So as I sit here and ponder things, I can't help but wonder if the ICM/CDI. Box is damaged from having the wrong regulator installed first? I know things can be junk new in the package but it just seems odd. Also having tapped on it then getting it to spark makes me wonder if it's worth swapping it out again. I contacted RMATV and they are having their tech dept reach out to trouble shoot that part before they send a new one out. I'm almost ready to throw in thr towel

all things aside, its either going to be something to do with the stator/pick up coil ?, or the c.d.i. ?.

So the oven trick didn't work. And tapping on the new one doesn't do anything either. I could never actually see spark at the plug only in my tester. I'm still wondering if it's the ignition pulse generator since the voltage values were so low. EVERYTHING that's been bought for this with the exception of the coil. Is OEM Honda. Not saying that there's never been a new electronic part bad out of the box but they were sealed when I received them.

i can't make out the part numbers on that c.d.i. bag ?, what does it read ?.

Well the new one would only flash when I hit it. The old one didn't flash at all. Stand by, I'm getting my apron and chefs hat on

this tells me your c.d.i. is the problem. old c.d.i. is bad. sounds like this '' new '' c.d.i. is a after market c.d.i. ?..when you purchased it, were you sure it was for the correct year, make, model for what you have ?. anytime you get a intermittent spark ?..this is a dead give away that the c.d.i. is bad. for the record, the c.d.i. is the ignition control module.

Welcome aboard.  Is it smoking?  Have you tried upping the idle a bit with the knob on the bottom of the carb?

And check and make sure your stator is charging with the machine running.    Use a multimeter and make sure you are charging.  If not, you might have a bad regulator.

i just have to ask !..what good is it if its smoking when making top end noise ?, why does it matter if its charging or not when it has top end noise ?..please wizard..tell me !..lol.

So I'm following this step in the manual currently. I don't have continuity from any of these 3 at the 5 pin connector back to the ICM yellow to the generator side. I do have continuity between 1 of the yellows on the harness side to the ICM yellow tho

    20240328_213240.jpg

here's an easy way to test stator..first..toss that manual for now..lol. unplug the stator from wire harness, with multimeter set to ohms, probe two yellow wire connectors on stator side, then move one probe to the next yellow connector on stator side ( plug )..do all 3, your looking for anything around 7 ohms, no more than 9, then leave red lead in each yellow wire connector, then probe black lead to case.engine..you should have zero numbers on meter. be sure to move red probe to all 3 wires on stator plug side while grounding black probe.  if you have any numbers at all when doing this ?..then stator has a open circuit.

I hav put 2 new plugs on it. I have not Ahmed the stator. I'm currently checking the yellow wire between generator and the icm

you need to just ohm the stator with a multimeter. and where did you get the left switch from that you said you replaced 6 months ago ?..plz don't tell me amazon !.

Ok so the correct regulator is now installed. I cranked it over and no spark still. I swapped out the coils and ot made no difference. Now I'm back to head scratching

try putting old c.d.i. back in. check for kill switch not centered ?, make sure neutral light is lit on dash ?.

I have a 2000 Honda foreman 450s 4w4. When I start it up with the choke on its fine but when I take it off it will idle then make clunking noise like the piston is slapping the jug when goes up then it will act like it's going to die. Sometimes it will and when it does my battery doesn't have enough power to turn the 4wheeler back over. I just got a battery tender fix that problem. Can anyone tell me what is going on please.

with it being 24 yrs old ?, its hard to narrow your issue down. the piston, or bore can be worn ?, the connecting rod can have play in it ?. wrist pin top at rod can be worn out ?, valves can be out of adjustment ?. really hard to tell you what it can be. the only way you will find out, is too tear the top end down, and inspect the piston, bore, valves, rings, connecting rod. BEFORE you tear it down !!. make sure to have a top end gasket kit, and a tube of yamabond or hondabond on hand !...DO NOT USE RTV SEALANT ANYWHERE ON THIS ENGINE !!!. i'll go out on a limb here, and say your piston, jug, connecting rod is worn out..one of these..or all 3 need to be fixed.

Thanks for the links, those are much better prices. I like the concept of the 424, but I can appreciate the simplicity of full time 4x4. I can also appreciate the clean looks of the 400AT route. Decisions decisions. Maybe one day I’ll actually ride the thing more than I work on it.

maybe one day you will hit your state lottery too huh ?..lol.

Yea that would. The old registration from 2006 was listed as an 01.... glad the vin cleared that up. I will order another regulator and see what I can do. At least the ICM is the same on the 03 as well. I'm hoping that's the fix. Thank you

i hope it does...keep us posted on what happens !.

These are both pictures out of the factory service manual. I can try to see if there's a frame serial number on here but i have no idea if that would do me any good. Is there any other way to find it?

in the front, very middle of frame, under front fender, is a flat steel plate, this is where the vin# is stamped, 17 digits, from left to right, see what the 10th digit is ?. more that likely the plate is under that winch !.

I did go out and put the original coil back on but left the new oem icm and reg on and still no spark. I don't know what else I can do until the peak voltage adapter shows up.

i looked up a 2002 trx450FE, and the reg/rec is square, are you sure this atv is a 2001 trx450es ??. this is very important !. reason: the yr models changed with the last prefix letters on the model number. the '01 is called trx450ES, and the 2002 is called trx450FE, even both are the same design by being 4x4 ?, the eletronics may have changed, hense why you got a odd shaped reg/rec, where the old reg/rec is square.

As far as I know it's honda. It came in a Honda oem bag and i ordered it from rocky mountain atv on the oem page. I'm tempted to swap out the coil and put the old one back on instead of the new China one I got from RMATV. But the ICM and Reg are both factory honda parts

if you got it frm rmatv ?, then chances are its oem from honda. i was saying anything you buy from amazon is china.

You sure you got the part number right?  Partzilla shows -600 for that model.

I know the Foreman bulbs from that era were Honda specific and no aftermarket bulbs were available.   That -600 Rancher bulb looks like a Honda-only bulb to me.

601 replaces the 600 going by rocky mountain atv. non in stock, prob discontinued.

So the bigger one is the original one to the atv since I've worked on it in the last 12 years. It may have been changed out prior but the new one is OEM honda

i looked your yr/model up, that is the correct reg/rec. but if you got it from amazon ?..then its china junk..china parts don't like honda atvs..lol.

    Hey there,

Newbie to this page but not Hondas. I have a foreman 4x4 es that is in my shop my buddy was having trouble with. It would start and run fine then die and not restart until some time would pass. He brought it over and it fired up and idle then died after about 10 min. It wouldn't restart. I pulled it inside and still no start. I pulled the plug and it had fuel. Put a new plug on and grounded it to check spark and it had none. Since they use this machine 3 times a day to push feed up he said to get it up asap. I saw regulators were a common issue on these and this unit had a factory one so I changed it out along with a coil and ICM. I put a new plug in and those parts and I still have no spark. I need to get a peak voltage adapter for my meter to test but is there anywhere else I can check and troubleshoot further? I didn't see any bad wiring anywhere or obvious issues. I'm starting to wonder if it's in the alternator brushes not having any output. Also I noticed the regulators are quite different in appearance. I uploaded a pic of them side by side. Also the machine is tore down so any ideas are appreciated as now is a great time to trace out wiring. Thanks everyone

I’ve already tested the fan with a battery and it works, I just realized the the fan fuse was blown so replaced it now every time I turn the key fan turns on, and I’m pretty sure the fan control is bad but no ideas where to get a replacement for it. But yes I got everything off amazon honestly. I do believe I still have the original cdi box.
Hey guys I have a 1988 Honda foreman 350d I was on here while ago seeking help for my cooling fan not turning on. But now I have a different issue I lost my spark, I’ve replaced the cdi box twice now I’ve replace the ignition coil, ive replaced the stator, when I replaced the stator which also came with a new voltage regulator and got spark then got everything back together and then went to start and lost spark again unplugged the cdi box and plugged it back in and got spark again for a sec then no spark also when turning the key the neutral light comes on but the oil temp light comes on then goes off I forget if that’s normal or not but I’m at a loss of what could be the issue anyone have any ideas to help me out ? Would be greatly appreciated lol

salvage atv yard, such as power sports nation may have a fan control unit ?. as for amazon parts ?..they are nothing but china junk...PURE JUNK !!. do not waste your money and time with them. if the fan comes on when the key is on ?, then either the fan control unit is bad ?, or they wired the fan to come on all the time when key is on ?. deff should replace the fan control unit and oil temp sensor. the oil temp sensor controls the fan control unit. start by replacing the oil temp sensor. bottom right hand side, behind the metal plate. you can lift the right side up a good ways, and be able to get the sensor out without having to drain the oil. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE SENSOR WHILE ATV IS SITTING FLAT !!, YOU WILL HAVE A OIL MESS FAST !..LOL. pay attention to the sealing washer that must be on the oil temp sensor when replacing sensor.

first off, the fan must get REALLY HOT before it kicks on. if it will not come on at all ?, this either means the fan control unit is bad ?, or the oil temp sensor is bad ?. or...the fan itself is bad ?. you  can test the fan by hooking a 12 volt battery straight to the fan to see if it runs ?. as for the oil light coming on, then going off ?, this is how they work. as for the c.d.i. where did you buy a c.d.i. for it ?, as they are discontinued today, so this tells me you got it from ebay or amazon, and both are chINA junk for one, and for two, most sellers have no clue what they are selling you, cuz they will '' claim '' it works on all years from '86-'89...AND THEY DON'T !. '' most '' trx350D's won't fire the spark plug if the fan control stops working. sooo..you need to sort out the fan control first before you go chasing a spark issue. hopefully you still have the old c.d.i. that you removed from it ?.
