Chainsaw carbs.....

Recommended Posts

Went out this morning, trimmed a little on the plate that goes between the carb and cylinder so the top cover would go on correctly, and after that I fired it up.  Started as it should after a few pulls.  Idles and runs good, and after making sure the oil pump was pumping oil I put the bar and chain on it and buzzed it a little.  Ordered a new chain for it on Amazon (Oregon, $12.99) and will do a little bucking behind dad's house when the new chain comes in.

This thing uses a 3/8 low profile chain, .043 so not a lot of chain options, but apparently bumping up to a .050 bar and chain (where I would have more options) tends to leave these little lightweight guys a hair underpowered, so guess I'll try it out what the current setup and see how it does.  For my intended use I think it will be fine.

Yes it will rob power. That is a "narrow kerf" chain specially designed for small Stihl saws. Kerf is the fancy word for distance between the points of the left cutter and the right cutter.

A easier way to explain “kerf” is: kerf is the width of the cut. Carpenters and wood workers use this term a lot referring to their saw blades when the amount of wood being removed with a cut is critical.
