Winchester Alaskan 375H&H, another mod 70, Featherweight 30-06. Marlin 1895 Trapper 45/70, SKS, two Remington 12 gauge shotguns, 870 wingmaster & 1100. A couple 22 rifles-nylon 66, Rossi, some pistols, 44mag Ruger Alaskan, 1911 in 45, kel-tec 22mag. And of course...a couple of pellet guns to keep the squirrel population down.

If I’ve got a rusty mess to work on, I’ll mix up either H5606 (aviation hydraulic fluid) or ATF 50/50 with acetone. I’ll put it in a pressurized spray can and go at it. Smaller jobs are either Kroil or ACF-50/ corrosion X...those last two are identical except one has the mil-spec #.

You can buy the Shell Rotella T6 for $20 - 22 a gallon. Home Depot or Walmart is the cheapest up here. That is cheaper by the quart than the Honda Oil at the dealer, for a full synthetic... probably 1/2 the price of Mobil or Amsoil synthetic...

The Shell Rotella T6 5W40 full synthetic. The T6 is JASO MA rated for wet clutch usage. They also have a colder and warmer weight version to fit your climate. I use the 5W40 year round in Interior Alaska. We go from -40F to +80F up here... I use this oil in all three Honda ATVs. My 08 Honda Rancher has been using it the longest.

I put two 100W silicon heat pads on the case where the oil sump is. These pads are fairly common up here. The use of two pads warms the whole engine up. I’m running Shell Rotella 5W40 synthetic oil. Never had any problems starting. Napa carries silicon heat pads, Alaskan and Canadian companies make heat pads, Kats or Yukon are a couple brands of pads. 

I think the newer Rubicon wheels would work also. People are always selling brand new stock tires and wheels. Just got to put that after market $1200 worth of tires and wheels on...

I’ve put 13 hours on the Honda snowblower and 20 hours so far on the Honda Foreman plowing. Main problem this winter was it being too cold to move snow! I have silicon heat pads on both of the above to warm the oil...was a tough winter this year.

Will be plowing today when the sun comes up. Snowing now, but getting warm (Near freezing) for the first time this year. Four feet of snow on the ground, no melting yet this winter. Spring might actually show up in March this year...

Stayed above zero at the house (+1F). Which is better than the -20F down in Fairbanks at the moment! Been a long cold winter in these parts. Fair amount of snow, almost ten hours on the Honda snowblower since Dec., probably about the same on the Foreman with the plow. Still six to seven weeks of possible snow weather, before the sun stays out for too long to be cold anymore.

You can use a heat gun to mold the plastic trim around the winch or whatever, adds a little protection, instead of cutting it off.

I always run a roller fairlead, as others have said the hawse just generates too much heat. For my plow I always switch out my synthetic and use and old 2" flat tie down strap. The thing has lasted years with no signs of wear. It's just long enough to raise and lower the plow so doesn't bind up on the drum at all.

 

And I've gone through 3 warn atv winches over the years. All on one machine. Have 4 years on my newest winch and it's a Superwinch, I couldn't be happier

How do you attach your tie-down strap to the winch spool? 

Welcome, what model of Rancher do you own? My 08 manual-shift-Rancher is my favorite ‘tight quarters’ machine. We have a trail network down in the Alaska Range that you access from a railroad bridge. The Rancher fits through the walkway, which is the only way across, opens up to a 100 miles of interesting trails with gold panning and fishing spots.

It only last for three months or so.😎

Been snowing up in the hills at -14F, -31F down in town!!! I’ve got to go in to work, will probably just leave the truck running at those temps.

Remington is definitely worse post-Dupont days.  They still go bang, most of the time, but the materials, fit, and finish have gone way down.  Same with the Remlins.

 

I've seen some that looked ok with a cursory glance, but I've also seen a lot that should never have left the factory, and wouldn't have before the Cerberus acquisitions.

The newer Rem versions of Marlins are looking and working fine. I don’t remember the dates now that Remington took over? But the ones from the last few years have been top notch. It was the first 6 months that Rem took over Marlin, where they had QC problems. The Marlin I have now, which is a 2018 model (I think), works better/smoother than the Marlin I bought 20 years ago!

blue/nice wood ‘Alaskan’ maybe 5 years old? Fabrique National... The Alaskan had the longer barrel as opposed to the ‘Safari’ and the forward sling attach is on the stock not the barrel. You probably know that already...

A couple of bear guns usually ride along, although not at the same time. A Ruger Alaskan 44 mag. A Marlin 45-70 Trapper. A couple of rifles for hunting both Winchester Mod 70s one in 375 H&H, one in 30-06. A couple of auto-pistolas 1911 45 and a 22 Mag. One 1100 Rem Mag 12 gauge. These are the ones I can talk about...

Staying steady at -21F here. The sun came and went and didn’t budge the temp up at all, all 3hrs 44min of it! 2 more minutes than yesterday though. Big storms down South of the Alaska Range have shut down one of our N - S highways with avalanche and whiteouts. That warm air coming from the South, is keeping us from being -40F. 

I see the term used lately to describe college aged kids, who are feeling threatened by free speech! Someone is talking about a subject that they don’t want to hear about. They then need a ‘Safe Place’ to go and recover, where no one is using free speech and talking about subjects that upset them. They are called ‘Snowflakes’ because they melt at the first hint of a confrontation. Mommy and Daddy would never let anybody talk about subjects that upset them before and now they should stop... (stomping their feet, throwing a temper-tantrum)...

I’m pretty used to it now, grew up in the Selkirk Country, 40 winters now in Alaska, 6 of those winters in the Arctic. I still have all my fingers and toes!

-13F here, that’s -25C in Canadian degrees. Was up to 0F yesterday, they say the bottom may drop out later this week! I should make another heating oil run when the bulk plant opens again...re-jetting, putting an hour/tach meter & heat pad under the engine case on the just broke-in, Honda snowblower in the shop today. Skiing or fat tire biking to build up an appetite this afternoon...
