Have you changed the fuel filter lately? Those models will spit and sputter about when the fan would turn on when the fuel filter starts to get plugged. Once they cool off a little they run normal.

hi, just to say thanks for your help, did fit a new filter after been waiting two weeks to get it delivered!! and its working great now!!!

    thanks again

  2. Hi, sorry had to leave the quad for a little while, did try again this afternoon, did work up and down for 30 minutes then lost drive again!! Stop it then came back 10 minutes later and was fine again!! When on normal road and was running good, put the mower back on and 15 minutes later same thing again!! It doesn't like been driven on very slow pace I think ~5 mph, has you said maybe the filter but the engine doesn't spot or sputter before it stop! You are maybe right, will have a go at taking it appart!! Look like a big job to me!!! Can't see anything to look at now!!!

    Cheers Chris

On the 2016 the bank angle sensor is up under the handle bar area. Since the motor still runs and your just loosing drive that is not the issue. Is this a DCT automatic rancher or the foot - electric shift version? If it's the DCT is your oil level good and checked correctly?

Sorry my mistake, year is 2010/2011, gears on foot, don't know about the gear oil, did check the drive shaft and engine one, all fine.

just guessing here ?, but does this atv have a bank angle sensor on it ?, if it does ?, it will be located left hand side, right above the muffler system on the frame rail. this cuts power to them when they detect a step angle in case of a roll over.

Thanks very much, will have a look at it in the morning

  6. hi all, got a problem with my 2016 420 fourtrax, the engine goes on safety mode (i think) when i am using my fail mower behind it( on first gear, around 5 mp/h), going up steep terrain, the engine will only restart after waiting a few minutes, no such problem on flat road, could it be the carburetor or else problem??
many thanks for your help, chris

and aslo thanks you all for your help to rebuilt my drive shaft..

Or is it going to leak again? And what kind of oil? Need to get bearings for the swing arm..did try everything and still can't get the axle out  and all the nuts are seized anyway...

welcome, the oil seals are bad. from the looks of the pic ^^ ?, its full of mud and water. you could pull the left rear side down, and replace the o-rings and oil seals this way ?, but its best to pull the whole diff, split it, change out all the oil seals, o-rings, and bearings when its apart. i'd bet money the bearings are about shot ?. with a few tools, you and all of us here can turn you into a good atv mechanic in no time !.

struggling already, skid plate and oil off but dont how to take  the diff off without taking the axel off

If you overfill those diffs, they will leak like yours is.  Yours is "overfilled" in the sense that water has gotten in, mixed with the oil, and is now leaking out.

If you want it to last (these are expensive to replace) then you'll need to do as shadetree and fish recommended, take the diff off, take it apart, clean it out, and put it back together.

You don't need to be a mechanic to do this.  It's just nuts and bolts.  Take it apart, clean it out, replace seals and possibly bearings, and put back together.

If the pinion bearings are loose, then the job becomes a little more difficult.  Simply taking the diff off and splitting it to inspect is just removing nuts and bolts, and we'll be happy to walk through it with you if you want to try it.

will have to try it as soon as , need to know what sort of tools and witch seals or bearing i need to buy

  12. Hi, knowing me and tools, a pictures and instructions will be needed , if anyone know a website who does this kind of thing that will be great, did look at some on YouTube but seems too complicated. I need to have a go at it anyway if not the atv will have to go...

  13. Hi, you all sound very encouraging to do it he job myself but don't think I will have all the right tools for it, did look around for a spare diff but prices are so hight!! And no the atv not been swimming, just been using my flails mower and that happens!! Feel like mayo!! Oil and water!! Going to look around whatever help I can get and will let you posted, thanks all for your help again
