Good info here.  I thought pretty much all the backing plates had the same bolt pattern where they attach, but in this thread we learn the 300 is different.

If Fishfiles can't get you a good one, I can dig and see what I have in the stash.  We won't leave you hanging.

Here is a pic of the back side of the plates for reference.

The bottom one is the original 2000 TRX450S, there is also a slight difference in the clocking angle of the cable mount.

I am going to be sending you back the first one, perhaps you can help someone else out with it in the future.  I would be happy to cover the shipping of the second one, just not sure how to do that.

Post a few pics of your rear end.  The one without posts is, I believe, maybe a 300 backing plate.

Here are the pics for you.  I am afraid it looks like water has been inside the housing, look at the last picture and see the rust on the shaft inside.

  4. I just finished extracting a broken exhaust stud from the head on my 450 by welding a washer and nut to it. I got lucky and didn't have to drill it out.

Now that I am about to install the new OEM Honda studs I was wondering what does everyone else use for their exhaust studs, a thread locker, anti-seize or nothing?

Tomorrow I will dig thru backing plates >>>>  so in the pic  , you need  one to match the one in the middle ?

Yes sir, the one in the middle is the original.

  6. Well my rear brake backing plate problems persist.  I finally got around to trying to replace the backing plate today but when I disassembled everything, I found that mine is quite different that the replacement one.

On mine the brake shoes mount to two posts and the replacement backing plate does not have these posts, so the new brake shoes will not fit.  Thinking I might just be able to find different brake shoes and still make the replacement backing plate work I continued trying to mount it to the axle housing, but I found that the bolt pattern is quite different between the two backing plates.  I didn't waste time measuring the bearing sizes to see if they were the same.  So it looks like this backing plate is off of some other year or more likely size than the 450.

I am thinking I might just have to try and get the old backing plate welded up around the o-ring groove and see how well I can shape it with a dremel or a small cut-off wheel in a grinder.

Anyone else ever have to do this?  Any other ideas?

Yes. I have the ones that were taken off my 450s to do the  disk conversation.   Don’t really want to sell. But I’ll pass the wealth along and help the site at the same time. Going to a party this evening.  Can take a pic tomorrow of the backing plates and if you like it we can figure out the rest.

I just re-read your post and you said plates, plural, which makes me think you mean front, but I need the rear brake backing plate, just to be clear and not waste your time.

    Sounds great to me, Thanks

Would a $100 donation to the forum operation fund sound fair ------  that would be with shipping

Are you saying there is a backing plate available for a $100 donation? Yes I would be happy to donate.

  10. I have found a couple for 150 to 180 but still looking for something cheaper. I looked into the disc conversion but it said it requires 12” or larger wheels and mine are 11” so that makes it much more expensive

  11.

It is yellow.  The guy I bought it from said it needed a stator but I have tested that and there is nothing wrong with it or the rectifier.  I did get the service manual and the wiring diagram has been invaluable.  The alternator cover had been off and the pickup coil had been replaced but he put it back together with the neutral switch backwards so the starter solenoid would not engage but I fixed that already.  Then I found a broken timing chain adjuster and the timing had jumped, the cam was about a quarter turn off.  It still had 180 PSI compression but would spit fuel back out of the carb when trying to start.  I have the parts on order, going to replace the piston and rings because the piston is right at the minimum diameter allowed in the service manual. Luckily the cylinder looks good.  My next problem is the brakes, the front had no brake shoes in them and the back is corroded stuck and the o-ring grove is broken off in several places from someone prying to get the drum off.  I need to find a rear brake backing plate but no luck so far.

  12.

I have a 2000 Foreman TRX450S with what I think is a leaking LCD in the speedometer.  I have looked locally for a used speedometer but can't find one.  I pulled it apart and removed the polarizing films, can you confirm that it does indeed look to be missing the liquid crystal solution?  Second picture is after I replaced the polarizing films.

Does anyone know where I can get an LCD screen?
