"Free" 2004 450 Foreman, now a build thread.

Recommended Posts

Have started ordering fenders for this one.  @shadetree pointed out that the harvest beige fenders from a TRX400FM will fit the 450's, so that's what we're going with.

The rear beige fender is discontinued, so I got a NOS coming from ebay.

The rest of the bits are still available in tan.

One thing Shade did warn me about was the headlights/grill from the early 400/450's will NOT fit in the new 450 front fender, and since the grill and headlights from this 04 are the newer style, they wouldn't bolt in to an early 400 fender.

That said, they made the 400 up until 2003, so the 2002 and 2003 400 front fender uses the same grill and headlights as the 02-04 450, so I just need to make sure I get the 02-03 beige front fender.

I think my buddy is going to put LED pods in instead of the factory headlights, but just in case he changes his mind, I'll order the 02-03 beige front fender so he can use the stock headlights if he has to.

I looked this morning, and the 02-03 400 grill and headlight buckets interchange with the 02-04 450 stuff, so looks like the change was in 02.

yeah..the front fender on the '01 450 would not take the buckets from a '04 450, because they mount to the underside a different way, so i had to use the '04 front fender, front grill, headlight buckets, but then i used the headlights from the '01 trx500faa..fit great !.

So, did they forget the oil screen at the factory, or has someone been in here before?

The gasket being there means I didn’t take it out and misplace it….

As far as what color it is  , I'd call it  Robin Egg Blue , which I think was a color in Canada only

Oil screen is up in there and clean.  It’s just under the gasket.  Figured that out when I went to add one out of my parts bucket.

as for the gasket, it looked good for 95% of it.  The couple of places that looked iffy got a thin bead of Hondabond over the gasket.
I normally don’t replace gaskets unless they tear/come apart on disassembly.

okkkk..don't blame me when you see it leaks oil later on..lol. i do not trust 20 something yr old gaskets, spec when they are split ?!. i always...ALWAYS ..replace main gaskets on center cases..that is the last place you want an oil leak !. outer ends ?, not so much work..center ?..yikes !..lol.

Hope you two killjoys are happy. I hate scraping gaskets.

Next thing you’ll tell me I shouldn’t weld a 10 mm socket to the timing chain tensioner on a 300….

Now when years go by and this thing doesn’t leak, I’m gonna come to you in and Fish and blame y’all!

if you use a new gasket, and it still leaks oil ?, then this is a mechanic issue..not words of wisdom issue..lol. this is a center case gasket, NEVER CHEAP OUT ON THIS GASKET IF IT CALLS FOR IT ?!!. all other gaskets ?, not a big deal..easy to replace, where is the center case gasket..its not easy to replace...YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS !!...LOL. i thought i taught ya well ?, but i guess you fell asleep at the wheel during that class session..lol. anyway..thank you for doing it the correct way bro !!.
