Yep you’re right it is a pain in the rear I usually use a little alligator jumper clip or a piece of wire to extend it

that noise you’re hearing is probably not coming from your two plugs upfront it’s probably your fan control box relay

if you have somebody to tap on it like I said when you ground that wire and have your key on you can see if your light comes on and off or if your fan comes on and off that’s a sign that you have some fractured solder joints inside of the module from heat and vibration over 20 years

Then you can try baking it if you want or you can pick one up on ebay-stick with new or used OEM- stay away from the China garbage

here it is, it only applies to '' after '87 models on the 350's.

What I got out of that is   if the " Fan  Motor " seizes it will cut off power to the " Fan Motor " -----   not cut spark to the engine

I may be wrong , but I have always thought 12 volts is applied to the fan when the ignition is turned on , it is the ground that is applied when the sensor reaches the set temp and triggers the fan controller  --------  that is how I ran the toggle switch , tapped into the ground cable at the fan , so it is like an over ride ----

I am still not finished modifying my 2000 450 with Retro's dual fan controller

Hi: If you still have the FMC connected on your 450 -- it only gets it 12VDC from the FMC -- the sensor tells the FMC to turn the fan on.

I did the same thing but just tapped a ground wire/switch into the blue temperature sensor wire

I know to turn the fan on when my lower legs start burning... lol

But my way only works if your FCU is working properly

did you know the TRX400 and 450S FCU are interchangeable?

did you know they’ll also run a TRX300 fan? Maybe not the 98-00, but it’ll fit 93

Tell us more about the 300 setup

Some stock TRX300s (I don’t know what years) came with an alarm box and flange mounts on the frame for a fan option.

the fan option kit came with an FCU, fan, L&R shrouds, mounts and a fan power wire. The instructions say to swap the FCU with the alarm box, remove a pin from the lower harness connector and replace it with the power wire. The alarm box and FCU are different sizes so the FCU has its own rubber hanger.

the TRX300 FCU OMRON part number is G8D-21H-2B; the TRX400 FCU OMRON part number is G8D-21H-2D. i don’t know if they’re identical; however when i was troubleshooting a flickering oil light on my TRX400, i noticed it was the same Honda part number on my 450S. swapped the FCU and my TRX400 oil light worked as it should. Then i noticed the OMRON part number.

so i swapped the TRX400/450S FCUs with the FCU on my fan-equipped TRX300. All the oil lights came on as they should. Now, I didn’t run the fans because it was too cold to get the machines hot enough—but the oil sensors and FCU should be calibrated to the same activation settings.

So if one wanted to fab up a fan for a 300, that fan could be mounted and then use that FCU to run it without having to cobble together a bunch of wiring.....?

I think so—the 400/450 FCU is $200. Now $160 at Rocky Mountain atv! I’d be interested to see if the 400 fan is the same as well!!

a quick way to check fitment is to install a TRX400/450 FCU into a TRX300 (not 00) and see if it will run. 00 has the alarm box integrated with CDI

I corrected after looked at the schematics and alarm boxes are shown to be separate for 98, 99. So FCU should work for these two also

Just thinking this could be a way of having a fan on a 300 without some sort of rube goldberg contraption, or having to find rare factory 300 fan stuff.

I have a 1992 and a 95  300 that I  added the fan myself , got and used  a brand new automotive fan , made my own mounting  bracket , cost under $50 for the fan  at the time of purchase  ---- I wouldn't give  $100 for that OEM fan , to big , bulk and high amp draw with less air flow ,  $799 and then  adds $19.99 shipping that's  insult to injury , he is smoking crack ,  LOL

The newer automotive fans are probably more efficient and in wide variety of size.

i am looking for Honda atv bullet connectors and those rubber plugs. Anyone have a source besides salvaged harnesses? I’m down to a nearly complete late model TRX300 harness and don’t want to cut it up.

im going to the Honda shop later this afternoon. I’ll stop by parts
