    Those may not be Lady Bugs. We have Japanese Beetles that were just introduced to my part of Texas a few years ago. They gather in large pods in my barn.

    I remember using the cover of  a pack of paper matches as a feeler gauge to set the points on anything with points ----

     

    I had a Bronco with a Mallory dual point distributor , double trouble , till I figured out it would run with one set of points 

    I thought the dual point distributor had two rotor cams so the points would operate better at ultra high RPM's so the points controlled four cylinders each.?

    This evening I tested the spark with a screwdriver and it was fairly strong. I tested spark with and without the boot on the wire and it didn't seem to make a difference. So now I think it's probably the plug. We will see when it gets here.

    Good idea.......when in doubt, replace the spark plug. I would trim off some of the coil wire for insurance.

    Fish, my shop is in Old Town Spring.......we had flooding and gusty winds but that's all. I live in Willis which is about 24 miles north and it was the same with much less rain. We probably got six inches here in Spring if I had to guess.

    I scrolled up to see this was an old Honda three wheeler.......I forgot what you were working on. LOL I read the every response to get caught up on the subject and forgot. By the way, from my experience, I have never seen a bad condenser prevent spark. I will cause an erratic spark which can be very difficult to diagnose. Usually the points go bad before the condenser which is why most don't know what a bad condenser does to an ignition system when it is literally the only thing wrong.

    Only very old ignition systems use points and condenser. I assumed this was a CDI ignition. Ps. Never check spark thru a spark plug gap because a bad spark plug will spark with no compression and then lose spark under compression.

    You need to confirm that it loses spark before doing anything else. Pick out a screw driver or something similar that fits into the spark plug cap and can also be positioned so the steel shank can spark against a cooling fin or anything else that is clean and grounded, Then when it dies again, quickly check the spark by the proven method you came up with. Two very common problems are a dirty kill switch and a coil wire. The coil wire/spark plug lead can be trimmed back about a half inch or more which exposes a non corroded portion. The black plastic cap just screws out of the wire and screws back into the wire. The resistor you mentioned can cause problems as well.

    Was prepping the 2wd fleet yesterday , for a ride today , red , blue and green and the green 300 wasn't idling too good , snowballed, so I pulled the green tank and dumped it , the inside the tank is not too clean , so I dug up another tank , but it is red , pulled the carb and did a quick clean with an aerosol can , the idle jet was plugged up , cranked it up on the bottle and she sounded fine , so I wet sanded the red tank  with some 600 and it is good enough for paint , it was Rustoleum Camo Forest Green , I was out of that paint and the guy at the HomeDepot closest to me said they are not getting it any more , so I had to go to the other side of town and sure enough that store had some , 2 cans left , bought both, but did not have the weather or the time to paint it , so it is riding Christmas colors today Red / Green ---- it is amazing how each one of the three have their own feel

    I have two trx 420's and they have their own feel too! Ha Ha. One has many more hours on it so the seat has a soft spot the size of my butt and it was wrecked hard once into a rocky creek and has never steered the same since.

  12. If I remember correctly the dual clutch model uses oil pressure in the dual clutch system. Perhaps the oil in the system drains down in the sump giving a false high reading. Starting it first and checking it after shut down may be the actual running level after priming the oil in the shifter?

  13. Yes, a torch tip cleaner can be used to make a jet larger.....in fact my wife's crf 150 has a 100 main that I filed out a little because I "uncorked" it. I learned that Keihin jets are sized/numbered in mm so a 42 is .42mm etc......I converted mm to thousanths when necessary.

    Yes, keihin went down to 32. Special order was possible for a 30 but I knew it needed to be much smaller that 30 so why waste my time buying it.

  15. Sorry I haven't posted here in a long time guys but I do peek in on occasion to stay informed a little. I wanted to share/brag a little this morning. Ha Ha   I bought a KTM 200 XC W a few months ago and have been spending time getting the jetting perfect. It came with the wrong needle so JD Jetting set me up with a custom needle but I needed a slow jet lower than the 42 that was recommended. I continued leaning it down until I got to a #32 and Keihin didn't offer anything smaller. So I started filling in spare pilot jets with lead solder using first a drill bit to make a hole that was smaller. When my supply of micro drill bits couldn't provide a small enough hole I started soldering it with various sized wire installed to make a hole. Just solder and pull the wire out.....I finally found a wire that measured .065" which is close to .165mm.....#165-#166. It's perfect! It took several hours of fiddling but I think it's going to be just fine. Of course I need to actually ride it in it's element to see the finer details. I'm so happy I just had to share this with ya'll..........someone will appreciate this.

  16. I sold my 2001 YZ 250 a few days ago. It wasn't the best bike for me at my age. This 2013 KTM 200 XCW should be more appropriate. Light as a 125, much newer design, made for offroad and much better steering.  Has a stator that supports aftermarket lights. Six speed etc...

    Skipped a few pages but I haven't seen any love for the Shindawas. My dad had a small shindawa before someone needed it more than him and took it out of his truck. That thing would start 2nd pull no matter how long it laid up. Loved that thing. I'll probably get him another one one year. 

    They are good machines. I almost became a dealer for them back in 1984ish? Many parts were interchangeable between different models. I ended up buying a T20 trimmer. It still runs good today! 38.5 years!

    I stick with OEM. I've ran the performance cams in the Rincons and can't say they did anything by themselves. You will need a head gasket, head cover gasket, camshaft and followers. You might want to get the exhaust gasket on the cylinder head as well. With only 500 miles on it all the other parts should be like new yet. A little tip when setting the timing, lay a flat card/razor blade on the head to help line up the mark.

     

    If you have a local dealer they might have the stuff in stock. Ordering online I go through Rocky Mountain ATV for my stuff.

    Is there a quality problem with the original parts?

    Unless I missed where you have done it already, take the time and inspect the cam followers (lifters). I bet your going to find one that has wear on it (if you can get it to pull out) and starting to wear the cam lobe down. I've done this rodeo a few times and that is what I would do. Actually I would plan on replacing the camshaft and do the inspection on the tear down just to confirm, but that's me.

     

    The ECM does have a rev limiter built in but I have never seen one mess up to do this, online or in my shop.

    I thought I read something about the rev limiter for reverse being enabled in forward too. That would do it correct?

In early 2000, we switched over to Yamaha's, both Kodiaks, again, good machines. Then again, around 2010, we went over to Polaris, both Sportsmans, ended up with PS models later on, and what a nice change that was, lots of fun to ride. Then, speed up to 2021, both getting older, took a look at the new 520 Rubicons with - EPS - IRS - DCT, took them for a ride, and we were both sold ! The DCT shifts like butter, after the software update, and  yes, not that great in mud when in DCT - but you also have the - Electronic shift option which works very well for everything. When we both go out for rodes, my wife just loves how the PS works, and how effortless it is to drive. She can pretty much do a full day on the trails now, with no fatigue like before. I mainly use mine for hunting Big game, and I must admit, when we are is the dense forest, these things are the most nibble quad i have ever driven. It just seems small, and its very easy to maneuver around trees and stumps, and I don't have to worry about any belt issues in the deeper water. Put the Diff Lock on in Low first gear, ! near pull anything out of the bush, again, with no belt slip. Also, with their new electronic reverse change as of 2020, that was the hold back for me, and it now also works great. It would be pretty much impossible now for us to want to look at anything else. 

    Good luck shopping, but taken them for a ride should tell the story. 

    Thank you for the personal touch. Does the Rubicon come in 2 wd? We dont plan on deep mud or ice......our 2wd seems adequate.
