  1. I do see the plastic tanks as an upgrade over OEM in cases where the tank or cap has pre existing issues. However, this tank and cap is as good as the one in my other bike and already has a working fuel sending unit. I was going to have to drill the hole out for that on the aftermarket one and try some untested units in it. I prefer OEM wherever possible. In this case it definitely was. Also, there's little chance my tanks will develop a problem. They are kept indoors and filled with ethenol free gas. Biggest threat to a metal tank is stored empty outdoors. These usually develop leaks around the foam rubber dampeners at the bottom of the tank brackets caused by moisture being trapped between them and the tank. If stored indoors that won't happen.
  2. I'll just put on the red one for now. I'll get a blue one eventually, either on a parts bike or ebay. Same as OEM side covers. I'll just roll with the Maier ones until on opportunity presents itself. Speaking of which, a guy just responded to my wanted add. Says he has two 350D's and wants 400 for both. Waiting on pictures..... I also just sold a front end hub to hub to someone for $175 shipped and got a guy coming by to pickup a rear end assembly for $250. The rear ends sell like hot cakes, so that's no surprise, but I almost never sell front ends. Too bad the package weighs about 90 Lbs and will probably cost me $65 just to ship it.
  3. He just didn't know any better. Guys part out a 30+ year old bike they obtained recently and assume that what's on it is original. I argued with someone recently who claimed Honda made the 86 TRX350A in blue because he happened to have one. Often times it's not what you don't know that will bite you. It's what you think you know that just ain't so.
  4. I'm getting pretty good at knowing the differences, buying/selling on eBay and facebook groups. I try to list what parts will work on multiple years and like to have my info correct. Some of what I know I learned the hard way. Like the time I assumed a front CV shaft, knuckle, and hub assembly off an 87 would work on some guys 86. I had to ship him the 86 he needed after learning my mistake. Had to eat a second shipping cost, and paying to have him return the 87 wasn't good business. I think I made $15 for them plus two trips to UPS after it was all said and done. Won't make that mistake again, I promise you.
  5. I have the blue insert that holds the fuse box. It's the upper part that attaches the lid I need. I actually out my red one on before I read your comment. With the seat on it barely shows. I still want a blue one
  6. Sorry If I came off as a jerk, Shade. I don't know much about anything, but I do know a bit about the 87 Honda TRX 350D.
  7. Yes. I actually have the correct lid for the upper toolbox. I have a red assembly with lid too, but I need a blue one
  8. lol. More evidence of the 4 wire ignition for the '87 350D. That guy Shadetree knows about these rigs.
  9. Well, she's done (mostly)! Swapped in the OEM gas tank from the bike I got Friday night and put the bumpers, racks and fenders on. I had to go with a front bumper off an 88 model for now. Still need a blue upper toolbox too. Wife and I went for a ride this afternoon. She prefers the gravel roads for now. Took her on some trails through the woods and around the lake, but she didn't much care for that. First time riding and all. As as said in another thread: I don't like the Maier side covers. The color mismatch brings too much attention to the aftermarket aspect of an otherwise honda original, IMO. I also want to get a color correct grey seat cover.
  10. I got them from SVS Powersports. If you're thinking of getting them in blue...don't. I'll sell you these that I have for much cheaper. https://www.svspowersports.com/products/maier-dark-blue-side-panels-for-1986-1989-honda-trx350-117786?variant=18279864074291&currency=USD&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google+shopping&utm_campaign=gs-2018-12-22&utm_source=google&utm_medium=smart_campaign I may leave them out in the sun for a few months and then slap some decals on them if I can't obtain OEM ones at a reasonable price or on a parts bike someday. I got a red kickstart cover on a bike I paid $250 for recently. A bike that I got running within 15 minutes of unloading it off the trailer.
  11. I thought you just built a 350d? I don't care what Partzilla says. I have two compete bikes, 3 additional wiring harnesses, and a manual that says otherwise.
  12. They work in a similar way as OEM, except instead of the part that sticks through the grommet, they use a stand off with bolt. I haven't bolted them on yet....they look stupid with faded fenders
  13. No. It's 4. Red, black, pink and Red/black. I should know. I've bought no less than six 87's over the last 2.5 years. The 86-87 TRX350A's have six.
  14. I'm into OEM too Shade, believe me. I had to brake down and get some Maier side panels for the blue 87 I'm finishing up. Not happy about it, adn I'll still continue to try and get OEM ones when I can, but sometimes I'll accept whats's available for these old rigs. OEM decals just aren't out there anymore, and I like my bikes to at least look as original as possible.
  15. Parts bikes...got to love them. After getting the ignition switch lined out and replacing the choke cable last night on this latest bike, I put in my test carb and tried to get her running. Would just barely try to pop off on carb spray. Hmmmm. Valve lash was jacked up, but adjustment made no difference. Found only 100 PSI with compression test. Pulled off the head cover to check timing and found this mess. I don't know what timing mark they were going by but it wasn't even close. In addition, nearly every head cover bolt was in the wrong hole. The two longest are broken and the decompression lever cable wasn't connected. Rocker faces are worn badly and the cam chain is way overdue for replacement. Fortunately, the camshaft seems serviceable. I have the parts needed but I'll have to put this on the back burner for now.
  16. Hey guys. I keep forgetting to mention that I've found a source for some pretty decent aftermarket decals for the red or blue 87 350D's. He may have other years too. They're not perfect, the front fender decal leaves out the orange color the OEM had, but I'm pretty happy with them overall. Didn't need to use them all, like the side covers, on my red bike. I'll be putting on the ones I got for a blue 87 tomorrow, and will use them all. I take some more pictures of it when I'm done. He gets $60 for them ($62 shipped). Let me know if you're interested in I'll put you in contact with him.
  17. So I picked up a decent looking blue 87 yesterday and am grabbing what I need off it. Looking it over, I almost hate to part it out. It has some issues, but nothing that can't be fixed. I got a guy who contacted me from Michigan who wants to come buy a good running bike, So I'll probably throw one together for him. This one is a good candidate. Anyhow, it came with an aftermarket ignition that wasn't working and I thought of Shadetree and this thread. I'm not about to spend any money if I don't have to and this ignition had two keys and looks like new. Took the round contact plate out and found one of the contacts had practically dissolved away. Found an old ignition switch I had for an 87 with no key and the wires cut. Put that contact plate in the aftermarket key set and soldered an OEM sub harness to it. Good as new, and only cost me some blood when I stabbed myself in the hand taking one of the ignition switches apart :)
  18. Picked up this yesterday to help finish up my wife's ride. Found the gas tank and cap in good condition, so I'll be swapping it out for the plastic aftermarket tank I have in there now. The rear fender is about the only other thing I needed. Didn't have the tool box or front bumper I needed, so I'll still be on the lookout for those. Should have this wrapped up tomorrow. Pics to follow.
  19. Just about ready for racks and fenders. Both front wheels are bent a little, so I'll want to test some others I have before I put the fenders on this weekend. Got the carb lined out and it's running like a champ. It may all be in my head but this one has a cylinder bored over to 82mm and it seems to have noticeably more power than my bike.
  20. Oh well. Missed out on that. There will be others soon enough. I'll just use my chopped up blue rear fender until the opportunity to improve it comes along
  21. !. I look daily and it's not coming up for me.
  22. Yeah, I figured while I had the bearings out I'd paint the knuckles. I think it was Jeep once mentioning removing the bearing seals and putting fresh grease in the OEM bearings. It worked like a charm, and the bearing seals pressed right back into place. Very happy with how they turned out.
  23. Just about got the 87 I'm building for my wife wrapped up. Spent most my day off today refurbishing the front knuckles and brake panels. Got new OEM shoes and lines bled about as good as they'll get. I'm looking for a better rear blue fender, but may have to go with what I got for now. The carb slide seems to be sticking, even after I cleaned the ! out of it. I'll be pulling it again to deal with before I put the airbox in. Hope to have the fenders on this weekend. Pics to follow. I'm rushing this one a bit lately because I really want to get to the 86 TRX350A, I have on deck.
  24. Tearing down one 87 to help complete the wife's tonight. Got the rebuilt rear end in today and took it out for a test drive. Thinking of putting on the blue fenders I have. I have both red side covers and no blue ones, but I'm thinking of saving the red ones to go on the 86 I'll start on next. Might try out the Maier side covers in blue. She wouldn't know OEM if it bit her.
  25. Lol. Like they're stopping him from continue listing the 350d's?!? What a tool.
