glad to have you back... fish.... the pics show some major devastation ..... i thought maybe this one might be as bad as Katrina... at least from your description the flooding looks to be I'm like jeep just amaised at the resilience of the people... and pitching in to help there niegbors in need.... just a long clean up process now, but y'all have always over come the devastation.... as you said in another post.. y'all were on the east side of the storm, and from my understanding .. that's worst (or one of) sides to be on... unless being directly in the path of the eye... from my math... y'all were about 90 miles due north east of the eye ? I'm glad the storm surge wasn't as bad as the news made out, to change this up some, i was woken this morning from a smell, i can never forget... the same scent when a tornadoe touches down... it's hard to explain this smell, but it always gains my attention..best way i can explain it is a smell of destruction, it sure brought back some bad memories for me, and have been thinking about all those times this morning.

thank you bighanded ... it was just an idea, but this thread is so popular it might not need to be a sticky, it's not up to me, just an idea i had, because MTEARS has provided me with much better (top notch) reports where as the news / media has not even come close, and this thread does the same just about top notch information from around the country where our members are located.

Sun is out here again this morning. We had 24 hours of on and off drizzle and that was it. Probably didn’t get a half inch of rain during that time

just what i thought is happening that cold front has stalled out the storm front,  i see now the storm is slightly expanding just over bowling green Kentucky ... jeep y'all might get some of this after all.

Your right , no need to push it , it will get done when it gets done ----

Today was fuel day , and it is hard to get , left home early and was the  6th  car in  line at the RaceTrax filling station  in Slidell , big station over 20 pumps , got to the pump and next to fuel and  they called out of fuel , the couple of other stations open in Slidell had lines of 40 by then , Sam's Wholesale  gas station was 100 + , went home ate breakfast and got the wife , went to Mississippi , started in Bay St Louis ( 35 miles ) and the line was 15 per pump and most stations empty ,  got to  the bay by HollyWood Casino and the line was 4 , got the precious juice , so now I got 11 -  5 gallon cans ,   on the way back from Mississippi  when we got off  Interstate 12 at  Sam's Slidell  ,  gas line was 200+

Glad you got stocked back up.

I took Dad's truck and filled up all my cans at dawn yesterday, just in case we saw a post-Katrina gas problems again all over the SE US.

I keep about 60-70 gallons of gas on hand most of the time, and Dad probably has another 40-50.  We gradually use it in the mowers/ATV's/saws etc, and keep the stock rotated, but I was about 1/2 through my 70 gals so I went ahead and topped off.

As usual, I am completely amazed at the difference in the people living in the country in Louisiana and the people living in New Orleans.

The countryfolk are taking care of each other and doing cleanup themselves, while those in the city are sitting on their butts screeching for someone to come help them.

Maybe sitting on their rears after the looting marathon.  The pictures from 16 years ago were just downright heartbreaking to see looters in waste deep water carrying a big screen TV over their heads.

What Fishfiles did by giving the neighbor 10 gallons of gas is what I believe should happen.  Gold star for Fishfiles.

same here.. I used to keep more than that, but I had to admit I was lazy about rotating and so over time I've let my can count dwindle to where a spare 20 gallons on the ground is all I really keep.

the chevy 3500 diesel has i think a 36gal? and I keep 2 spare 5gal cans in the truck bed plus 2 more on the ground. and the cargo van is a 26 gals gas...the commuter car is only 18 gals

all are near full.

I have 3 cases of can/bottled long term fuel...pure gas that doesn't go far, but lasts long...can at least keep the motorbike rolling and feeds the smaller honda eu2000

the larger genny is dual fuel and has only seen propane it's entire life..

the 60gal boat tank got topped off last night so I can pull from that.

I'm expecting bags on the pumps around here by Friday..and just in time for holiday travel...so yeah, it'll get crazy here soon enough.

we've literally had em get into gun fights around here as folks waiting in line for the pumps get cut off, etc..temper flare far too easy.

hey...good to hear from you Fish... I was honestly expecting it might be a couple more days of dark.

Many more dark days to come for electricity , for me in Lacombe they are saying maybe 2 weeks , some places in New Orleans could  be 4-6 weeks ------ internet and cable the same time as electricity as they use the same poles ----lucky I can do the Hot Spot and get TV and internet off my phone onto the TV

Yep, with three jeeps full of gas (20 gal tanks) two pickups full, and those vehicles are seldom used and kept full,  and then my can gas we have a lot on hand.

But as Fish has pointed out, with a generator running constantly you'll burn through quite a bit.  I have a 6500 Honda, sis has a 3500 Honda, and Dad has a 4500 Honda.  Running those three would eat through our supply pretty quickly if they ran non-stop. even siphoning out of the vehicles.

When we have an outage I use my EU2000. Run my freezer, fridge, lights etc. A bit over 2 gallons in 24 hours.

That's pretty good.  I have a 25 yr old Yammie 1600 that uses a gallon every 4-5 hours.  On  50% duty cycle keeping the fridge and freezer cold enough I plan on burning 3 gal a day.  I jury rigged the house so I can connect the generator after it's dragged out of the garage to the yard, throw a switch in the basement next to the breaker box and isolate the fridge and freezer circuits.  I also have and extension cord plugged in behind the fridge so the Pretty one can get internet and update FB.🙄

at 1:30 the two houses side by side.  The tan on with the white roof survived much better than the other.   Construction methods?  Luck?  What did this place look like after Katrina?

Yeah, amazing wasn't it.  Right now there's a wife telling her husband, "See, I told you that slip cover was a good idea."

Yet sections of asphalt get washed away and boats get lifted on to bridges.

Has anyone heard how NO fared?  Been wondering if they did bettet this time and if so, was it all the money spent of preparations or was it the storm track/intensity?  Or was it the political party in office?

yep... I try to just use my EU2000..it's a sipper compared to the larger unit.

my deep freezer is in the garage, so I can cycle it with the honda there, and then easily move it to get it close to the kitchen window and cycle the fridge.

we use battery banks for things, like radio or TV during an outage..and more practical experience with both these power solutions has been used many times for camping trips when we are off grid. We can watch movies for hours on the 32" flat screen on a single charge.

I keep a half dozen of the propane 20lb bottles and the camper has the larger tanks on board..so we can cook, enjoy a hot shower, etc...but also I can pull those into use for the larger genny....so when gasoline pumps might be bagged, I've got the propane option which stores a lot longer than gas.

New Orleans did fairly well with the wind and water damage , power and crime are the biggest problem ,  lot of looting going on from what we are hearing

I think there are a couple of reasons for that , one is they have learned to build the houses now with storm brackets and such that the roofs don't come off as easy as before from the wind  , but some house that are reinforced, get destroyed cause the house in front of them gets destroyed by water surge  and floats right into the next house  ---- but then there are the holy interventions , I seen one view of a bed with the bed cover still neatly on it , there was no roof and no walls on two sides of the room , looks like if someone were sleeping in that bed that would have made it thru the entire storm undisturbed

seen exactly the same in aftermath of a tornadoe.... houses standing side by side, one is left, while one is completely destroyed.... with nothing left but the foundation.

And they'll likely get it.

Country people are free animals.  City people are fenced in waiting on their owner to come care for them.

The difference being, if the owner stops feeding them, they'll starve, while the free animals will be fine.

naw...difference is, they'll loot n riot and destroy if they don't get their free stuff.  But yeah, I know I'm not prepared for every possible disaster, and at some point I'll be reliant on the grace of others..but in general, I take a small bit of pride in my efforts to be self sufficient when things get stormy.

on the rare occassion when it's gotten dicey here, me and a couple other neighors are out making the rounds, either on horseback, or ATV with chain saw strapped to the rack ,making sure folks on our street have what they need and that our roads are clear...snow n ice, the trucks never get out here to us. Power is pretty stable, but the amount of outages in our area is tiny compared to more populated places, so they get the attention long before we do...and never mind a call to a deputy..they can be 40 minutes on the other side of the county.
