I go back and re-read your initial post but then I assume you base camp somewhere and have extra fuel there.  Somehow I thought you were doing the entire trip from your atv.

FYI your trip sounds like a bunch of fun!

I have a hunting shack in the middle of nowhere that I started when I was 21. Have generator and wood stove. About 500 yards in from our trucks. A slice of heaven. Rode 55 miles today.

  2. Leaving shortly for 15 days at the hunting shack looking for ruffed grouse. As usual it rained most of the night to insure everything gets muddy hauling in. Our wheelers are our mode of transportation while we're there. Over 400 square miles to hunt.

I've been chewing back and forth on how to carry my rifle from cabin to tree stand.  It's not a difficult ride and I could always sling it cross body, but I'm going to hear how you feel yours travels and possibly pick one one.  I've been eyeing those.

I've been using one since the 80's and they are great.

  4. On my last trip to my hunting shack I blew a trailer bearing. I have a 6.5x12 foot aluminum Mission trailer with torsion axle that I bought new. This trailer is rated with a 3500# axle. While performing a field repair I noticed it had 1 1/16" bearings and found a sticker that this is a 2000# axle!! Needless to say I am upset and called the dealer. They are calling the dealer rep and I better get a new axle out of it. Never thought I would see something like this.

Now where's the fun in that?

You gotta have a 218 bee and a 257 Roberts around.  Just because.

    I have a .257 Roberts and it's a deer killer.😊

Gas or gasoline?  Use gas.  Cutting torch.  Anyone that cuts often gets a feel how far to open the valves to get close.  Open but don't light it and give them buggers a hole full.  Caution !  proper PPE required prior to ignition.  Ohio Blue Tip wooden matches can be tossed a good 15' without going out which puts you just outside of ground zero.

    KerPow!

    Straight gasoline - no flames.

I never wanted, nor cared about the cheap "russian" steel cased stuff. I realize the impact it can have on short term pricing/supply, etc.

I did clean my closet this weekend and was pleased to have found more 5.56 than I remembered. So I ping'ed my friend and told him to offer his 1,000rds to someone else who might be inn need.. Cause shy of a Red Dawn event, I'm in reasonable/responsible good shape on my inventory..and I'm gettin too dang old to hang with the Wolverines (grin).

This year saw the addition of another pistol, and more ammo for it. Optics as well.

then the nice surprise of the old school Colt AR15 match rifle.

so my fun money really is spent. AT this point, I prefer to have some cash on hand during a bad day as well as bullets...so the balance is struck and I've officially taken the temptation off my plate.

I won't put steel cases in my gun but Wolf ammo (Russian) actually has a line of brass cased .223. My son got some and we both tried it. I think it was called Wolf Gold. Was extremely accurate for both of us.

I'm not the best butcher but I do my own hogs, currently.  If all I'm doing is deboning and keeping just few specific parts, it's not as hard (obviously).  I have a table, my knife set, hose, etc.  I'll set up some music and the other fellas will probably sit around and critique my every move.  Good times!

Wonder- I always butcher my deer as soon as possible, especially if it's above 40F. The enzymes in venison age it over twice as fast as beef. I use an electric fillet knife to cut my steaks. Way easier and faster when the meat is less than firm. Other than inside the body cavity try not to get the meat wet. It's not like poultry. Use a damp sponge to get any hair off. After wrapping the meat we put the packages in garbage bags, put in bottom of cooler with ice packs on top. If at home they go in the freezer. When freezing, don't leave in a box all piled up. Spread the packages all over the shelves to freeze them faster. Meat that is too slowly frozen develops ice crystals in the meat which puts very small cuts in the meat. This results in bloody steaks when you thaw them. You will notice that fresh cut or flash frozen meat won't do that. My very best tasting venison is that which has been butchered and froze in 3 days or less.

first off...thank you for posting this pic.

my wife, being a sweetie, bought me one of these a couple years back. But  I wanted it out the way as much as possible so I mounted it more at a cant.

the result is it sticks way the heck up in the air and  looks kinda silly.  my old 300 doesn't have a super long rear rack, but this still might be the better way to go.. I'll have to try it.

I don't want to hurt her feelings cause she was good to get it for me...if I were on a weekend outing, yeah, that's the place for a long gun to live.

for just running around my property doing a security sweep, I tend to just toss a shotgun into a soft scabbard and sling it over my back.

two different scenarios I know, but yes, I want to show her that I like the Kolpin and use it more often.

I found years ago that mounting it that way is much faster to get at. It rides just inside the fenders so I won't smack it on a tree. I mount it mostly level so it doesn't stick up higher than anything else for the same reason. I've converted my son and several of my buddies to this method. I also have a shotshell holder mounted so I can grab shells fast as I dismount.

  10. I was with my buddy at his hunting land in Texas. Between his land and a nearby friends I mowed trails all over a combined 600 acres. It was in the 90's every day and 97 yesterday. Also put up feeders, cameras and checked deer stands. One afternoon it was 95 and the hitch broke on the mower. Lots of fun welding in those temps. Saw tons of deer, quite a few turkeys and some quall. To bad he had a Piglarus to pull the mower.💩

    I could use pics.

I keep telling myself "Don't go in the gumbo unless there's a tree close by" but I'm stupid and forget that I told myself that, so I get stuck in the middle of nothing and have to call someone to pull me out.

TWICE this has happened in the last week.  And that's with no rain for almost two months....... Raw talent to get stuck in the middle of a drought.

Should be able to post a picture Monday or so when I get back home. Anchor is very inexpensive too...under $20 I think. Have had to use it several times. When you are alone 20 miles in the bush from the hunting shack it's great to have. We don't have cell service in that area so you better be wearing good boots.
