Well we know the right way to do it.  Split cases, clean out, reassemble.

Since I keep an extra engine on the shelf ready to go, I just drain/fill and ride it till it smokes, then swap the other engine in.

and in the time it takes you to do all that ^^ ?, i can split my engine, clean it out, install it ONCE !..ROFL. you dang green horns never listen eh ?..rofl.

@AKATV you are spot on. His fan was locked up too. Not to mention he had a bit of sludge in the bottom of motor when I pulled it apart. I still have the old cylinder so I guess boring it is still an option if this one doesn't hold up.
Yes I took the pic of the display before fixing the neutral light issue. I have a John Deere tractor with pallet forks. I use it to put the bike on the table. It makes working on them so much better. Small step stool to get to the top parts everything else in easily reached and eye level.
I got your PM and will contact you about that and possibly the display on my rancher at the same time. No rush on them so if you are busy they can wait.

please make sure you check the connecting rod BEFORE you go putting a top end back on it ?!!!. time after time, atv owners toss top ends on an engine, failing to inspect the rod for any side to side, or up and down play ?, if this is the case ?, you MUST replace the connecting rod,or the whole crank. be sure to replace the crank bearings !!!.

Wellll, that depends on the water.  If he sank it in clear clean water, might get by with it, but if you want to do it RIGHT then splitting cases is the only way to go.

I've seen a few sunk in clear water that have run fine for years after simply draining and refilling with clean oil until the oil stays clear (my 06 was sunk twice over the last 4-5 years, and I didn't split cases and it was fine).

But, since his engine starts up, runs at idle and will rev up fine in Neutral, but then dies the minute he puts it in gear, that sounds more electrical than mechanical to me.   The oil pump that drives the Hondamatic pumps oil whether in neutral or gear.

Not necessarily.  Top end problems will be smoking or not starting/ running properly.   Your engine appears to RUN fine.   You MIGHT have something off in the bottom end though, that will require tearing down the entire engine.  See pics in the link above to see what that would involve.

word from the wise: there is no such thing as clear water !..lol.

Only if you get a suppressor.   And if you're NOT planning on a suppressor, the 300BLK is kind of a wasted round.

Suppressor is $200 "tax stamp" along with a year wait (more or less) and an extensive background check.  I held onto hope for years that the "hearing protection act" would pass, but finally gave up and rendered unto Caesar and got a can.

A 22LR suppressor is fun for me, the wife, and kids to shoot.  Centerfire suppressors (like a 30 cal for 300BLK) are expensive, require expensive subsonic ammo, and have a very limited range.

I'd skip the 300blk, get you a 5.56, and call it a day.

    yep..already picked up 150 rds of 5.56..lol.

He has those 01-04 with the 450ish looking fenders, with the full time 4wd and drum brakes, and the crappy oil pumps that killed the Hondamatics.

The 05-14 Rubicons and the 05-11 Foremans shared bumpers, racks, fenders, rear ends, front ends, brakes, etc.   I've tried to hoard parts for those as I can use them on either model.

The early Rubicons that run are becoming more rare by the day.  He might have some $$$ out of those if he holds onto them long enough.

he does not work on them any more...he has not touched an atv is some time, he tinkers with them here an there...but never works on them like i do.

Yep, it's in a barn shop so that's logical.

Has a good strong green neutral light and N showing on the dash.  I was hoping melatv's "jumper wire from battery + to coil" trick would work but it didn't.

yeah..inspect for mice damage, and spray some wd-40 into the kill switch. if you have a neutral light, then i would do a good check at reg/rec, as well as the stator harness area for mice damage.

Lot of Honda parts are being discontinued.  I've had two backorders cancelled in the last month or two because the parts are no longer being made.

One was a left tank cover for an 08 Foreman 500FM, and the other was a front bumper for the same.

Really sucks too, because I had a 15% off coupon on that front bumper, so it was $173ish for a new one (free shipping).  That order was placed in June.  The tank cover was placed a year ago.

Neither the black nor the silver bumpers for the 05-11 Foreman and the 05-14 Rubicons are even able to put on backorder now.  Apparently the silver is discontinued, and black is "currently unavailable" so who knows if they'll become available again.

you might wanna give ole catfish a call, he still has those rubi auto's, ele shifts in his pastor..lol. be warned though, last i spoke to him, he wanted to sell the whole atv...not part them out.

Welp, I've made tentative plans to pick this one up Friday to see if I can figure it out.  I could sure use any input yall might have on this thing.  I've gotten away from the EFI machines because they have so much electrical stuff on them, but this thing is super clean and I'm hoping it won't be a PITA to find out why it doesn't have spark.

First thing I gotta do is get the battery charged up.  It would slowly turn over when I stopped to troubleshoot last week, but I hooked cables to it and it still wouldn't start, so obviously has some issue other than the battery.

i would start with inspecting all of the wire harness for any chewed damage from mice !.

So the only option is to buy a new speedometer?  And how can I look for it locally, how to distinguish which one it really must have, some part number or serial number

    @AKATV

    @shadetree

i just checked with rocky mountain atv, they look to be discontinued. your only option is used at this point. all i have is used fm used meters for manual shifts, these won't work on the es models. i did a quick search on ebay, did not see any used speedo's for your model.

Ok, was thinking about calling my local Honda dealer to see if they had an updated part #. I was looking for a bearing or oil seal for a different rancher a few weeks ago and the dealer said part # so and so superseded the # I gave him.

I had already looked at power sports and rocky mountain atv with no luck.

when i need a part ?, i do a google search, most times it points to partzilla, i can't stand partzilla any more because of their prices..lol. i will look at all places that '' may '' have it by going to the site. rocky mountain atv is my first place, if they do not have it ?, then ebay, then right on down the list of places that show the part number. keep in mind, some models swap over to other models, even if the model and year changes ?. this is a good thing to know !.

I appreciate that advice. I will try that;however, lately it's doing it from first to neutral occasionally. . It has been doing this on and off for a couple years but always only into reverse. Could the shifter control be funky maybe a cleaning? I found this for 20 bucks. Thank you all!!! I will update you shadetree this weekend and let you know if that worked.  Thanks shade!

Appreciate you looking for me. I have found a couple on ebay but they are for 13 and newer models. But they look the same as mine.

i copied the part number, pasted it in google search..found that one ^^^ just now. it must be for year, make, model, but sometimes same part swaps to diff yrs. but the part number ( my way ) must match.

  14. gear position switch is discontuinued, ebay or power sports nation is your only hope. pretty sure i do not have a spare..but i'll check around later when i get a chance, got alot going on right now trying to get ready for deer hunting here in arkansas.

In fact, I found a joint in the harness🤬🤬, you were right, apparently it is not its original speedometer but some time ago it did work, how strange.  Furthermore, it also has both voltages with the same ground and nothing works except the backlight, so practically nothing can be done, right?  About shipping it, I'm not from the US, shipping would probably be more expensive than the speedometer itself 😅😅

    The text says "HONDA CASE>ABS< LENS>PC<" IMG_20231106_182433.jpg

look over on powersports nation, see if they have the correct used meter, and they ship to you ?.

have to push the es downshift button HARD only in reverse occasionally, or it does not shift. could this be a button issue? possibly dirty? anyone have any ideas?? thanks-

    PS- battery is full.

first thing you need to check: have a look at the reverse cable, make sure its adjusted right in order to pull the reverse lever back far enough. this lever is located on the very bottom, back end of engine. to adjust the cable, there is a 10mm jam nut on the reverse cable on left handle bars, it also has a longish 10mm long. loosen the jam nut, unscrew the long part, then  tighten the jam nut back up against the long screw. then see if your reverse goes into reverse any easier ?.

OK, I have knocked out every connection with the above requirement. I have purchased a OEM CDI, I have purchased a OEM starter solenoid and replaced. I have purchase a OEM ignition switch, I have checked every fuse, cleaned all of the in and out puts. I have verified there is powere going to the ignition switch. The fan comes on when the key turned on. When I put the bike in reverse, the reverse light come on. That tells me that my neutral/reverse switch is working. I think I am down to testing the stator or the pulse generator. Thoughts?

until you get the neutral light to light up on the dash ?, you will never get it to fire the spark plug !.

The part you need is 30410-HN2-003.   You might see if @shadetree's buddy still has the old Rubicons that he tried to rebuild (think they had bad transmissions).  He might sell an ECU off of one of them.

I would do a little more checking before I bought a new ECU though.  I've had Hondas say "replace ECU" in the manual only to find that it was a loose connection somewhere, so the new ECU I bought didn't fix the problem, and of course, they won't allow electrical parts to be returned so you get stuck with a $$$ part that didn't fix your problem.

I normally buy used parts from powersportsnation.com.  They aren't exactly cheap anymore, but they do stand behind what they sell, including electrical stuff.   They don't have one in stock at the moment though.

Motosport.com has a new one at $256.  That's the cheapest new one I could find.

i gave up on those elec shift junk, lol. they would not shift to save my life. this is the very reason i do not work on ele shifts..spec auto's !..lol. i did get the engines to run , but they would not shift, so that told me to wash my hands of them. motor wise..they were good..tranny wise ?..JUNK !..LOL.

    Hi Shade

I wasn’t sure on your comment on this regarding the LED lights but the reason I had previously posted the incorrect model was because the Rancher 350 ES 2WD and Foreman 450S models have four corner mounting screws on backplate/ circuit card as well as 3 LEDS

The other electronic shift models for both Rancher 350 ES 4x4 and Foreman 450ES have 8 back plate mounting screws regardless of whether they have three or four LEDs (for the 450)

    -AKATV

hi ya akatv, i was pointing out, the early version trx450fe does not have a 4x4 light on the dash, because its full time 4x4. i do not recall if they had speedo and gear position on them back then ?, seems like my memory is gettng worse !..lol. what i do know for a fact is: from 1998 to 2001, all trx450's from ele shift to manual shift , none of them had the eletronic front 4x4 on them, as all of them were full time four wheel drive. seems like the electric shifts had the speedo sensor in the back too ?, unlike the 2002-2004 models when they moved them to the front diff's, come to think of it..there are 2 speedo sensors on the fronr dff's on the later models. also, the later model trx450fm does not have gear position showing on the dash. most of the trx450's are '' almost '' the same ?, but they changed a few things here and there.
