2021 Honda Rubicon Not Shifting

Recommended Posts

I have a 2020 Honda Rubicon with Electric shift and it will only shift into 1st and 3rd gear. I rebuilt the motor a few months ago and had this problem so I completely disassembled the motor again to make sure I had all the gears/washers ect. were all in the correct order. Me and my buddy double checked everything and it looks correct but I am still have the same problem. Does anybody have an idea of what could be causing this? Thank you in advance.

Welcome aboard.  Does it shift properly with the emergency shifter?  You say 1st and 3rd, does it skip 2nd or ?

I tried it with the emergency shifter and it does the same. 1st gear is good, I try to shift it to 2nd (no change). When I shift it electronically it displays 2nd but wont shift then I shift to 3rd and it will shift really hard. Then no 4th or 5th.

Ok, that actually makes sense.  You have two clutches in that machine (DCT, Dual Clutch Transmission).

One is for 1,3,5, and the other is for reverse, 2, 4

So, given that you started having this problem when you disassembled and reassembled the engine, I would guess you didn't get something back together right on the 2nd clutch.

That said, first I'd do some testing and make sure that the solenoid on the front of the engine is working properly.  The DCT's run off of oil pressure to engage the clutches.

Go to the toolbar at the top of the page, click on the "service manuals" button, and download the factory service manual for your machine.  We don't have one for a DCT Rubicon, but for your engine troubleshooting the one for the 2014-2019 420 DCT should work fine.

Look in section 13, which will show you how the system operates, and then you'll have to try to figure out what exactly isn't like it should be.

The DCT's are complicated, and a PITA to work on, which is why I got rid of the wife's DCT Rancher when she decided she liked my 05 Rubicon better.

I bought the service manual before I pulled the motor out, but during the re-assembly process I broke the electrical connector off the solenoid assembly B and the solenoid assembly linear so I bought a new ones and installed them. Is there any adjustments that need to be made to the solenoid assembly linear (Picture)?  I also removed the valve body and cleaned it out. Could the clutches be sticking and need to be replacd?

No adjustments that I'm aware of.   @toodeep you have any ideas on this one?

Could it have low oil pressure? How do I check it?

Go to the toolbar at the top of the page, click on 'service manuals"

Download the 2014-2019 TRX420 FA1 FA2 FA5 FA6 TM1 TE1 FM1 FM2 FE1 Service Manual

Go to page 13-20

You'll need something like this.  You can make your own or buy one.

Sounds almost like its either the electric engagement of the 2-4 shifter or maybe something mechanically wrong with the actual shifter.

@ATC4ever I replaced the shift motor recently, but just to check my wife has the same bike so I took her shift motor off her bike and tried it on mine and it does the same thing.

@TBRider I have replaced everything with Honda parts.
