DLBeltran74 47 Posted October 24, 2022 Ok folks, I recently came across this Yamaha through a friend. H gave it to me so I couldn’t say no. Well it has been sitting for four years and was told it ran and drove the last it was parked. Well, I did the minor stuff on it. The original mikuni carb was shot but I couldn’t find a model number to order a rebuild kit so I put w cheap eBay carb on it just to get it going again. Low and behold! This sucker started on the third pull. My question is, if I do not have a choke cable in the carb will it suck in more air and cause the bike to idle real high? I adjusted the idle screw and it idles real high and higher. That’s about all it will do. Any info will help. TIA!

DLBeltran74 47 Posted October 24, 2022 Yeah, I’ve seen all this. I was just wondering if not having a choke cable installed would air be sucked in and make the bike idle high.
DLBeltran74 47 Posted October 24, 2022 These are the only numbers I could find on the carb. Not sure what the model is. There are aftermarket carb kits for these carbs but I just need to figure out the model number to get the right one.
Fishfiles 19,667 Posted October 24, 2022 What the mudder do is remove the choke/ enrichment plunger , discord it and seal the hole with silicone , when you have a snorkel you don't need a choke enrichment plunger , you just put your hand over the snorkel and it is a choke , I bought a 300 like that and ran it like that for a long tome till I got the correct headlight switch and cable to fix it right , getting the silicone out the carb was not easy ---- so to answer your question " do you need the choke installed to not suck air " , I would guess so for sure , but have only ran them with the choke hole plugged up , I know dirt and water would go right in the cable with out it being plugged up --------------- call this number 601 798 8493 , that is Honda , Yamaha etc in Picayune , Mississippi Steve in parts is very good , he can figure it out for you , if anyone can

DLBeltran74 47 Posted October 26, 2022 How about this? Does any choke cable work? What makes them so different? I’ve looked and looked and a lot of what I found appears to have the same end that connects to the carb as the OEM cable. I am cheap. I do not want to spend $75+ dollars for a choke cable. I’m more lake a $7.99 type of guy. If it work, let it ride! What I am asking is if the plunger end is small on the OEM should another cable with the small end work? I am not a mechanic at all and still trying to learn all this stuff! Any info will help! Thank you!

Technically what you have is not a choke for say , it is a fuel enrichment valve , getting the cable to work right using something that was not made for the application might be tough -------- would guess you would be the pioneer of the field , if you take the challenge

Thank you! i'll say this..and leave it at that. some things on atcs..atv's..you can make it work..and some things you MUST put the correct part on them ?..and this is not one of those parts you cheap out on !. ever hear of the saying.. '' you get what ya pay for '' ?..well..this is one of them !...lol.
Goober 1,555 Posted October 26, 2022 ATVs are not cheap—they’re performance machines. You got this for free? And you don’t want to buy the OEM part? I say don’t be that guy—fix it correctly. That’s where the value, performance and reliability of the ATV will be—plus the pride and knowledge that you challenged yourself to become a better mechanic
Goober 1,555 Posted October 26, 2022 How the choke operates is a good question. Typically chokes are used to temporarily enrich the fuel mixture and are not needed after the engine reaches operating temp. some chokes dampen the volume of air the carb will get upon startup. other chokes use an enrichment passage thru the carb body to draw additional fuel into the carb. Adjusting the pilot screw has a similar enrichment effect but like you used it for diagnostics purposes—you can get it started that way but then it won’t run right afterwards. i like how you’re being patient doing your homework and sticking with this project
DLBeltran74 47 Posted October 29, 2022 Well, I spoke to someone that deals with mikuni on a personal level. He advised me that the carb rebuild kit for my OEM carb has not been released yet but will be soon. He said he will stay in touch with me and let me know as soon as it is released. It’s not very expensive and I have a chance to save the OEM carb. That was pretty exciting!
