I doubt theres enough traffic to add an ATC section. But doesnt matter to me really.

it wouldn't hurt..as long as its a honda !..lol. i work on atcs all the time for my deer lease bud, he's nothing but atcs. plus..i doubt many on here know much about them like i do ?..maybe a few ?..i say let it rip, if there isn't much for them, remove the section.

It's a new starter old one was doing the same thing

was the rear cover removed for any work ?, its posb the starter is in a bind ?. maybe from a missing thrust washer ?, missing gasket ?. i have seen owners remove rear cover, use rtv sealant ( a no no ! ), pinch starter transfer gears.

2003 honda rincon 650 won't trun over with starter can't pull start too hard to pull sounds like I'm pulling against starter replace the cam it was bad and still can't get engine to start with starter but if you keep hitting the start button in will turn over sooner or later any ideas it did it before I change the cam thought it was decompression vales but I'm stuck now

could be a bad starter ?. the brushes do wear out.

Shade I think what you’re seeing are just enlarged  reflections of the top of the Allen head bolts in the shiny oil on the inside edge of the flywheel-  it looks like a gouge, but it’s just a reflection

yep..we covered that over the phone..your are right.

  6. as for parts ?, your best bet is power sports nation for used parts, or..an atv salvage yard. as most parts for that old girl will be discontinued today. now, you can find after market parts..which all will be made in china ?..but honda atvs hate china parts on them !.

Brand new member, in more ways than one.
Hello and happy Easter from Otterbien, Indiana.
Age and health issues prompted me to buy a cheap atv I figured I could fix up a tad. Getting too old to drag a deer out of the woods, so bought an old 1984 Honda trx200.
I have NEVER tinkered with an ATV of any type, so expected this to be a learning experience....oy vey.
The dude got it fired up, drove it around a bit, and fed me a crock, and since it ran I bought it. Hook, line and sinker.
All I wanted was something that would start, run and save me from a heart attack.
And it had brand new tires all the way around. Said his grandpa bought it new and he just didn't have the time to fix it....
Said it needed brake cables, master cylinder, battery and a new carb. OK, I figured I could deal with that.
Carb was leaking gas pretty bad out the bottom of the carb, but it ran so I took his word for it.
Ordered a carb, and it leaks even worse than the old one. Old one wasn't oem either, I discovered. And it now it won't start, period.
Cables were the least of the brake problems. The ENTIRE front brake system will have to be replaced to work. Master cylinder, hoses, wheel cylinders, adjusters, shoes and possibly drums. Rear brakes cannot be fixed without a drum, as when I pulled the back cover off, there was nothing left inside but pieces of the old drum. Drum was totally destroyed. Can't believe I didn't hear parts rattling around when he was driving it.
The more I look, the more parts I find missing, or replaced with jury rigged garbage, and the more I am convinced every kid in Indiana has tried to fix it before me...lol
ANYway....lesson learned. My question is what is up with the carb issues?
Fuel just pours out of the drain hose on the bottom of the carb. On both carbs. Choke wasn't even hooked up on the old carb.
This can't be normal. And my knowledge of small engines is just slightly greater than my knowledge of Honda or ATV's, which is zero.
Tried looking online, and that led me here.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
As it stands, I have a brand new set of tires on a boat anchor.....
    John

float needle is bad, but then again...so is the china carb that is on it !..lol. if you can find an oem carb ?..get it !..then get your hands on a shindy carb rebuild kit..MAKE SURE ITS A SHINDY KIT !!..alot of scammers on ebay and stay away from amazon !.

So all 6 Allen's are tight. They didn't move with my battery impact. I do not see a key anywhere tho. I see the groove for it, but it looks like it spun

in this pic...right at 3 o'clock, and 1 o'clock, i see two chunks ripped open inside the flywheel !!. unless i am seeing things ?..this is a very huge problem with not getting spark at the sparkplug. also..if you sheered the flywheel key ?,means the flywheel is out of time, and looking at this damage on the inside of the flywheel ^^..tells me this is what happened.

am i seeing a large gash in the inside of the flywheel ^^ ??..if so ?..wow !..lol.

What is cause of the gouges on the fly wheel ? must be loose metal some where

i noticed that as well ?..that is why i asked him to check the flywheel to one-way starter clutch allen head bolts ?..something tells me that flywheel is loose, and hit the stator from seeing those marks !.

I will check those Allen's when I get home. I will look at that key as well. When I go to put the unit back together I will ask you again about the alignment. I'm not to sure I follow but once I look at the engine it may make more sense

in the pic of the stator ( bottom pic ). that switch that sticks up ?..that is your gear position switch, it tells you on the dash what gear you are in..or when in neutral or reverse ?. see that rolled pin that looks like a TEE ? , the longer end of it faces/sits over the letter N that is stamped on top of the plastic switch right below it when its centered over the letter N.

Lol if you have the time you can watch the camera footage from the farm. The only water it sees is the rain or snow driving from barn to barn. I changed the oil in February. It looks like this every time I change it. A minimum of 2 times a year. It had looked like this since I started maintaining it in 2014

sooo..is this a bet ??..lol. i know milky oil when i see it, oil is not that color that is in your pic. all atv engine oil turns black over time...that oil looks white too me ?, and this tells me its got water in it. as it was pointed out from AKATV ^^, there is water drops on the starter gear !. another sign of water mixed with the oil. i'll stake my rep on this...right along with that 100 bucks !..lol. i know what engine oil looks like when it has water in it, 30 plus yrs doing this has my back !..lol.

As far as the shifting goes, that's a problem for another day. It went to the dealer and they had it for 6 weeks and their answer was changing the pushbutton cluster on the bars and telling us it has a bad shift fork and that's why it jumps out of gear when you give it gas in 2nd. I don't recall exactly how much but I think it was $1100-$1200 they charged him for repairing nothing and saying parts weren't available. That's why they just run it in 1st since they have to go slow to push feed anyway.

jumping out of gear can be anything from the shift motor not doing a full shift ?..all the way down to a bad shift drum or shift forks, bad gear dogs on one of the gears  ?. and this means a total engine tear down.

I've never been inside of one these engines but the rotor sitting in oil seems a bit strange. Regardless, it's off. Would it be beneficial to clean the alternator assembly up or just wipe it off and reinstall it ?

do me a favor, have a look at those allen bolt heads, and see if they are tight ?, in this pic ^^..they don't look like they are all the way down ??. while your at it, check to see if the flywheel has sheered the wooddruf key ?, if it has ?, then this is a big problem for the timing...also as to why it ain't sparking !. when ya go to install the stator cover back on ?, MAKE SURE YOU ALIGN THE NEUTRAL SWITCH WITH THE LONGER END OF THE ROLL PIN FACING/OVER THE LETTER N BEFORE YOU GO TO INSTALL COVER !. this is very important !!!. that tang sits inside the shift drum slot on the end of the shift drum.

I agree. It's always this milky and they don't wash anything on the farm lol. I will ohm it shortly but I didn't see anything listed for a value in the manual. Is the generator sitting in an oil bath normal then?

no way in heck has this engine oil not got water in it !!..thats milky from water getting into it. i've worked on these for over 30 yrs, you can not tell me that oil is normal !..lol.

Looking at the service manual, that spark generator looks like a bit of a pain to change... possibly pull the motor and then I'll need a special fly wheel holder it looks like? Has anyone ever done that job?

no, you do not need to pull the motor, no, you do not need a spec tool to pull the flywheel, flywheel stays on. all you are doing is removing the rear engine cover, which has the stator and pick up coil attached to it.
