Brand new member, in more ways than one. Hello and happy Easter from Otterbien, Indiana. Age and health issues prompted me to buy a cheap atv I figured I could fix up a tad. Getting too old to drag a deer out of the woods, so bought an old 1984 Honda trx200. I have NEVER tinkered with an ATV of any type, so expected this to be a learning experience....oy vey. The dude got it fired up, drove it around a bit, and fed me a crock, and since it ran I bought it. Hook, line and sinker. All I wanted was something that would start, run and save me from a heart attack. And it had brand new tires all the way around. Said his grandpa bought it new and he just didn't have the time to fix it.... Said it needed brake cables, master cylinder, battery and a new carb. OK, I figured I could deal with that. Carb was leaking gas pretty bad out the bottom of the carb, but it ran so I took his word for it. Ordered a carb, and it leaks even worse than the old one. Old one wasn't oem either, I discovered. And it now it won't start, period. Cables were the least of the brake problems. The ENTIRE front brake system will have to be replaced to work. Master cylinder, hoses, wheel cylinders, adjusters, shoes and possibly drums. Rear brakes cannot be fixed without a drum, as when I pulled the back cover off, there was nothing left inside but pieces of the old drum. Drum was totally destroyed. Can't believe I didn't hear parts rattling around when he was driving it. The more I look, the more parts I find missing, or replaced with jury rigged garbage, and the more I am convinced every kid in Indiana has tried to fix it before me...lol ANYway....lesson learned. My question is what is up with the carb issues? Fuel just pours out of the drain hose on the bottom of the carb. On both carbs. Choke wasn't even hooked up on the old carb. This can't be normal. And my knowledge of small engines is just slightly greater than my knowledge of Honda or ATV's, which is zero. Tried looking online, and that led me here. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. As it stands, I have a brand new set of tires on a boat anchor..... John

Glad to hear that you got it running better Sounds like most of your problems were just fuel / carburetor related A weak battery wont really cause the issues that you were having with running, but the ES systems definitely need to have a good battery in place for proper operation as far as electronics and shifting, etc. Glad to hear you have a service manual coming, just so you know, we have a pretty much full digital library where are you could have downloaded it for free. You can see the link at the top of the homepage. If you need any more help or have any other questions, just let us know -AKATV

in the pic of the stator ( bottom pic ). that switch that sticks up ?..that is your gear position switch, it tells you on the dash what gear you are in..or when in neutral or reverse ?. see that rolled pin that looks like a TEE ? , the longer end of it faces/sits over the letter N that is stamped on top of the plastic switch right below it when its centered over the letter N.

Your oil looks a bit milky there and seem to have clear water drops on your starter gears in the picture-was this a sunk or deep water ATV? -AKATV

Just wanted to take a minute to thank Ron for the repairs on my speedometer/cluster. Sent from South Carolina to Alaska and I had a working dash in 2 weeks. I definitely recommend this to anyone having doubts about doing it. Ron is a standup guy.

Finally took the time to go over the ole girl. Yesterday I got both diffs & trans case drained, flushed, & refilled. Gave er a go over. Today I’m going at the mysterious valve cover leak again. I’ve tried in the past both red high temp & Honda Bond. Leaked with both. So I’m on fence which one to go back with… found my crank case vent cracked as well, so I have to replace that too

I was cleaning out one of my sheds a few weeks ago and decided to move my parts/project machines out to the trees. My 89 has been my tow truck and it worked good for the job. Cleaning out the shed I got my old 5518 honda tractor going (deck was shot) so it's getting turned into my new tow truck.

This morning I hit the shop at a little after 5 again. Still slowly cleaning up so that I can hopefully get a frame in the shop and build it out. Broke down a 350D brake backing plate and got the old shoes off, cam lever freed up and pushed out, seals out, and bearings out. Have all of it soaking in the parts washer and will pack the bearings with fresh grease, install new seals, and new brake pads. Then I went down another rabbit hole. I have a couple of these old Warn 8274's that I've picked up in the last year, and after the amazing job @1080PowersportsPartsLLC did vapor honing a Jeep carb for me, I'm going to have him do the same to the housings on this old winch, but first I have to tear it down so the aluminum housings can be easily cleaned up. This one came off of a late 70's Chevy 1 ton wrecker. I'm pretty sure were I to hook it to a battery it would work perfectly fine, but I'm going to tear it down, clean it up, install new wires from motor to solenoid pack, and put new lower seals in the housing. Not sure what the guy had in the gear box, but the gears look great. Looks like a mixture of grease and oil/gear oil.

These are a little less... fish-eyed no gopro shots here It was after this picture that my son realized why I like my 700xx so much... Clearance baby! I zipped right through those ruts and he.. well let's just say he got to really test out those new skid plates

We've gotten quite a bit of riding in the last few days. I got my Ricochet skids installed on my 700xx and so I've finally got to really open it up. With all the rocks in the area I was nursing it through or just avoiding heavily rocky stuff all together to avoid any frame damage. My son also got skids for his raptor and we went out and had some fun! excuse the clarity, cameras were dirty and I took screenshots from the video... and when you see the cattle guards its really hard to not want to jump them..
