  1. one draw back here is ..... row crop farmers use some bad pesticides especially on soybeans and deer eat lots of soybeans .... so hunters around now mainly hunt for the trophy racks .... not so much for the meat.... that's a waist IMO ... other row crop farmers higher hunters just to thin out the population, just kill them, and let them lay for the buzzards ...
  2. how does it compaire .....with a deer steak ..... i wouldn't mind trying it, I've used deer burger to cook with, and i like the taste better then ground beef by far...
  3. oh ... I'll eat a hamburger, or a steak. any day... just not horse meat ... lol, like i said....I'm not knocking those who like it, it's just not my preference. my family, and every other farmer around here ... raised cattle for milk, and beef, i reckon you could say it's in my blood.
  4. i grew up riding horses .... now.... maybe if i was starving ... and that's BIG maybe ... some people even eat dogs, and cats , rats etc ... those i couldn't eat, rats i wouldn't even think about trying ... but nah... not horses... I've eat all except horse meat. cant do i guess it all depends on where you live ... lol! but being a farmer ... horses played a key role... such a noble animal! ..., i reckon you'll have to call me a whimp on this one... I'm not knocking those who do enjoy it... after all they make dog food from horse meat, but i won't eat horse meat. people also eat dog, cats, and rats. ... i won't go there ether NOT EVEN CLOSE. haha!
  5. i just couldn't, fish ..but on the other hand ... cattle are ugly ... we're doing them a favor by eating them haha!

my bet would be a honey ... now those i de thorn them standing ... never heard of anyone burning the thorns off of a standing honey, but i reckon it could be done .... but .. it wouldn't work here ... they are very strict on burning outdoors (even close to your own home with a source of water , or some other way to extinguish) .... and out on my farm it's just not convenient ... for my deal... I'd rather de thorn, and have to deal with TWRA ....
  7. ouch!! eh, you sport guys... completely defrent ... ..... you recall unklerara ? took me a few to locate this pic, we need to get him over here, he's sure enough a character .. lol. most times I'm in my converes shoes and yes! even sawing wood .. haha! i say be as comfortable as chooses.... anyways ...
  8. i agree! ... greenhorns ... eh who needs um ? lol especially dealing with horses, or cattle ... never let that dream die, Ted .... maybe one day.. you'll be back in sadle ... might not be race horses but still... and it sure does get in your blood ... things one enjoys usually does :-) thats a cool pic ...

sounds like a honey locust .... I'd be hard up to deal with one of those ... that's were you become real good at using a chainsaw for de thorning ... lol... but! if , and i say IF i would only go for those in a fence row , or along the creek bank... never in an open field .. they are murder on equiment tires... most farmers around here just spray to kill them, or dozer them in a brush pile.
  10. sounds like you made the right call in getting away from that place lol! i used to work for a guy just up the street dealing with horses, and he didnt put up with nothing... you were told once.. how things work... if it didnt take, you were out the door... I've had plenty of dealings with horses, and cattle ... working cattle is the most dangerous far more then horses... because we always had a few hands helping us, and the more people you have around the worse it is!! FACT! . and these cattle were wild, when it came to the herd bull ... the hands were told to stay away lieve them alone!! while myself and John moser ... gave shots .. etc ... we're talking 2500 lbs ... that can explode for no reason... lol! .... fact is you can't fully trust any of them horses, or cattle... , but I'd much rather deal with horses .. then cattle any day... no telling how many times I've been chased over a gate .. and sometimes even the gate went for a ride.. I've see all kinds of things dealing with cattle that would blow your mind ... even had one 2 calf momma cow .... had a issue dropping a over size calve ... we had to chase her about 3 hours one rainey nasty muddy night way after dark... and the only option was a cab 4440 johndeere with lights... let me paint this pic as best i can ... this cow was completely crazy!!! and fit to be tied... there four of us my father .. John, were in the dry, Scott ... (some may recall Steve Williamson the black smithing ) it's his older son was on the front riding the weights ... holding on via the air breather stack, i was on the (hay Speer mounted) riding, both of us had ropes.. this fool started charging the tractor .. (1st and only time I've even seen this ) ..... i managed to snag one rear hoof, and Scott got the head ... my pop managed to pull the calf ... both lived, but were sold very soon afterwards ...

hm..... if the wood grain isn't yellow or orange when fresh cut then ... it's not a living healthy osage orange .... I'd have to see some pics to match it.... but a mature VERY mature osage orange doesn't have thorns along the trunk.... just on the smaller limbs ... that's how all mine look ... sounds like those you have maybe honey locust, or maybe black... I've delt with all 3 . honey locust are just plain mean!! thorny from the trunk up, at least the ones i e delt with were.
  12. kind of why I've been toying with idea of wheel spacers ...wider stance .. at least with my deal it would be a plus on safety .... not sure about stress on the drivetrain ..

it's a pine, now what type ... i don't know .. never looked it up... my grandfather planted many many moons ago ... I've never seen limbs grow striaght or almost straight up like those ... the other evergreens don't ... one thing is ... this one doesnt loose as many small branches as the others do... lol ... so she doesn't add much to my yard cleanup after a storm... i don't know if that's a locust ... a foot at the lower trunk is a good size osage orange / locust... how old are they ? (best guess) if thats what Pete ?? brother ?? was cutting on... you can't mess around with a dull chain .... cause those are some seriously hard wood trees to deal with.. if the saw dust was yellow ... then yes it very could be locust aka hedge osage ...etc ..
  14. dang! that's always been a worry of mine too....i always remember to take those handy talkies along ...and let my neighbor dale know if he doesn't hear back from me .... he calls me via the radio, or phone ... if I'm running behind...

pine ,if your talking about the one with the split... and what makes a tornado sound like train is the tornado debris ball caused by debris lofting into the air... usually followed by a really distinct smell in the air ... for the few I've actually been through ... basically just a stink you never forget ... much i wish... i can't really describe the smell, just know it's a signature ... of the beast when it's touches down... I'm not frightened of them... maybe it's my curiosity ... I've always be overly curious of bad weather ... been struck a couple times by lightening lol! hail stoned, i could on, and on... ever a dirt devil in a hay field whip up wind rows ? as a kid i used to chase those down while my pop was working ... i must have been about 6 or 7 ... those were the good days ... now people freek out ... sadly there's not too many real men in the country any longer.
  16. thank you! , IMO it's an excellent design .(2 short blades per disk, or 4) .. but being I've never delt with a belt timed cutter ... (gear only) I'm still curious of the timing belt tension .... i have some design (mod ideas) but i'll Waite.. however ... i sure wish i had one like that to tinker with!

i reckon this is slightly weather related ... here's those trees two sugar maple.. and the mangnolia, the dogwood is over to left .... now for the pine ... this pine was struck by lightening , OH? I'd say.. . about .. 20+ years back ... during a tornado outbreak southeast in lynnville tennesee... reports from Maury fire was, it was headed north west (my way) but my worry was the burnt pine i smelled inside .. so i steped out to learned the tree had taken the bolt ... but also notice the temperature drop..and my ears popped from the pressure then,i heard the rushing wind go right over my house... that was about as close as a tornado has gotten here at home , still too close!! didnt sound anything like a freight train... you can gauge the diameter on that pine by the fence post.. she's big!! weather here has been perfect! mid 70's no rain, and a very nice breeze ..
  18. luckey call there ...(glad those kids weren't hurt!h sure must have been a shock for your friend... riding atvs on (all public) roads up in my area is completely illegal ... but the farmers do.... and the law cuts them slack... but with the way things are now, I'm hearing more, and more riding around in the columbia .. I'm not talking road legal utv s ... this is happening over the weekends late at night ... people are just ignoring the laws ...
  19. i used mine when hauling firewood on a particular steep hill.... (north and south) standing on the floorboards, the only way down with a load was zig zag (east and west) down ... no amount of brakes (including engine braking) would have help slow a straight down (north) haul.. the only other way to stop was to head straight east or west... so IMO ... those shifters are worth the money!
  20. bronk, and bull riders... just deal with a defrent mind set animal ... (and do get grounded) i never bronk rode ... but I have had my dealings with bulls... that's NOT for the faint of heart..... and yeah bull riders are just about the most arogant person you could meet .... haha! just about as wild, and crazy as the bulls they ride.. bulls can't be trusted at except for the job there required for breeding ... I've seen many farmer friends try and make pets of them .... and end up getting hurt very bad! I've delt with both horses and cattle about all my life , and you CANNOT make a pet of a bull!!
  21. i was hopping you'd volunteer that information ... lol, i wouldn't mind having a myself a nice pare of riding boots ... but they would need to be work boots too... i reckon I'll go with wolverine , or timberland pro ... etc..
  22. thinking the exact samething ^^^ now, finally some good news for our country !!!
  23. congrats to NASA on a successful launch!
  24. i sure hope they open backup .... you racing guys sure do put alot into those beast... it's ashamed to see them just set... plus i imagine takes a tad to get back into the groove of racing / being chased ... man... i hear you on the rain.... i didn't think it would ever stop here... most rain / flooding we've seen in years! i was finally able to mow again today... those riding boots you got, those we the ones you, and another hand talked about here, did they work good ??
