At least there's 6" of snow so don't have to worry about fire danger, although it will be -11 tonight at midnight. 🥶

Have fun!! We have about 2' of snow on the ground. It's -17F and dropping, wind-chill right now is -39F. I think I'll stay inside.😬

  2. I got well in time to plow snow with the Rubicon. Back to back snowstorms, 20" total. 7 hours plowing. Then it went to -12 F last night. Didn't need to use bug spray 😁

  3. That's really sad to hear Freedom. I visited your neighborhood 6 or 7 years ago and thought it quite beautiful. I've heard about how this is really disrupting wildlife movement.

  4. Merry Christmas gang. My wife and I have been sick since last Sunday so had to call it off. Too bad since all our kids and 8 grandkids would have been here. The upside is we're not dead.

I don't think this lake is known for Lake Trout, but when I place my call to the outfitter I'll have more information.  I'll ask him the same things I'm asking here to get his input.

Find out if it's a clear or dark water lake. Dark lakes you can catch fish well all day. Clear ones are better in morning and evening for walleye. My biggest Pike up there was 43 1/2" long and about 25#. Biggest walleye was 30". Let the big ones go, eat the smaller ones. They cook and taste way better.

  6. I've been fishing Ontario, Canada for 45 years. Only live 120 miles south of the border in Minnesota. I have probably close to 400 days up there mainly chasing walleye and big northern pike. For walleye I use a spinning rod with quality 6# or 8# test mono with a jig. I tip the jig with a minnow, 1/2 a crawler or 3" Berkeley Gulp minnows. Gulp is great for fly-in fishing. For northern I use a casting rod and reel with 12# test Fireline. The spinning rod setup I tie the jig directly to the line. On the casting setup I use a good quality ball bearing snap swivel. Best baits for big pike are a large nickel Doctor Spoon and large crankbaits cast or trolled at 3mph or more. I find leaders hamper bait action but if heavily infested with Pike you may need them. If you get into Lake Trout fishing I've done plenty of that too. Just holler.

i never hung a deer, so the enzymes will work, with purpose. i was a little bit slow butchering some, at the meat hung in the basement a bit longer then i wanted. i read deer meat didnt need to hang, to be tender. got to look up that article again.  the frozen meat always bleeds when i thaw it out. the hardest on meat is to have a freezer, that constantly defrost. warms the outside of the meat, then refreezes. the freezer in the basement, dont work like that. has 1.5 inch of ice at the top, and the bottom, the widest part of the ice the ice is least 6 inches wide, and its at the top an bottom. i triple wrap also. plastic paper and then, more plastic. i've even used newspaper,[hoover blanket]. got a few other tricks also.a bag of stripper froze in ice, just looks yellow from the picture the old camera took. fish is over a year old without freezer burn.

    A couple of points here-

Freezer burn is caused by improper packaging. Meat needs to be in airtight freezer bags or freezer paper with no air in it. Regular plastic bags are actually porous to air. If your package is proper it doesn't matter if your freezer has defrost or not.

Defrost cycle does not heat up or thaw the meat. It only clears the ice off the coils and then shuts off, restarting the cooling process. If you let the ice build up like that it is inefficient for the cooling process, compressor runs more and harder, and will cause it to fail sooner.

The enzymes in venison break down the meat way faster than beef. My best venison is butchered in a day or two.

Bloody meat is caused by freezing it too slow. This causes miniscule ice particles in the meat which cuts it and allows the juices flow out. That's why you don't see this on store bought meat. If it's been frozen it's been flash frozen. Putting all the meat in the freezer in a heap will cause this. When freezing your venison spread the packages all over the coils to freeze it faster.

  9. We've had frost the last couple nights at the hunting shack. Snowed off and on today. Deer season starts next Saturday. I'm going back there Thursday for 10 more days.
