Dying spark from the ignition coil

Recommended Posts

New member here and let me say thank you to everyone that post on here and all the helpful reply's. I'm running into a unique situation and cant seem to find much information on it. Trouble shooting a friend of mines sons 2020 Honda Foreman 520 for not starting. Has 130+ compression, New plug, Cleaned carb, new injector, good fuel pressure and cleaned and ohmed the throttle and timing position sensors. What I am getting is initial crank and idle maybe 5 seconds then dies will not crank back until I take the plug out that will be wet and blow cylinder out then it cranks and does the same exact thing. I took the plug out, cleaned it and held it to the head and have great spark for about 4 seconds them very weak spark. If I give it a second and turn it over again I get the same thing great blue strong spark that dies down to weak blue spark in about 4 seconds of turning over. The coil ohmed out at around 3ohms. What say you guys bad coil? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Welcome aboard.

I don't think we have a FSM for a 520, but for troubleshooting a 420 manual should work.

Look at the toolbar at the top of the page under "service manuals" and download the 2014-2019 420 Rancher manual.  Look in section 5-5 and it will give pretty detailed instructions on troubleshooting the ignition.

You can also try running a jumper wire from battery + to the red/black coil wire.  That bypasses the fuel pump relay and rollover switch, in case one of those is going bad and cutting your spark.
