Hi welcome to ATVHonda forums.  I don’t know why third gear. But many ES that ride with us malfunction in 3rd for some reason.  First thought.Rock the Atv back and forth while trying to shift.   You need a good hot battery.  2nd thought do Retro’s ES maintainance thread.  A common problem is the bolt connecting the shift shaft to the shift level shears off or comes loose. We have members much more knowledgeable with the ES models

Welcome aboard.

You say Auto shifting is perfect, so I'm guessing you have a Rubicon?

And it won't shift into 3rd gear when trying to use ES mode?

If it's an auto it's a Rubicon.

The machine doesn't actually have gears, it has a hydrostat in it, and when in ES mode it simply locks the swash plate into a certain spot.  If it works fine in auto mode that tells me it's not a mechanical problem, but an electrical/ECU problem.

When you put it in ES mode, it will show/shift 1st and 2nd gear on the meter, then not shift to 3rd, or ?

Do you have a good strong battery on the machine? The Rubicons have a lot of electronics on them, and if you have a weak/iffy battery, it can cause the electronics to go crazy.
