Sam, as you may remember.....me and the wife love Colorado. We try to ride off road there every year or two if possible. I rode there twice in two weeks two years ago! We also ride Mena Arkansas and Red river motorcycle park in Bulcher Texas. I've been to Cloud Croft New Mexico a few times to ride off road there.....first time was the infamous 911......wow, that was an experience. I love to hike and explore but my knees are shot, We hiked the Grand Canyon down to "Plateau Point" and back up in about five hours back in 1984......thirteen miles! I want to drive around and do something similar to what riverc did but that's in my future. My dream vacation would to load the wheelers and my YZ 250 in a small "Toy Box" trailer and travel without any hurry or specific agenda. Perhaps take several years doing it too! By the way Sam.......are you and the wife and Baby X still planning on a trip to the States when " the money's right?" If so just let us know. I'm sure several us us can help/accommodate.

I have a friend who heads to Colorado several times a year, he loves it..!!

We do plan on a USA adventure at some point but obviously money is the biggest factor... To make the trip worth while we'd need at least a month plus the funds.. With a little one nearly with us it's safe to assume that this trip is on hold for the foreseeable.

My ideal trip would be to work whilst in the USA, but from what I've learnt that can prove to be difficult. It seems easier in Australia or New Zealand...

I've had several offers now for assistance with accommodation etc, I REALLY DO appreciate that as well folks, it means a lot.

I'd love to get the opportunity to meet you all I really would, it will happen one day, I'll make sure of it 🙂

  2. Sports ATV'S is not something I've ever been into, currently considering it though.

The gearing means nothing to me if I'm honest however, I did have a ride on a Polaris 525cc several years back that was geared for a big guy (22 stone!), It accelerated that fast I couldn't focus, my eyes were like the ball in a pinball machine haha!!

  3. Interesting build, I look forward to seeing the end result for sure 🙂

From the above Im thinking you'll be gaining more power, torque especially at a much lower rev range. I could be wrong, I'm no race engine builder by any means lol!

What carb will you have to use for this build, will the stock carb with oversized jets be big enough?

  4. Thanks for the replies folks.. To be honest I listed it here because I know it's not a factory fitted item over your side of the water whereas here they all came stock with a speedometer.

I'd like it to be used for sure not just flipped but if there's any interest from regulars here we can work something out for sure.

@Wheeler If you want it for your 300 build you can have it if you pay shipping.

I'll take some photos tomorrow for you all and post them up 🙂

Believe it or not my vacations are just going camping/riding with family and friends for a week. The kids talk about it all year long and can't wait to go. I love it because there's no cell service and its not the typical go, go, go kind of thing. I actually get a chance to sit back and relax.

I'm also a fan of camping, as you say, there's no cell service, your away from reality and life as we know it 🙂

  6. Or holidays as we call them in the UK..!!

What do you have planned for your next, where is it and why?!

This may seem an intrusive thread but i get intrigued. I tend to choose places I've never been to, just to see what it's like!

Those worthy of mentioning would be Africa, to climb Kilimanjaro. England, UK (Cumbria), to climb Scaffel Pike. Wales, UK, to climb Mount Snowdon.

  7. I found the big horns to be a very hard compound rubber. Don't seem to mould around the terrain bit sit on top and skip, hop & bounce, especially on loose, dry, gravel type terrain.

I did however find them very puncture resistant.

That being said.. Mega Mayhem's are very similar on dry, loose terrain. Rubber compound is to hard, they don't mould over the terrain at all.

They also suffer badly from cuts to the leading edge of the lugs on hard, dry surfaces.

How do outlaws fair on hard, loose ground guys? Do they get cut lugs also?

It seems to me that the better way is to get away from the system of using clutches entirely, like with the torq locker. The DGL would allow one wheel to spin at a different rate than the other but it would never allow it to become unlocked. You're not going to be able to pull that off by changing out clutch disks in the factory assembly. I've tightened them up with shims but it's not much better, IMO the only way to go with that is to leave it alone or lock it solid. Or replace the internals with a DGL or now Torq locker.

    I agree Mac however...

Modern friction materials, oils and friction modifiers can be used together to achieve great results.

I haven't tried them myself but I have seen results in similar applications that have worked extremely well.

It's a shame nobody has come up with a torque biasing locker as yet, the same as Quaife offer for trucks etc.

Would be the perfect solution for ATV's IMO, easy to steer, locks on demand, and not only transfers power to the wheel not spinning but manages the power between the wheels.

Could cost high dollar though, infact I imagine it would cost high dollar! Lol

I was off Thursday and Friday, but took a vacation day Wed and part of the day Tuesday, so I've was out of work most of the week.

Spent that time just north of Atlanta is the suburbs.   Huge number of pretentious, arrogant jerks.  I despise going but we go there for Thanksgiving so they come to us for Christmas.

Interstate in Birmingham was closed due to construction so the trip went from 7ish hours to over 9.

Let's just say I'm glad the week is over.  LOL

Sam, around here Turkey, Ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, and as mentioned, lots of pie.  Eat till you're miserable.

Our second biggest city is Birmingham also, guess what....?! It also is constantly riddled with traffic due to construction!!

The foods you mention pretty much sum up what we eat here I've tour Christmas holidays lol..

    SamUK ,

I like pastry crusted things also ------- I bet you'll have something similar  over there , we have meat and crayfish pies , stuffing in side either a mini pie shell or like a soft taco shell to make a pocket , then  pinched on the ends to hold it together ,  then deep fried in oil , the crayfish folded pie is my favorite , I wish I wouldn't have thought of that , now I want one

another pastry dessert I like ,  lady at the flea market makes these mini pecan pies , they are crunchy , I break them up into pieces and microwave them for about 20 seconds , 2 scoops Blue Bell Homemade vanilla ice cream , big squirt of Hersey's chocolate syrup , and aerosol whip cream sprayed over the top

Yes, we call those pastries with crimped ends, pasties, or a pasty (singular). Pretty much any filling goes however common fillings are, chicken tikka, ham and cheese, cheese and onion, and not to mention a traditional Cornish pasty!

It seems crawfish is a popular delicacy in Louisiana.. The closest we have is Crayfish (similar but smaller I believe), maybe one day I'll get to sample some LA dishes 🙂

  11. So... A few questions...

Are you guys able to source friction material used for clutches & brake pads etc etc?

You know there are many different options available, yes?

I've never looked into modifying a front diff other than adding shims but after a little research it seems OEM could be made better by upgrading the friction materials on the clutches.

Just thought it was worth a mention 🙂

To me, if these new units perform they would be worth more (again, to me).

Replacement parts will be available for the new units.

If you have a DGL and the clutches wear out you’re SOL

Clutches can be refurbished, new friction material can be bonded to the steel backing plates easily enough.

It's certainly something I'm confident in doing if anybody here needs assistance or a refurb.

Windy here all day, right around freezing. Rain, freezing rain, wet snow. Never made anything but a miserable old day none the less. More wind tomorrow.

Yeah those dull days suck don't they, I'm not a depressive kind of guy but that weather does seem to take a hit on some folks for sure.

I quite like the Autumn/winter months, or at least I do here in England lol

  15. As a stock replacement I would always buy bearclaws. For general and intended ATV use they do the job perfectly.

For mud.... The options are endless aren't they really. I had mega mayhem's which were fantastic and didn't really float to bad. I think if I ever build another mud bike I'll just fit BKT Agri tyres. They work best on trucks and it seems that way on ATV'S too. The price is also far cheaper! 🙂

Id have to mention mud lites too, they work well in most conditions you'd usually encounter in general ATV use, plus some.

  16. Mac mean make the A frame or draw bar removable. Remember, to be legal for UK/Ireland it will need to be sleeved at least 6" and cross bolted through the box section. One bolt horizontally, one bolt vertically. From memory it would require a minimum of 50x50x3mm box section sleeved with 40x40x3mm box section and bolt diameter of 12mm/ 1/2 inch. Over engineer it and you won't go far wrong with the law 🙂
