I do suppose that if I did need the winch, say last summer, I would have liked to have it.

But I wonder how long I would have waited until someone else came along ... with a winch.

My experience as a kid was that rope is not very strong but cable was.  So any pulling out of a ditch that we did, we wanted cable, not rope.

But I know today they have much stronger rope.  And new rope is always stronger than old rope.

I ordered 4 tow straps or tree savers and they are all fabric.  But again the stronger fabric of today.

This atv is for recreation for me.  It will probably never see a day of work.  So if there is an issue, I'm just along for the ride, one way or another.  Some people say the adventure begins when something goes wrong.

    dc

like you, I was totally against this thing they called rope on winches ?, but after seeing it, reading up on it, reading all the reviews ?, I made the call, sure enough, this rope they use is not only strong ?, but claim to be stronger than cable ?!, well, I have deff put it to use for sure, so far, it has not let me down. I would also invest in a snatch block !!!, it will double the pulling power of your winch.

  2. @everyone, thank you very much for your comments !. I do love wrenching, its in my blood. but as a few here have said, it takes a ton of time to do what I do, and maybe this is why I feel like I do at times ?, I just need to slow down, breath, exhale , and take it slower I guess ?. I did get my cabin fixed up this past summer, I am looking very forward to spending time out on the lake next spring/summer enjoying my jet ski that only has about 12 hrs on it ?!!, its time to chill for a bit ! :-).

Hey shade, you have had a nice change this fall working on your cabin.  I know it's hard work but something different for a change.  Sounds like you have more to do so next spring take some time away from wrenching and finish the cabin.  You can keep wrenching to keep you going but maybe not take on the full rebuilds like you have been doing.  I'm sure there are many smaller fixes you can do such as brakes, carbs, or top ends.  Just slow down on the full jobs from the ground up.  I think you have enough of a rep in your area to pick and chose the smaller easier fixes.  I can't believe you want to completely dump working on these but I could be wrong.  You've just been burning yourself out on these long hard rebuilds.....my 2 cents worth...

yeah..your right, I spend so much time into doing complete rebuilds, it eats away most of my time, sooo..your right on this !.

Well ok.....You could start a eBay business stripping old bikes and selling parts.Try and find a part time job someplace where you are not on your feet all the time.

I have thought of this a few times, even my bud who has a very large bone yard of atvs, atcs, tried to get me to start doing this ^^, might give it some more thought !.

I hear you Jeep , I could start an atv repair business, so many people ask me to work on their stuff , I won't do  it , I don't care what they are willing to pay , or  care how easy or quick a job it is , every now and then I will let a friend come over and let him do the work and help him along , but even that is rare as it always turns into I would wind up doing most of the work  -----------  I stick to what I do as far as work goes , my Grandfather always told me , " do what you do well and stick to it " ------- but really I always have something to work on of my own and don't have time for others' projects , cause once you start doing it , everyone will be looking for the same deal , if I were to charge someone to work on their atv , it would be $100 per hour ,  same rate I get for working on heavy equipment , atvs are harder if you ask me  , Caterpillar Machinery around here charges $190 -$225 per hour for road service depending how far you are from their shop  , with travel time to and from their shop ----the atv dealers are right at $100 per hour

my local dealership charges anywhere from 60-90 an hour here. I charge by the job, mainly because I love doing it !, but as my other thread spoke of this, its starting to wear on me...lol.

  6. gonna go with same as jeep^^, if it wont '' hit '' off a short burst of starting fluid ?, then this is a electrical issue, or compression issue ? ( out of time , or worn cylinder, rings , or like goober said, bent , stuck valve ? ), any of these will give you what your dealing with.

oh yea , the date  was way back -------  I think that is what student saw , the last post was fresh , the post before that last one was Helmut

yeah, I have not seen helmut around for a very long time !. I dont know what happened to him ???, he just vanished. not even sure if he's still alive or what ??.

When reading a thread , you need to look at the date of the original first post and the posts right before the ending post , sometimes people will respond to a thread   that was 8 years old and expect a reply  , I seen a Helmut post also the other day

by helmut ?, what was the post date ?, I bet it was a few years back ?!..lol.

I am 61 and have no plans to retire , I think the saying " rolling stone gathers no moss " is true , stay going as long as you can ,  that not only includes physical work but mental challenges ----- seen both my Grandfathers retire and with in a year both were gone , sitting on the sofa and watching tv will kill you faster than a hard days work , especially if the work is something you enjoy

well...this is all I do..or shall I say...able too do ?. my motorcycle wreck in  '08 left me with no choice but to be home now, but to keep from going insane ?, I do this. I am by no means sitting on the couch all day !..lol. that would deff make me head for the nut house !!!..lol.

  10. Hey outlaws, I have been thinking about this for awhile at times, and I just wanted to get ya'lls input on this. I'm 55 years old now, been working ( wrenching ) on atcs, atvs , motorcycles, small engines for around 28 years now. at times I love what I do, other times, I feel burned out, need to slow down, go ride instead of wrench so much. my question is, when do ya'll call it quits ?, do you enjoy working on your toys all the time ?, or do you get that feeling its just gone on to long ?. I don't know how much longer I will still do this kinda work ?, but it sure feels at times I should be doing something else other than wrench 24/7 !. whats ya'll thought on this subject ?. No I am not kicking the bucket ...yet !..lol, I just feel like I should be enjoying life outside of wrenching at times is all. have I reached the burned out yet ?, have or do ya'll ever feel this way ?. tell me what you think !..thanks.

  11. small update: spent a few hours lastnight out in the shop, doing some small detail work. installed the oil cooler on the frame ( have not hooked lines up ), installed lower front engine mounting bracket, installed header pipe with a fresh coat of bbq paint. then spent the rest of my time getting my little ele heater cleaned out, and back to working, got a little chilly in there !. some seals I had ordered the other day for front end might make it here today ?, not sure ?, they show to be in north little rock post office early this morning , no telling if they will make it here today or not ?. I hope ya'll aren't waiting on progress pics every day ?, this build will take me a few to get done !. its a slow process when you go through every nut and bolt, knocking off mud, dirt, rust, then have more right behind it too do the same too !..lol.

If I can get my seals in today ?, at least I can get the front end all back together, that alone will be a big step for me !. I have it all ready, waiting on seals, just killing time going through the small parts here and there while I wait. I will try my best to keep ya'll up to date on progress pics if and when I can keep my hands clean enough ?, and remember to take them !..lol.

The Warn winch comes with a roller fairlead.

    Also cable, which I prefer.

No plow.  We just don't have that much snow here.  At least for the least few years.

The truth is, I probably won't use this winch much at all.  I was out on the trails every week last summer and never had an opportunity to use a winch.  Just a lot of people telling me I should have one, and once that one opportunity comes up to use it, I'll appreciate it.

I have a friend in a Toyota FJ and he's out on the trails all the time, stuck 3 times in 7 years.  And one time where no trees were to pull onto.  He carries a shovel and digs himself out (so he says, I haven't seen it, and I been out with him a lot.)

    dc

no beefs with cable, I just find it easier, lighter to use rope, and no more stuck fingers and hands !..lol. I have been out in the sticks, did not have a winch, as always..when you dont have one ?, YOU WILL WISH YA DID !..LOL. better to have it, not use it, than not have it, and need it !..lol.

At the moment I'm only having a problem with the Warn mount plate.  As I say that's because they use bolt holes onto the frame, at the top, which the KFI has tabs that bend over the sides and over the holes where the bumper bolts in.  Those are just far more easily accessible.

    Thanks

    dc

send it back, get a KFI plate, and a KFI roller fair lead if your winch is rope  ?, and you plan on putting a plow on it ?. I run roller fair lead on all my rope winches, hawse fairlead is a very bad idea in my book.

  14. i'm not sure why your having so much trouble mounting your new winch ?, but I know in all my winch installs ?, with my fav warn pro vantage 2500-s, KFI mounting plate, KFI roller fair lead ( its best to use roller fair lead when using rope ! ), I have never had one problem installing my set up. all my power cables, contact switch, everything went together smooth straight out of the box. I guess this is why I stick with a well known brand product :-).

I tested the start button and the run switch they tested good I also tested the plugs on the harness side of the cdi like the manual says they all tested good not sure where to go next I was thinking the fuel cut off relay cause figured if that went bad it would think it's rolled over and would not let it run been trying to get the cover off it to there is only a ground and one wire going to the battery and one going to cdi from what I see in the diagram was going to try and trick the cut off into thinking it's not rolled over to see if that is what the problem is

the fuel cut-off does not work like a bank angle sensor, the fue cut-off relay works off back pressure from the carb, as well as crank position from the pick up coil, through the c.d.i. does the oil light come on when you turn the key on, then shut back off after a couple sec's ?, if not ?, then the fan control unit is bad, but this would mean its not firing the spark plug, which I dont think thats your problem here.

  16. start with an oem fuel pump, check/replace fuel cut-off relay. I read your other thread from old site, ( which is why your here I hope ? ..lol ), holding the start switch to keep it running tells me the fuel cut-off relay or fuel pump is not getting power unless its turning over. the oem pump should only work when the crank is turning over. simple test: spray some starting fluid ( short, small burst ! ) into the back side of carb, if it cranks this way ?, then its a fuel issue. if it does not '' crank over '' this way ?, then its a compression issue ( which I don't think ? ) it is ?. my money says its a fuel issue, spec if you do not have an oem fuel pump on it :-).
