88 TRX 350D CDI

Recommended Posts

I have the above bike.  I'm trying to find a factory replacement C.D.I (30410-HA7-650), but it appears that they are no longer available.  Does anyone have experience with the aftermarket units that are supposed to be the replacement for part #30410-HA7-650?

I see one  on ebay that is made in Canada with 15 years experience.  I would probably trust them rather than some junk on Amazon.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the help.

Baking?, no.  It's VERY intermittent...drive a little and it cuts out, turn off the ignition and right back on and it runs fine

I’d try baking it.

preheat oven to 450, put module on a piece of foil plug facing up, bake for 7 mins.

sounds crazy but worked on a fan control module for me, and AKATV has done a bunch and claims about 90% success rate.

if you’re module is going out, what do you have to lose?

-What Jeep said above

Also, before I would do that I would suggest you eliminate you voltage regulator, coil and stator as the issue before you bake the CDI

If you lose spark and can bring it back by tapping on the CDI, its usually a sign that you have a cracked solder trace inside and its worth baking as per above method

O.K, but if nothing works, any idea where I can get a new CDI?

In regards to the regulator, coil and stator, would they come right back on with an on/off/on of the ignition switch?

I'll have to get back to you on that, I don't have it torn down at this time as it runs well almost all of the time.

What are the blue numbers on the neck of the plug?

AKATV sorry for the delay...the blue numbers are as follows HA7 CI545

The ATV finally died so it's apart.  I got a CDI box and when I tested for spark, I got an initial spark, then nothing as I cranked the machine over.  I'd wait a few minutes and tried it again with the same result. Thoughts?

Did you buy like a Chinese eBay low price CDI or did you get a new/used original OEM one?

I believe the 350 for that year and the Foreman 350D are completely different CDI’s are you sure yours is a 350D, I think some of them actually changed year to year as well

OK, just wanted to make sure
My gut feeling tells me it’s the CDI, but if it’s a reputable brand and you think it’s good then I would check the pulse generator. Those are known to go bad and if it’s not the pulse generator, you might have an issue with your stator / flywheel or wiring

Also, I believe 350D was a DC  CDI ignition, which was pretty specific to that model

The troubleshooting section is in chapter 17 of the Honda factory service manual, which is available in our free digital library

(I meant to post a link to the library, but it looks like I attached the manual)

I don't think I'd trust that aftermarket CDI. "Free 90 day returns" shows on that website, so I'd be trying an OEM and sending that one back if the OEM fixes your problem, which I suspect it will.

OEM is still available (maybe)

The 350's had 3 different CDI's that do not interchange.

87 350D Foreman

88-93 350D Foreman (88-89 in the US, and 88-93 in Canada)

Thanks for the links gents.  What about the coil?  And how can I definitely tell what vintage the CDI is?  I gave AKATV the numbers on the stock one, do they mean anything?

jeepwm69,    No not yet.  I did try to order a different CDI from Partzilla as you mentioned, but they are no longer available...as you suspected.  After I test the pulse generator, if it's good, I'll give that a try.

Try the baking.   At this point you have nothing to lose, and more often than not it will revive an OEM CDI that's gone south.
