 with a spool. Old bracket car, back halved with 31x14 tires. I'm gonna do my best to put it back on the street. Waiting on a title right now.

I think the dog would take off a leg if someone other than Chad got close to the GM product.

Oh wow, that Camero is beautiful.

Can't help with the transmission issues.   At first glance sounded like you got the gear position switch put in 180 out, but if that were the case you'd run out of gears without being able to shift 1-5.  That said, that would explain why you couldn't find Neutral.

I would check that before you tear the motor down again. Can you find reverse?

I just wonder if he installed a gear on one of the shafts upside down ?, been there, done that...lol.

After today I'm off for 9 days in a row, burning the last of my vacation, 12 hour shift worker in a chemical plant, so I plan on going home tonight and at least getting the engine pulled and back on the bench. I'll update you guys on what I find. Surely do appreciate the advice and help.

On mine I was able to stick the middle fork either above or below where it was supposed to slide into the countershaft.  Everything worked when turning the drum but would hold up and move only with some extra help.  Once I figured it out the shift drum would manually turn thru all the gears smoothly up and down.  If I had put it together like it was I'm certain there would have been shift problems, maybe not exactly what Chad has but issues...Had some great advise to help set me on the right path...

My money is on the Gear position switch turned 180 degrees out when the rear cover was put on. The shift ECM goes wonky when that happens. Thankfully it takes only 5 minutes to find out using a multimeter.

This is for retro. This is my other project. 1965 Chevy II. Mini-tubbed, narrowed 9inch. I have had to replace the floor pans got most of the cage in. Gonna be a street car with a turbo 4.8. I'll post an update asap, about to get busy on the Rancher.

I'm gonna bet that this is the issue. We will see, hopefully shortly.
