I screwed up when I bought the Deere 2640 without a front end loader, thinking I could add one later.

The tractor was $5K back about 15 years ago.   The same tractor with a FEL was about $7500 at the time.  The FEL by itself is about $3-4K for a worn out one, or $7-8K for a new one.

Live and learn.  Get the implements WITH THE TRACTOR.  Much cheaper to do it that way.

you deff are 100% correct !. when i purchased my b2100 used, it did not have a loader on it ?, did not think much about it back then, fast forward a yr or two ?, yes.i need a loader !. just turned 60, and my back ain't what it used to be. sooo..off to the searching i go, took me about 1-2 months to locate this tractor with the loader. i hated buying another tractor ?!, but the only way to get this LA301 was to buy a tractor with it already on it. no one leaves a loader laying out in the field, not unless the tractor is DOA ?, then its a whole diff story. the story on the b1700, the PO claimed it had low compression on #2 cylinder, and has a ton of blowby ?, well, after some sneaky stuff with the buyer, nothing illegal mind you !..lol. lets just say..he was a pain in the backside ?!...lol. got it home, removed the valve cover, low and behold, very first thing that stuck out like a turd in a punch bowl..was the front rockers were all the way off the front push rods !!!..yep...that will cause low compression alright !. put it all back together, adjusted the rockers, cover back on..it fired right up !. still has blowby ?, but not nearly as much as it had ?. i'm hoping the rings in that front cylinder will loosen up as i run it ?, not good to run a 3 cylinder diesel with a dead cylinder !!!..lol. as for the loader ?, i'm cleaning the brackets all up, painting them, working on the front bumper, and side supports right now.

No i was asking jeep… we have both the 146 and 148 John Deere loaders…. Both will work for his 2640…but the 146 is the one thats recommended for that size tractor…. IF? he only has one set of hydro outlets he would be better off going with the joystick controller… as a matter of fact even he has duel outlets (2 pair) if it were me… I’d still go with the joystick controller but they can be troublesome…. This setup is what he would be looking at…. Tool box doesnt come with it, and thats not a good place to mount it.. no matter if you pick. The 146 or 148 … your view is going to change… and! MAKE SURE YOU GET THAT JACK STANDS…. You do NOT wont ether of those loaders living on that tractor…those models are known for have front end troubles…that block on the front where the axle pivot is ? All cast and all one piece…. And very expensive…. We had to replace from breaks …. And no matter how well you keep those loaders greased they are still going to act like a jackhammer on the front end going over rough ground….. they are not hard to take loose…you’ve run a skid steer …. You know….the deal..lol!

wander how long it will take for this to post lol!

I think we might instead try to find a 4wd tractor with a FEL.  From what I could find, 2wd’s don’t hold a candle to a 4wd when it comes to FEL tractors.
i just need to find a good, older (simple) 4wd tractor with a FEL at a good price.  That’s not asking much these days is it?  Lol

its not the 4wd part you need ? ( does help though ! ) its a tractor with power steering !. good luck finding a cheap tractor..lol. fakebook has tons of tractors, there was one up in sprindale area for around 10k ?, he even was willing to take some trades, but no atvs.

Posted (edited)

One reason 4wd has become more of a standard these days is because the length of some 2wd models have been shortened over time……one wouldn’t think there was that much deference between these two…but that added length of the green machine …. Makes all the deference in the world…. Jeep if your updating to newer (to possibly a shorter body) … then Yes! Go 4wd….. better to have it then not…. Scale size is deferent  but the over all result is the same….

Edit: some axles can be widened… another plus with a loader….most front axles on none articulating 4wd are very limited to widening …. Most times limited to adjustment simple as flipping the front wheels.

finally got all my hydro lines hooked back up, ran into a snag on the connectors ?, another trip to the kubota dealership, spent some more money..sigh. after getting all those swapped around, found out my bucket was not working right ?, after doing some researching, i had the two lines coming off the feed line backwards ?, swapped those around last night, it was too late to crank the tractor up here ( 10 pm ), waited until today to test it out, everything works correctly now !. my starter helper switches showed up today, installed them on my b2100, and the other on the b1700, now both of them crank very easy now. here is a pic of the starter relay switches, they seem to be working right..now both tractors crank right up.
