Fishfiles 20,145 Posted March 21, 2023 Stevie Ray Vaughan 1962/63 Fender Stratocaster "Number One" This was Stevie’s main guitar. Number One originally had a white pickguard which was replaced with a black one that now adds the “SRV” logo, and a right-handed tremolo bar – now gold-plated left-handed. The guitar was built using a 1963 Stratocaster body and a 1962 neck, even though Stevie believed it was a 1959 Stratocaster. It is rumoured, although not proved, that he believed it was a 1959 model because he once took the pickups off and realized that they were made in 1959, so he made a conclusion from that. It was not until 1980 that Rene Martinez took the whole guitar apart and saw the year 1963 stamped in the body and 1962 on the neck. This Fender Stratocaster was used by Stevie Ray Vaughan for much of his career. Dubbed "Number One" and "First Wife" by Stevie, the guitar was used on all of Double Trouble's studio albums. The guitar was already a seasoned veteran by the time that Vaughan acquired it, as it had been previously owned by Christopher Cross (of yacht rock fame). Apparently, Cross traded the Number One to Hennig’s shop for a Les Paul because he wanted something with a thicker sound. Vaughan was already playing a loaner guitar from Heart of Texas at the time, but found himself partial to the Strat that Cross had dropped off, and traded it in for the guitar that he had currently been playing. Apparently, Hennig was more than happy to accept the trade as the loaner he had given Vaughan was in much better condition than the instrument that would become Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “First Wife”. Stevie Ray acquired the guitar from the owner of an Austin, Texas music shop in 1973. The guitar was "rebuilt more times than a custom Chevy," according to a 1983 Dallas Morning News article written about Stevie as he was breaking onto the national music scene. At the time of his death in 1990, Stevie was working with Fender Musical Instruments to create a reproduction "signature model" of Number One. The reproduction became commercially available in 1992. Number One is currently in the possession of Jimmie Vaughan.
