Hi, this is the first time I’ve ever been on a forum. Not sure what I’m doing. I have an issue with my 2000 foreman 450 the speedometer has been in the sun and it is washed out. I noticed that AKATV has had a lot of success, repairing these, and would like to contact him.

I have had an infrequent problem of not being able to shift back into neutral after a hard stop such as “bumping it home” in the trailer (not slamming) or braking hard to a stop. It doesn’t do it all the time and most times I can rock it or shift back up and the down and get it back into N. It shifts up & down fine while moving. Back during the summer I followed the ESM maintenance tutorial posted here and the only thing I did not do was take the shift motor apart and service the brushes. With a month left in deer season I don’t want to take it apart if I can help it but I was wondering what might be the culprit. Shift motor? Sensor? Love this forum BTW!

i would start with a clutch adjustment.

I have a 2006 rancher 350 ES. The engine and all is in good shape, but someone evidently let the machine sit outside a lot. Anyway, the LCD on the gauge cluster is broken and the cover piece is also broke out. The backlight works fine, but the screen is destroyed. I was looking for a replacement, but can't afford the price they are commanding. I got to looking at universal replacements and ran across one on Amazon for another ATV maker I never heard of. It looks very similar and I thought it may be a suitable substitute. It's listed as a Ja-All unit for Linhai brand ATVs. I'll try to upload pics. The main obstacle is to figure out the wiring in the original unit and which wires may correspond to this one.

I wondered if I just missed them.  But I cleaned everything up by hand and I figured they would have come off it.  The pinion did show some pretty good wear compared to the ring. And it's got some play before I feel the the teeth engage. So I'll probably grab some shims and try shimming it into the pinion a bit more.  It's pretty loud when just spinning it by hand with the wheels up.

Anyone buy any of those non OEM replacement rear diffs? Most of them around 250$.

i normally just buy the ring gear and pinion gear if its still being sold from honda.

  5. as akatv ^^^ posted, yeah..those spacers on the ring gear are very easy to miss/over look !. most times in my work, they either stick to the ring gear ?, or stick to the bearings ?..most on ring gears. as for which ones you will need ?, well..this is an open and close case !. all depends on how much wear you have on the pinion gear and ring gear teeth ?. i normally just re-use the spacer washers that are on the differentials as i put them back together. if i have to buy new spacers ?, i just buy stock size, but i always have these spacers when i tear them down. '' if '' i tear one down, and someone '' miss-placed '' them ?..lol. i will round up some spares i keep on hand, do a dry fit. by this, i put the spacers on the ring gear, put it together, spin the pinion gear by hand, rocking it back and forth, i can feel/tell how much space i have before the two teeth hit each other ?, if i feel too much slack before the teeth '' hit '' ?, then i need to locate a thinner spacer washer...this is how i do it. yes.the book says to use a spec tool to '' dial '' in the back lash ( same thing as teeth space ) ?, but i go by feel.

top pic, i'm looking at the shift fork, and the gears the way they are lining up, something is off, its like the shift fork in installed upside down ?, the reason i say this is, because the gear teeth are not lining up, nor are they sitting even across the gears ?. makes me think the top shift fork is installed upside down ?.

a couple tips : MAKE SURE YOUR SHIFT FORKS ARE FACING THE CORRECT WAY WHEN INSTALLED ?. each shift fork has a letter stamped on it, bottom to top: RR, C, FF. meaning, the bottom shift fork will be the rear, c is for center, f is for front/.forward. each shift fork MUST have these letters facing up as you place them in the shift drum !. second tip: when placing shift drum into bottom case, its a good idea to have each grooves end line up from top to bottom, this is the stop end for each shift fork. it does not matter where you have the shift drum sitting once you place the shift forks in the case, and go to install the shift forks ?, but it does make it alot easier to line the shift forks up while placing the forks into the gears slots/grooves when doing so.

I’m talking about the bolt pattern on the brake backing plate where it attaches to the axle tube.  I have parts laying around the shop. Will try to see how a 350 D backing plate matches up to a 500 foreman axle tube.

I’m thinking that the rear brake conversion would work on a 300 if someone has done a 350D rear end swap

ahh..yeah...not sure about the bolt pattern on the axle tube to brake backing plate ?. i '' think '' they are the same ?, let us know !.

UPDATE   well I guess I am pretty proud of myself right now , with a lot of b--chen an swearing I got it in and it even works, put the air box in and everything is back together I think except the back rail and all the bolts that hold that down, I want to finish painting it before i reinstall it. I ran out of paint. The battery seems to be down , don't know why its been disconnected so I put it on the trickle charge for the night. We shall see what happens tomorrow . When I am ready I need to tackle that reverse issue.

Thank you for your moral support.

    keep us updated !.

Hmmmmm.  The 05-06 500TM uses the exact same rear end that the 05-11 Foreman 500 4x4, the 01-14 Rubicon, the 450 and 400 Foreman do.  That would be one exception, but not many of those were made.

That said, the 2wd 350 Ranchers were the same setup as well.

I think the bolt pattern on the 350A and 350D Fourtrax and Foreman was the same as the newer models.   Is that all that's really needed to make that rear brake kit work (the proper bolt pattern on the end of an axle tube out by the wheel)?

@Fishfiles I know you have a rear conversion on one of your 450's.  I know you have some BR250 rears in your 300's.  You have a 350D rear end in any of the 300's?

the bolt pattern is the same as most all of honda's today. think about this for a min: i used 2003 honda foreman 12 inch rims on a 1989 trx350D front end so i could use the high lifter brake kit, sooooooo...bottom line...the bolt pattern is the same from 1989 to 2003.

@jeepwm69 I changed the oil last fall.  I don’t really use it much except to plow and to occasionally pull a cart on hunting land.  I used GN4 10w-40 SJ and changed the filter.  I have not adjusted the clutches.

@ATC4everit revs okay.  It does seems like it’s slow, like it’s not sparking fast enough.  After changing the plug, I will check it and it seems fouled pretty quickly.  That’s why I tried doing more electrical.  It seems like it’s not sparking enough maybe.  It will choked under heavy load, like if it was pulling something heavier.

    @_Wilson_™

I feel likes it’s not sparking enough.  I do not have stuff to check compression, I imagine it has a decent amount because I can drive it down the road, shifting electronically just fine to 5th gear.

have a look at the choke enrichment valve, and choke cable. the enrichment valve may be stuck in the carb, and not re-seating back down like it should.

starter is frozen, I ordered from a dealer  after market they wanted 500 an change for the regular one , I asked if it had gold accents for that price LOL  any way waiting on the replacement . I just hope I can remember how to get it back together. I figured if I ordered locally I can take it back an stuff it up their butt if it doesn't work. I will test before I reassemble of course.

you could have went to D&B electrical and got a great starter for 1/3 the cost..but oh well..your money..lol.

Going to take it around the yard for a few laps today. Still need to work out the brakes and probably some front wheel bearings.

Anyone happen to have an air filter canister laying around? It would seem as though the whole filter got tossed out when this bike was taken apart. I got a new outer filter but can't find the metal inner part. I know I can buy a new one but hope someone here may had one from a parts bike they'd be willing to let go of.

Also need to source a new drain screw in the bottom of the carb. This one had some rust on the tip and it will not seal all the way. I put a small amount of hondabond on it to hold for now.

check on ebay for the air filter element, you can still buy them new, but be warned, they are not cheap !. they are pretty hard to come by used, i had one, but used it on my last 450 build. even the air box itself is discontinued, so do not damage yours !. as for the drain screw, sand down the tip at the correct angle, then use a o-ring on the end of it like it should have. just checked ebay for air filter element, save your time, they are asking over retail price for used !..go buy a new one from rocky mountain atv, for $ 79.30 for brand new !, and free shipping.

420 rear brake setup is the same as the 300.

My question is, would the rear disc setup work on an old 350D Foreman rear end, which you could then swap into a 300.

@SuperATV, any ideas on that one?

i can answer this...no..it will not work. why ?, the rims on the trx350D foreman are 11 inch rims, and also deep dished, i highly doubt the rims will clear the brake kit. now..you can go to 12 inch foreman rims ( 450 foreman ), and make it work. i converted my front brakes on my '89 trx350D foreman to high lifter disk brakes, but i had to make some special brackets to fit the brake kit on it. and i also used 12 inch rims for a 450 foreman both front and rear. i had to re-adjust the foot guards to make room for the 12 inch itp mudlites, was easy though.

There's a lot of side by side riding where I live. Not much in the way of ATVs anymore. And 14s are all over marketplace. Alot of factory take offs too that have zero use on them that the seller is just trying to get rid of for far less than the tires would have been new.

sxs are not talked about alot here, most here have atv's. sxs's are a whole diff world when it comes to tires.

Would like to get a set of 14"s actually.  There's a ton of selection on tires in that size where I live.

i try not to get into tire selection here on the forums, why ?..because everyone has their tire they like. myself..i run nothing but stock sizes for my toys, or builds ?. just a heads up: if you go to 14's ?, be ready to spend lots of cash keeping this atv rolling right !. large tires, rims..do damage to the drive line fast !. you have been warned !!. i run ITP at's mudlites on my 450, and it will go through anything i drive through, and i do not go in deep mud..or lakes !..lol.

No. I got it from partzilla. It's boxed up ready to send back. I don't buy stuff off Amazon.  I did buy a used gear selector switch off ebay.  But there's no aftermarket on those. I don't waste my time on aftermarket parts. They just don't last. I do have a Honda shop 30 miles from me in North Little Rock. Tried there to find the parts but they didn't have the cdi in stocks. And they haven't had a switch since 2012.

north little rock ??..i'm in north little rock !..lol. give me a holler one of these decades..we'll hook up before i die..rofl.
