  1. Thanks Fish.....looks like very good information. I did some searching yesterday before asking for help and discovered some of these areas but your suggested site is better.....thanks. I'm looking for someone that's been there a time or two and can advise me based on their experience.

  2. I plan on riding Moab Utah this October 2022. Dirt bikes and wheelers. I've never been there so I'm looking for Maps and advise. We will be taking a toy hauler so suggestions for camping spots with central locations for riding areas. Thanks

MrClean , interesting  , I never heard about the sticking a feeler gauge between  the piston skirt and the cylinder wall 1/2 half  down the bore method before >>>> I send my cylinders to G+H and let them send me a piston, rings and bore job that match  , can go wrong with the measurements or the price and you won't be wasting 6 hours of labor and part money

It's a quick method to get a "Ballpark"  measurement.

  4. It's impossible to say what happened but I do know that the sounds coming from the valve train etc. are alarming. A quick method to check piston to cylinder clearance is to insert a feeler gauge between the piston skirt and the middle of the stroke on the cylinder start with .002 and move up. shouldn't be more that .003 in my estimation. Shadetree, Fish....what's your

     opinion?

Meatballs and meat sauce , with baked mac  and cheese coming

Think I told this story before , really takes me back , my Dad and Grandfather had a friend Joe Lopinto , he was a motorcycle sheriff in Jefferson Parish where his Grandson is now the head sheriff , Joe lost his leg in a motorcycle wreck and limped around with his prosthetic ,   Joe had a 40 arpents farm ( land measurement in the old days , a little larger than an acre ) along the lower Mississippi River in Historic Braithwaite and his brother had 40 next to it , greatest rabbit hunting I ever been on , hunting rabbit there is a story in itself to tell , we went down to his farm almost every weekend and would  hunt and fish , help out with chores and eat real good , he was Italian and could cook well , his brother was business agent of the Union I was in , he was also my neighbor and my number one fishing mentor and the other brother owned a very good old school restaurant , so Joe's spaghetti was unbelievably good , I can remember him morning on it at daylight , chopping seasonings , he used a crayfish boiling pot and made a 5 gallon or more size pot full every Saturday , the meat was potluck , meatballs  rabbit , squirrel , sausage , pork chops , boiled eggs , duck , there wa s no telling what you would come up with , I remember a time when nutria ( water rabbit , LOL )  was in there ---- so the story is Meril was a really cool guy we worked with , he had one eye made of glass from an accident he had , and when he looked around , one went each way and him being so crazy  funny made it hard to not laugh around him , so Meril pulls up at the farm while we all sitting at the table drinking coffee , we were just talking about the squirrel that Joe raised when it fell out the tree when it was a baby and lived  in the pecan tree right out the window ,  ten we hear , BAM , Meril shot the squirrel and came walking into the backdoor with the squirrel hanging by the tail saying I got something for the pot , Joe came undone on him , LOL

So the rabbit hunting story , the fields would grow over with briar bushes  ( blackberry ) , and the rabbits were thick , so during the winter they would cut the grass with a bush hog , an acre at a time , cut around in a square then surround the area with guns , keep cutting around and the rabbits would start running out  with every pass more and more , my Dad taught me never get on Merrill's right side , remember he had one eye , merril shot Joe's plastic  leg all up , then hit the good one , should have heard that , we had some good times , shoot rabbits by the hundreds

Great story Fish. i did the same thing as your rabbit hunting but it was rats instead. I had 30 acres north of Lufkin Texas. I had a pond built and the grass would grow 6 or 7 feet tall behind the dam. While mowing the rats would cluster up in the rapidly reducing tall grass. I'd sic my dog on them.......he loved it! Had friend over once with a 22 rifle..........he loved it too.

  6. Wonder Monkey, I wouldn't trust that one because the range is too wide. Go to a motorcycle shop and get a Motion Pro brand or another that is quality. I.prefer the ones that come stock with the TRX420. Small and very accurate. Probably around 10 bucks?

  7. I have found that cheap pressure gauges are usually incorrect by several pounds. The low pressure gauge that came with my 420 is very accurate. Frankly a half pound makes a noticable difference so precision psi readings are very important to me. 3 psi to 3.5 psi is my range......3 psi for very rough terrain 3.5 for average terrain. Perhaps a few psi higher for acceleration and speed once a year.

This reminds me of my younger days when I'd be at Spring Creek for hours in the hot summer and forget to bring water to drink. You didn't want to drink from Spring Creek ........trust me. Water, water ever where but not a drop to drink.

I saw this late, looks like Ya'll got the rain. The center moved south of us instead or north of us. We got some gusty winds and  1 or 2 inches of rain.

  10. How are things this morning? If the roads allow travel in your area I can bring you some supplies. Do you need help? I have barrels of gas, chain saws, generator, supplies are plentiful here. Also the owner of Gallery Furniture here in Houston is loading trucks right now to deliver to your area. Supposedly you just ask them and they will help. Call Gallery Furniture I guess and take it from there. Fish,  I'm just six hours away?  Me and my 16 foot flat bed can be headed your way....just ask.

Two eye walls? The only other time that happened was in the late 80's! Hit the unpopulated area in South Texas. About 180 mph winds if memory serves me right.

Cat 5!!!!!!. I'm at church right now so I missed that info. Your storm surge may be 10 feet now?

  13. Fish, they live on the south shore........can't remember the name of the small town. I just saw on the weather that it shifted to the east which increased your surge about one foot

     Hang tight bro.

  14.  Hey Fish, what are your plans for the hurricane. We have  some friends that live around lake Ponchetrain (spelling?) and they left at 5am this morning for Conroe. We may host them a few days.

WOW ,  crazy crap always happens to me , but it is all good

Yesterday I had a angiogram thru the wrist  , think they call that a cardiogram or such , so the doctor tells me that just one of my arteries is 100% blocked off and has been that way for a long time , another artery was moved over and plumbed it's self into place , this is not an unusual occurrence so he says , also after talking around with friends yesterday I know two people have this same thing  happen to them  ,  like the body did the repair on it's own , both of them left the situation  alone ------ but here is where it gets weird ,  my doctor who is the man when it comes to wrist cardiogram work , says there is a doctor in the Oschner system that is the man when it comes to this 100% blockage thing , he got him a Dremel set up in a angiogram machine that goes in there and clears out that blockage with out open heart surgery   -----  I told the wife I  might just leave it like it is , going to talk with the doctor  next week

Sounds like a great invention but how do you filter or remove the crap that is removed? I wouldn't want that circulating around waiting to give me a stroke .

No, it doesn't.   getting it started on a prime allows the fuel pump time to pick up fuel and fill the carb

    5 hours ago, 56Sierra said:

Fuel boils because of heat and reduced ambient pressure.   If his tank wasn't venting properly the fuel may boil.  The fuel pump, if there is one would have increased the pressure enough for the fuel to remain below the boiling point.  Shut the engine down, the pressure drops and vapor lock occurs.  Picture opening a soda bottle.  The CO2 comes out of solution or a diver accending too quickly and nitrogen boiling if his/her blood.

Increased pressure LOWERS the boiling point. It would also push fuel to the carb thru the pump to the carb. Unless there is important information missing or some of the information is incorrect then my theory holds the high ground. I've been doing this since June of 1983 professionally. I'm not going to argue this any longer.
