If they are stock. 14/39. A 13/39 will be good for your 22 tires. Or you can go 14/41 but if your doing the 22s for ground clearance that would be counter productive. So i would just drop the front to 13. You wont have to modify anything. Case saver can stay the same.

    Ok, thanks for the reply.

First thing you will have to do is confirm what you are running on it now. Unless you purchased it new. Most likely someone has already made gearing changes. Your stock gearing should be 14/39

I will double check that when I get back home but I am pretty sure they are stock.

  3. Happy Saturday!

I want to put some new rear tires on the bike that will give me a little more ground  clearance. I currently have the stock 20/10/9 tires on the back and I want to stick 22/10/9 tires on it. I realize doing so will hurt the low end torque. Do any of you have any experience with changing sprocket sizes? I am willing to increase the tooth count on the sprockets to get the torque back close to normal. The problem is I am not sure how many teeth to add to the front or back. I also do not want to remove the case saver. Any educated recommendations out there?

    Thanks in advance!

Not sure if this is too late but you could look up the part number of your jet, then find a different atv that takes the same jet part number. After that, find the extended pilot jet for the other machine & use it on yours (since the part numbers would be the same).

Or you could modify the current jet with some epoxy glue and a little extender.

Thanks for the reply but I was able to get one of the flexible carb adjustment tools to work.

Motion pro makes a 90° tool for adjusting. But your 400x will need a D shaped adapter. Unless someone has already replaced it with a pre 05 mixture screw that will be just a flat tip head. You may also have to drill the plug out that they put in on 05 and newer carbs. Emissions crap. They do not make a finger adjustable one for a 400ex. I have a r&d flex screw on my fcr but the oem 400ex carb is not a racing carb and never will be. Anyone wanting to make power out of the 400ex motor will quickly ditch the stock carb for an fcr or even a 450r carb. These two carb can do things the oem carb couldnt even dream of. But that is why none of the aftermarket companys have picked up to need for one.

I figured there was a good reason why I could not find a finger adjustable screw... I had to clean the carb again and this time I removed the pilot screw so I could do a better job of cleaning. I cut a slot in the head of it so I could adjust with a flat head but that is difficult while it is on the machine. I may give the motion pro a try if the cheap one does not work. Thanks for the reply.

I've never used one of these adjustable Air/Fuel screws so I can't speak to them personally.

The 400x model is the same as 400ex but newer and with reverse. Off top of my head it was 05 and on that were 400x and everything before was ex

Edit: This is something like the tool that fish is speaking of. I used it on the scooters a bunch but on the 400 I just loosen the carb, adjust and put it back. Don't really adjust very often personally... set and forget.

Thanks, I will track one of these down.

40 or 42 will work for 100% stock 400ex's. With a 42 you will have to put your mixture screw in further is all. The 40 you will be close to stock setting on mixture screw. Also with the 40 you may still have to use your choke. The 42 makes the choke useless unless you have alot of mods. Internal and external.

Do I need to go up a size in the main also?

First thing you will want to check is if it is actually turning the crank and not just free spinning. This would indicate a slipping starter clutch. Which i have had them only slip when cold before. Best way to check is for pulse at the exhaust tip. You should feel air pulsing out it as it turns over. If you check that and its good i would next pull the carb and make sure it has a 42 pilot jet in it. Stock is 38 and will make them impossible to start when it gets cold out.(and choke make no difference). The 42 IMO should have been the jet they came with out of the box. But emissions regulations made them jet lean. If you have pulse and a 42 pilot jet i would next go through the whole carb and clean it up. Pull the mixture screw and clean the needle tip(count turns from where it is inward to light seat before removal so you can put it right back where it was). Spray carb cleaner through all passages and jets followed by compressed air. If none of this works you could have a stator issue or cdi box problem but those would be long shots.

It is starting to get cold here in missouri and my 400 is not starting as well when it is cold. Would you still recommend the 42 pilot if my quad is stock?

    This is great advice!

I would add that an in-line fuel filter would not be a bad addition. Need a high flow one though.

Do you run a filter? Im not sure there is enough room for one between the tank and carb.

Glad you got it figured out. Stick around.     If it were me.  I would likely dump the fuel tank. Have a look inside and clean out if nessecary.  To reintroduce crud right back into a just cleaned carb is a bummer.  I put a double shot glass of Sea Foam in every non-ethanol tank of fuel.

First thing I did was dump and clean the tank. Gas was pretty yellow... I will always run sea foam in my engine’s, I love the stuff. Thank you for the pointers for sure!

Welcome aboard! Bring on the sport quads guys!

I can send you a pdf of the manual or you can check out or manual section here on the forum. I am sure it is in there.

I found the pdf for the 05-09. I cleaned the carb this weekend and I think that is all the quad needed. Thanks for the reply!

  12. Hello all! I am from Missouri and I am on a mission. Just purchased a 2012 trx400 that has been sitting for a couple years. It does not run well and I am looking for a service manual for repairs. Figured I would start by reading up on the manual but I am sure I will have more questions along the way.
