they just failed all together, would stop spark, the give away was when pushing the start button, it would not spark the plug until you let off on the start button, prob from china ?..lol.

bummer, got a large magnet ?, fastest way I know to find it !.

I know for a fact, the 1996 trx300fw model came from the factory with defective c.d.i's !.

and your 100% sure the cylinder has stock bore and piston ?. stock wise, there is not much anyone can do to increase the hp of these models.

your gonna hate putting red Loctite on those bolts down the road !..lol.

and I stay oem c.d.i.'s with all my atvs. ricks is ok I hear ?, but there are fakes on ebay and amazon !.

I don't recall the correct output ?, but I do know , not all c.d.i's will swap out in all their years, least not without a wire harness adapter.

and what a pain those cases were to take off !!..lol. if the chain came off inside ?, your gonna have fun getting it back on with the cases in the way !..lol.

never seen an o-ring chain on atcs of this model ?. o-ring chains were very common on motorcycles and motocross , but not this model atc that I know of ?. i'm gonna look this up, and see what was sold on it way back then ?, I might not find anything though.
