not sure if that will work on your bike.... with a 300 you reach down and flip that little lever up, on yours the kick starter cable linkage engages the decomp lever when you go to kick it over.

No the engine and my bike are both 350 350cc

Let me share a little secret with you , if your out in the woods with your 300 and the battery goes low and won't turn the engine over , some times instead of kicking it ,  you engage the decompression lever and hit the start button and if your bike starts easily ,  the little bit of battery voltage will turn the engine over it will fire right up , you only get a quick try at it , then have to engage the lever again

    Cool

there’s a cable-actuated and synchronized compression release on this engine

if cable not hooked up you might experience difficulties kicking it over

My other one you could legit push with your hand on the kick start . So there’s definitely a difference

lol, yeah..these models have a ton of compression, nothing like a trx300fw has.

Yeah it’s a big difference from the one on my bike

I couldn’t see your left side case very well but if yours is also an early 86 engine—then your starter should fit on this replacement.

also your blown up engine can be a parts donor. Keep all the parts it’s not junk.

like Shadetree said you can’t buy this stuff anymore

Yeah I was thinking it would be good for parts . And I decided to leave the engine detail to Rodney who’s working on the Honda . He’s going to check it out and what not

Thats super @Jaredmacneill, I also live in rural areas and can just head out on the dirt side roads with no problems.  Don't be shy coming back to chat, some are usually there most evenings....

I probably will join tomorrow. My life here is pretty dull. There’s only a handful I visited and ones never home , another is moving to another town , my uncle and wife are in their summer home and well the last one they are always screaming at each other and my folks are gone visiting family in Nova Scotia. Well dad’s here still but he’s busy farming and doesn’t like to take vacation. He’s normally to he has to take it and ends up working on the farm for his uncle because he can’t stay still

Jared, a little late but welcome, glad you found chat already, good job....

I like the chat . I left Facebook due to mental health issues so my social life is fairly well nonexistent 😂. And I get bored sitting at home waiting for the atv to be home , my parents live on a big farm so I have it out there and I can go for a 2-3 drive just on the service trails windmill paths . They also have a pilot program where you can use them on low traffic roads and that’s great because we’re 15-20 minutes from the nearest town . A two minute drive leads you to a good old dirt road then there’s about 30 minutes stretch that you are lucky to see a single car .

air filter sits on top, right above the rocker box. you will need all of those parts to make it run right. you can go to partzilla, look up  1986 HONDA TRX350 FOURTRAX, and it will break it all down on what parts you need. be warned !, parts for these are mostly discontinued from honda today !. the big problem you face ?, is honda no longer sells the c.d.i.'s for these models..not even after market ricks brand sells them. so, it will be nothing but used all the way, and you must have a 1986 c.d.i. !, later years will not work for this year.

Well mine all worked until it jumped it’s timing and bent the valves and threw the piston through the head cracking the head.

looking at this engine, it looks like an 1986, no later than 1987. these yrs had the crank case breather box ( black box ) attached to the crank case, just like it is in this pic.

Thanks . That actually scares me be my 86 is missing the air filter and I didn’t even knew one went there so driving it in the mud makes me think oh no

Welcome to the site Jared , the serial number off the engine will tell you what year it is

The engine serial number for that model in 1986 started with this number, TE07E-5000001.

The 1989 model year engine serial number started with this number,TE07E-8300001.

    Welcome aboard.

I know the 86's I've had have had an extra vent on the crankcase that was deleted on later models.

But I think that change actually occurred sometime in the 86-87 time frame, so if it's there, it's an early one.  If it's not, who knows.......

    Extra vent?

  13. Hey I’m Jared I am currently trying to get my 86 trx 350cc 4x4 rebuilt . I found a engine but the owner told me two different years first was 89 now he’s saying 86 . He owns a local shop and wants $400 cad for the engine but I’d like to know how to tell if it’s a 86 or 89 . Thanks in advance
