I call Wilson's second pic a stover nut , like them better than a nylon insert locking nut , if you read manuals they tell you to discard a used lock nut , I don't unless I feel that the nut turns easily from being worn out , I have put many hours on atvs and have had that steering nut come loose once or twice , like mentioned the cotter key doesn't lock the nut in place as it is not a castle headed nut ------   would guess if you want to make a mountain out of a mole hill and really wanted some extra protection , you could dig up a castle headed nut that would fit , add some washers under that nut to space the nut out so the cotter key would line up with the nut , and that cotter key is tiny diameter , would be better to drill the hole bigger and use a bigger cotter  ----Lock-Tite is the way to go

I thought of doing that mod too but was too lazy. LOL If it happens again I may do something different. In reference to the diameter of the cotter pin mine was fairly stout on the 2014 TRX 420. Now the cotter pins on the tie rod ends, they were tiny.

Most important thing i can think of:

ensure that a spec cotter pin is installed to prevent the nut from backing off in the future.

This cotter pin doesn't lock the nut they way you would expect it to. It just goes thru the end of the shaft to prevent the nut from completely unscrewing. Silly design in my opinion. I almost didn't install it but did anyway.

  3. That's correct, free handle bars! I have a set of Pro Taper S E/seven eighths bars for free. I wanted an upgrade for my 2014 TRX 420 because the stock bars bend fairly easy. I just asked my local Honda dealer to order a set of Pro Tapers or similar high quality bar for my specific wheeler. This is what I got. They are not even close to stock bars. They were acceptable( barely) for me but my wife didn't like them, she said they were too low and had a further reach than the originals. She is correct, they are an inch or two lower and about the same distance further reach than stock. They are 32.5 wide so they are probably a little wider than stock too. Anyhow, if anyone wants them they are yours.........just pay for shipping and $5 for my time. That sounds fair don't cha think? The do have two eighth inch holes drilled in the left side for the locator dowel in the plastic control for the original wheeler.

  4. My 2014 trx 420 has been wrecked by many friends and family members. Wrecked hard only once. It seems usually they just run into something. Since the hard wreck about five years ago it has had some minor slack in the steering. It has worsened slowly thru the years until recently one of my adult daughters ran into a small pine tree with it. Since then the slack has doubled in the play and a minor squeaking noise accompanies it some times. I quit riding it immediately so as not to have something break and causing a steering related crash. I took a quick look and it seemed one or two tie rod ends were loose. They were less than $7 each my cost so I just ordered them because it has many hours on it and wouldn't be a total waste of money at that price. While working on it I noticed the big nut at the bottom of the steering shaft was a little loose. I removed the tie rod bracket to inspect the splines.........everything was fine so i just lubed it and tightened the nut real good. The loose bracket certainly was one of the problems for sure. Now it steers like a new one! Any insight from Ya'll? Oh yeah.........I spent almost the same time centering the handle bar location as I did on the tie rod replacement. LOL

  5. My low hour 2017 trx 420 manual shift wheeler has a few problems that I think are related. None of the lights work and it will not start in gear with the brake lever pulled. There are no other problems at this time. I don't normally ride this wheeler so I don't know when these symptoms appeared but they may be related. I haven't even checked the fuses yet because of the starting in gear problem. I figured I would go straight to some of the smart guys here before poking around. Any wisdom will help. Thanks in advance.

  6. Same thing happened to my fridge a few years ago.I called a friend who is a professional. If I remember correctly he said to check the heating element for the defroster with an ohm meter. If that was ok then it must be the controller. I think my element checked good and it was the controller.

Pretty much what im saying is some combinations require a half link in the chain. This isnt hondas fault. I have an aftermarket swing arm length which i have a feeling is to blame for this odd situation. The adjustment is designed to only account for chain stretch which chains dont stretch like a whole inch so adjustment doesnt ever need to be a crazy amount.

Well that helps my understanding some. Thanks for putting up with us. We just can't wrap our heads around this! LOL

I can tell you it 100% does. I physically couldnt run a 14/37 or 14/39. I set the chain on and turned the carrier a full 360. There was no where it would get tight unless i put a half link in. Brand new chain and brand new sprockets. And i know how to cut chains to the proper length. It was not possible. 14/38 fit perfect. 14/36. Same went for the 13 i was running when it was a 416. 13/38 didnt work. 13/39 worked. 13/37 worked. 13/36 did not. I tried every single one of these. I have 13 and 14 fronts. And everything from a 36 to a 41 rear. Tried many of combinations. Getting ready to add a 15 front to my collection.

This is very unusual. Are you saying that a 14/38 will fit? If so I don't think Honda thought that out very well. Very very little tolerance huh?

  9. I'm not experienced in four stroke wheelers tuning but I am an expert with high performance two strokes and small engines. My thoughts on it idling funny after revving tells me it is a needle or main problem. Here's my logic. When the engine is dropping revs after blipping the throttle it still has the mixture of the blip influencing the overall mixture.  If it is off this will affect the idle speed until the engine turns over enough times to equalize the idle mixture. The is more pronounced in two strokes

The problem is more where the exhaust port is, and the weird curved pipe that goes where the muffler mounts.  I could rig something up externally like this, but with the kids mowing I have a feeling it wouldn't last long.

The mower usually uses a curved header pipe that goes to a muffler that is tucked under the front bumper, blowing forward.

    Here's what it looks like

    108muff.jpg

There are options. Generic pipe thread mufflers are available in many varieties. you could direct the muffler in several other directions. Do a search on different mufflers and see which ones would work best. I'm fairly sure there is something else possible.

Oh don't think I haven't tried to figure a way to rig something up.

The problem is, the muffler is right between the front bumper and the engine, and it's a round can style muffler with a side inlet.  No room to put any other style in there.

If the exhaust port is threaded then use pipes.......if not tap it with 3/4 pipe thread.......should be easy enough

Recently read about wax , either canning wax , some say bees wax , heat the nut up then melt wax into the threads , supposivley it soaked into the threads , never read anyone that said it did work great , might have to give that a try one day

South main Auto tried that trick......didn't work for him. He has an automotive repair shop in upstate New York. I is always fighting rusty/seized/broken bolts because of the salt. Heat seems to work for him. hes has many different Heating devices. One is an electric heating element that wraps around a nut.........it worked on that special occasion.

I took about a dozen 5/16 bolts and nuts today and sand blasted them, they were zinc coated or whatever it is. Going to drill a piece of flat bar tonight and put the bolts through it. Tighten them up and dump them in ocean water lol, I guess I'll torque them to 15-20ft-lbs so I have a reference point, have to look up actual torque spec for 5/16 UNF.

I know similar tests have been done, seen it before on YT, just want to see first hand.

Project Farm on you tube did it a while back. The guy is very thorough.

  15. Check the fuel supply hose. some of them are a hose inside of a hose. The inner hose will collapse with no outward signs. Next i would check the ignition coil. With a spark tester hooked up to the plug run it until it dies. If it was sparking when it died it's got to be fuel except for a one in a million bad spark plug.

Stay safe.  I had a lot of fun cutting trails for us to ride.  It's been a hair over a year since I've ridden, so have a feeling I'm going to have a lot of clearing to do when I get back out there.

Over a year!!!!!!! That's too long. LOL......."How long has it been since you had steaming bowl of wolf brand chili?" LOL

  17. We live in the country but there is an adjacent neighborhood. The other day we heard the ice cream truck and piled on two wheelers and chased it down. We couldn't find it so we split up and went down all the streets until we found it. Me and my wife on one and one daughter, her husband and my grandson on the other. We looked like crack heads needing a fix real bad racing up and down the streets. Ha Ha.

  18. I wanted to lighten our spirits a bit by sharing with Y'all some great times with my family. Some may remember that there is an abandoned 25 acre sand pit adjacent to my 13 acres. Recently me and one son in law have been expanding on our trail system in the pit by shoveling dirt/sand off cliffs and making some cool climbs and descents plus connecting the trail system together better. The trails are some 100% sand plus other areas with clay/sandstone. The trails are getting worn in with berms beginning to build and creating some circuits. Great times with both sons in law, grandson, both daughters and the wife.  Plus a Granddaughter in 10 days? Lots of shooting , grilling and riding without leaving the house!!!!!. I always dreamed of days like this. God Himself gave me my dreams. I'm looking forward to more good times. Ps. there are many ,many more areas to develop.......cliffs on three sides reaching as high as 35 or 40 feet!
