Since the snap ring is out, get a bigger hammer. Since you probably can't hit it square make sure to work your way around the bearing. An air hammer usually will drive them right out. It will come out the side the snap ring was on.

Makes sense but when u hit solid u can't go anywhere, Mel thinks there's a snap ring, the only one I got out that I could see is in the floor, so I'm confused as to what that is on top of the bearing. Going to see if I can pry it out with a screwdriver. The object above the bearing.

  2. Well got the snap ring out finally a few questions though.

Is the bearing race hardened, I hit a rust ring and can't get the bearing to pull out or budge. Feels like a 2nd ring, it's a gap I can put my fingernail in, is this normal when you pull one part on a 2WD 300? That whatever is is is stopping me from pulling the bearing. If it's a rust ridge would heat n quench with a torch compromise the bearing race? I'm almost out of ideas but puzzled by if that is a rust ring or something else.

    Help requested. 😁

you better think long and hard about buying a motorcycle made in the 70's ??!..parts WILL NOT be easy or cheap to find !!. what size bike are you looking for ?, i've been tossing the idea of selling my '08 shadow 750 spirit, not selling my magna though !..lol

125 or 175 preferably, don't tell fish lol but I'll think on it. In the end I may stick to my dream of having an old CJ3A jeep. Ones close to me for 1,600.00 I redone my old Willys MB so I know what I'm in for.

If I were buying a dirt bike from the 70s , I  would be looking for a 2 stroker

I thought about it, but I don't wanna be shifting all the time, heard you have to dont know if it's true, plus I'm new and dont need instant response. Just asking if you seen the concern I had in the post above being a first time rider, although been watching riding motorcycle videos and looks easy on tarmac. I'll update when I get it depending on bills taxes ya know.

Wow , that looks nice ---- I remember the SL series as being the most Dirt ready ,  the XL and the CL series as Trail and Street and the CB series as Street

So from what your saying a CL125 like one of these would b easier for dual use, mostly street but tear up trails on weekends, (that's the plan assuming life doesn't get in the way)

Any tips first time two wheeler ,control ,technique since handles different on dirt? Or just something I have to figure out. My mom rode back in the 70s and I can't wrap my head around plant the rear tire in a turn to avoid laying down since don't have pavement to grip onto when leaning. Seems to me full power right in or middle of the turn regardless of lean angle u go straight for the wall or whatever is on the upper side of the curve or turn. Just my logic.

if the snap ring is not on top of the bearing under the dust seal ?, go from the bottom up, long bar, hammer, beat it up and out of the top. i did not see a snap ring ?, but ..you got it so muddy looking ?, i can't see nuff'n !..lol. DO NOT HIT THE INNER RACE ONLY ON ONE SIDE !!, SWITCH SIDES SO YOU WONT JAM IT IN THERE !.

Sorry lol had to start soaking it

  8. 2wd sorry yes I'm at the rusted on there point and I do have a new snap ring. Was just checking to see. I thought of torch but the rubber brake line close had me concerned. You said to soak n move it do I could see the ends I don't even know where they are at. I'll try to drive the bearing through the top this weekend.

  9. Hey guys, it's been a while, been busy working a summer job still am. Anyway I'm replacing the lower bearing, any advice or tricks for that pesky snap ring or cir clip that holds the bearing in. Gotta dive the bearing from the top down I think. Here's where I am so far PB Blaster don't have the good stuff. The top seal if u look from the bottom is still in by the way. Driving me nuts.  Or is the snap ring on top of the bearing hard to exactly tell by the parts diagram and looking from the ground.

just go ask him what he will take.... if you want it that bad, that's about the only way you'll know. 🙂

If your replying to me curious about that JD 400 mower, I'll ask but the guy is always concerned with making a buck, good heart but doesn't chat much.

Well he picks all the weeds out of small square areas in the yard, and then only mows the areas that he's picked clean of weeks.

"You know mowers scatter weed seeds, right?"

So yep, new Ferris zero turn got used twice this summer.  The rest of his mowing was with an old POS Craftsman push mower.

His 1981 John Deere 750 with a grooming deck on the rear has about 400 hours on it.  The JD dealership tried for years to buy it back from him because it was still practically new and their cost went through the roof on small tractors.

I had to pick weeds by hand in a lady s flowerbed oh joy lol. Hated it mirco manage to the extreme

I'm trying to get the ball rolling to see if my neighbors buddy will sell me his JD 400 garden tractor. I'd love to have it.

i wanted to post... but i don't have a push mower..... but if i was going to purchase one, it would be a snapper with a briggs plant.... been a fan of briggs engines for years from go karts to water pumps ... and grain gravity flow auger wagons, square bail hay elevators. small gen sets .. etc.... not a single issue, just depends on how well it's take care of, IMO. my 35 ton splitter has a Kohlar ... not a single issue ever cold, or hot., same goes for my mantis honda powered tiller .. @SamUK , was one of the reasons i jumped on that wood splitter, he's a big fan of the Kohler engines, after a couple years .. i see more and more people going with kohler engines .. even some of the new snappers have moved from briggs to kohler.

Kohler for me would be the K, Magnum, and command series. Briggs for me, opposed twin, and 5-8HP flathead. Just me. Hey don't matter if ya don't have one just wanted to see opinions and thoughts.

  14. Welcome to the form, I couldn't find the photo bcsman had put up it was a photo of retros post I think but couldn't find it, I was going to say IF it's like the ranchers or rincon far as the shift motor you can take it off, take the gears our "remembering where there went before" and put white lithium all temp grease in and after you reassemble it, should shift much smoother of course assuming you have a shifting issue. Or you just want it to shift better.

I’ve got a Briggs motor in my 21” Poulan Pro from Home Depot. I’ve run it for 6 years now. I just change oil, clean filter, check plug once a year & good to go.

Guess I'm more partial to the older ones, newer ones to me and in my research aren't built right, but hey guess I'm in a time warp lol.

My briggs 725ex 190cc 21" self propelled TB230 troybilt has been hands down the best push mower i have ever used. Had it for 9 years. Changed the oil and sharpened the blade. It has auto choke so it has always started first pull since the very first start-up. It is still running on the original plug. I use no fuel additive and by the grace of god it starts first pull every year after sitting all winter long. Deck is finally starting to chip and surface rust so probably i will pull the motor and re-paint it before this next year of mowing. Also the front wheels have had zero tread since year 7. But honestly i couldnt ask for more reliability.

I have had nothin but issues with Briggs, only good one we have is an old 80s I think 8hp flathead water pump engine, sat forever drained the tank put good fuel in, pulled it over a few times to prime, fourth time, fired right off. Again sat for who knows how long.

The Kawasaki FS691V 23hp on my 54" Hustler Fastrak has been a good one.  I passed 1000 hours last summer on it.  I bought it in 2013.  I've done nothing to it except change the oil.

Should've said push mower choice but hey if it works use it lol. I heard those are good engines. Never ran em.

  18. I'm just curious what mowers or engine choices you guys have and like. Me personally Briggs and Kohler are NOT what they used to be, and don't get me going on the 450-550e series briggs, I have an HRX217HYA. Love it, I accidentally deleted the first picture so I got a screenshot. Bought it almost a year ago 4/28/20, and it does very well especially the GCV200 engine. Hydrostatic transmission blade stop, Nexite deck. I'm the envy of the neighborhood. 800.00 but worth it.

My mom got a mower for free, troy built 21in last year, and that thing is a steamy turd, I work on it more than I use it. Can't get it started for one thing without fighting it for 20 minutes a putt and stall at a time, gotta drill out the rediculosly small jet to let more fuel in, just haven't done it yet. Been using the good one.

Was that cold or warmed up? You gotta have it warmed up so everything will be tight when ya do it. Try warming it up real good and reporting back. 😁

Wilson, what I meant was for him to see if the compression raised when it was hot and if so how much.
