Time for brake work

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

the only mechanical issue my Forman has is it has absolutely no stopping power. My rear I believe is frozen and I haven’t even looked at the fronts yet. If my suspicions are right and I need to brakes all the way around, are there any kits out there to order?

Rocky Mountain ATV will have everything you need.

Rear brake cam is likely seized in the brake backing plate or rear brake drum is full of crap.

Take everything apart and clean up real well and you'll get the rear brake working again, it wont be any great stopping power but better than what you have.

Front brake shoes might need adjustment or cylinders are probably seized, depending on what condition the cylinders are in you might be able to get them cleaned up and working again without replacing them.

The adjusters on front can be a real pain to get loose and working too and they have left and right hand threads so don't mix them up.

I would replace front and rear shoes while in there and clean the drums up real good too.

Its also a good time to flush old brake fluid out of front brake system, just don't let master cylinder reservoir go dry while doing it.

I recently went through my brakes on 2000 450S was able to salvage wheel cylinders and adjusters, I just bought new seals for them.

Fronts will provide better stopping power than rear when working.

Lots of guys here do the disc conversions and like them much better.

Good luck!!

do yourself a huge favor, CONVERT THE FRONT BRAKES TO DISK BRAKES !!!, you will never thank me enough. either high lifter or super atv sells these kits, buy it, install it, don't look back. forget rebuilding the drum brakes, they suck !.

@THH great input. I will start here!

@shadetree if a simple cleaning doesn’t work, I will go this route. Looks like it’s a direct swap with no modifications or supporting parts needed on Super ATVs site. Pretty good deal at $240.

do not waste your time with drum brakes, go disk brake conversion !. take my word on this, you will be very happy with front disk brakes !. yes, its a direct bolt on.

05-11 Foreman, 05-14 Rubicon, and 06-up Rincon brakes will also bolt on at the ball joints.  You'd need knuckles, hubs and rotors, and calipers with the caliper mounting brackets.

The Superatv kit is easier and cheaper unless you happen to find someone parting one of those above mentioned Hondas who will sell you the front brake stuff cheap.

I just found an old set of discs/hubs knouckles etc from and 07 Foreman 500 I picked up for 75 bucks going to put them on my 04 450ES

I just about gave up trying to fix those nasty rusted seized brake adjusters on the front drum brakes, I got them working but swore it was the last time.......LOL

I usually do pretty good heating the adjusters up in a vise red hot to get them loose and putting antiseize on them but these... were.. something else...

that whole front brake design leaves a lot to be desired, with the rubber drum seal and all that... never thought too much of that setup -high maintenance for sure

Bargain for $75!

Those 05-11 discs are better working and easier to work on than the newer model discs too.
