Splitting Cases... Literally!

Recommended Posts

I believe my intuition was correct & I wouldn’t have had any issue. This is how it looked. I put it on thin, keeping it to the outside, so it may have appeared to many as it squeezed in like it did out.

I’ll have er back apart this am, calling Honda to see if they can order me in the one gasket in lieu of another $65 gasket set. I’ll be calling Total Seal as well. I will pick up some 3M red pads & copper spray today as too.

I hate learning at a cost... never fails...

any other tips, suggestions or things I should know or do on putting er back together?

Thanks to all, for your advice & knowledge.

Nothing like getting one all the way back together and then having something off, and having to do it all over again.

Been there, done that, got a whole shelf full of trophies from it!

Awesome, love it! $98us for 2 sets of rings, & $86cnd for another full gasket set as the one gasket is discontinued. Swear to gawd this 300 has more $$ spend on it over a new truck. Got the 3m cookies & copper coat. I’ll get the cases all prepped again today.

future words of wisdom grass hopper !, most gaskets ( spec center gaskets ! ) if ya hadn't used that yamabond/hondabond on the gaskets ?, you could have re-used it from the get-go !. same goes for all the other engine gaskets IF ya don't put sealant on them ?!!, i do it here and there, have to pull a clutch cover off , stator cover off, or heck, even rip the cases back apart ?!, and i've had really good luck re-using the new gaskets !. if your very careful when you pull them back apart ?, 9 out of 10 times, you wont rip them enough to matter, or even at all ?, and can re-use them.

I don't know about Canada , I just found quite a few after market center case gaskets that were sold individually   on e-bay for as low as $10 with shipping

Yes I know shade..seems strange, but I never heard it break, seen it break ect. NO IDEA how I didn’t notice & got it together. It was the second ring. Just glad I found it!

Is it one of the old ones you replaced that broke?

No, I verified the old rings were all intact. It was indeed the #2 compression ring.... 2 new sets will be here monday.

Just got home from work last nite. Quad season here is in full swing & I'm dead in water!

New gasket kit & rings arrived. Here goes take two. I’ll clean the cases up, have copper coat spray & will not use Honda Bond on center or clutch case cover. Fingers crossed all goes well.

Thank you guys!!! I will admit that after using the cookie to clean everything up nice & shiny, that YES there was remnants of the Honda Bond inside.  It was super clean & degreased using brake kleen. Then I sprayed the gasket with the copper coat & got the case on. Just have to install the bolts & torque back down to 7ft/lbs now.

Do u all think I’m safe to reuse the base & head gasket. It was torqued down.... or should I just toss a new set on?

nvm.. dumb question... I’m installing new & I’ll keep the others as spares.

I need help. This is what I feared... I cannot get the shift drum cup on the way the manual says...

The one pic shows how it was, then u can see the bolt hole doesn’t line up..

Ok, so just line it up correct & install the cup? Is that what I understand? Why does the manual say to have the knob down? I tried shifting it so it would line up down, but wouldn’t...

when you turning the shift drum, ( assuming you have the tranny right ?, and that part installed facing the right way ? ) then that part ( the long leg ) will sit where its suppose to when you get it in neutral. just turn the output shaft when your turning the shift drum, it should change gears.

I agree with everyone else here. If your worried about a few gouges i would spray the gasket on both sides with copper spray. Never use anything that takes up extra space. The gasket in this case serves a purpose of a spacer just as much as a seal. Im keeping my fingers crossed everything works out bud! I use the 3m round red pads on a drill. The red cleans it up real well and polishes it more than scratching it.

@shadetree that’s why I used copper coat... I’m doing best I know how lol.

Thank you! Yes it was in gear, & obviously u were correct. I turned output shaft & have it perfect now. I should have known! Tomorrow I’ll get the rest of it together.

What goes in this hole? Center of pic behind the clutch? It looks like something was there on my old case & the new to me case... I don’t ever remember removing anything from there! Can’t find anything in the manual..
