  1. When my kids were younger it was difficult to get out on my own as someone always had something going on, so understood. All my kids are either finishing college or on their own, so I can do the things I want to do.
  2. Where I will spend some regular time used to be off-road vehicles like you have in your photo. My brother and his buddies, and others, used to be all over that place. Fast forward 25 years and those trails are overgrown and forgotten. Bonus! Since they are legal to ride, I'll slowly clear a path and enjoy the solitude.
  3. I watch a few youtube channels where people use crown land, and it seems awesome.
  4. You did the right thing, @Wheeler. And you are right, there is a difference in taking one from a stand and what you had to do. I appreciate your humanity in that it bothered you for a bit. Go peacefully. I *salute you.
  5. That is true, it's a risk. I have two stories that involved people who intended to do harm. I'll save those for a campfire and some beverages. I've also went solo into Canada (canoe). That's a risk as well. I do prepare properly (in my mind) to minimize the risk, but it's still there regardless.
  6. @Fishfiles exactly! And rules are different depending on where you go, but what you posted is generally it. When I backpack into the area I will regularly atv into, I call the Ranger station and get the up to date info. It has, at times, changed what I did.
  7. HA! Thanks for making me feel good. I'll start a thread so that the next n00b that comes in can learn from the fact I need a wrench-by-wrench hand-holding.
  8. One of the reasons I bought my atv is to go dispersed camping. I want to drive somewhere, take my atv off the trailer, and go down forestry, logging, etc. roads and find a place to camp. If it's by water, all the better! I'm looking in the states around me and finding their opportunities to do this. It's all over in Canada, and I'll go there in time, but I also want to do this on long weekends. I also know some places that already go (backpacking) that have multi vehicle use roads that are overgrown. I've found them on the map and contacted the local ranger station. I'm free to go there. For those places, if I feel it is very low use, I'll go there repeatedly and use downed trees to build a small shelter. I used to do that before I raised a family and I want to do it again. Imagine having a little shelter, a chair you made yourself, a table, and a fire while relaxing near a creek, river, or lake? Riding a distance is away from people is, of course, different than camping at an atv park and riding the trails. What you take for a trail kit is different. Fuel, maps, etc. are all now of more importance. I'm looking at rear rack containers to be able to handle the base camp type outings where I'll build a shelter as well as just a simple drive down a trail and camp adventure. I know I could start with some duffel bags with a waterproof liner, so it's not critical I get something like a Plano trunk or the like. I'm a backpacker, so I'll be able to translate what I do there to the atv. I already am conscious of weight, though I know I'll bring extra since I have the atv. Any of you camp off your atv? Got any setups you would like to share? Any spots you want to tell us about?
  9. Yes I did ask it that way, didn't I? I appreciate you responding. Thanks.
  10. Thanks. When I bought mine at the dealership they say "They fixed the issues" so I didn't want to take things apart if I didn't have to. I've never done this type of work so I don't want to get in there and screw things up. I appreciate you taking the time to make this and other threads, and to respond to my question. I'll get the things needed and dive in and get it done. I'll choose a time when I have a few weeks before I ride in case I get in there and something goes wrong, whatever that could be.
  11. I read that, but I'm basically asking if Honda changed their ways on the new models. If this process is taking care of inadequate assembly (or whatever) procedures, have they taken care of it?
  12. Does anybody know if what retro has laid out is still needed for the new machines? It's not that I'm trying to avoid this, but that's EXACTLY what I'm doing, if I don't need to do it. If it IS still an issue, I'll certainly follow through this thread and get it done.
  13. Agreed. I know some places I go I'll be leaving my atv by itself, due to the nature of what I'll be doing. I've got some ideas of what I'll do to make it "less seen" and a bit harder to steal, but I'd hate to have not done my due diligence and made it too easy.
  14. Not what I did to my ATV but what I did to maintain it. Today I went and picked up some tools. Impact sockets for the impact wrench that is on it's way, some wrenches and various plier type implements (cutters, needle-nosed, etc). Most of these items I already had but was starting to miss a size here or there. I took advantage of some sales and made some purchases. This will also allow me to make a toolbox to keep in my vehicle when I go riding.

  16. Not sure what there is to be "done" with. It's a profile of a person I know that had been faked, and I accepted the request.
  17. It was easy. If they would have kept going I could have just ignored them. Also I unfriended the fake account, so that stopped the messages. And really, they are looking to make the scam work with minimal effort, so they are not going to keep going past a certain point. THIS scam, anyways.
  18. If you can't prove it, call the police. Maybe this person has priors and they would be willing to his place an look around. You may not get your stuff, but possibly, if he is the thief, they could cause him some trouble.
  19. That was clever thinking! Your example of the balsa plane let me figure out what you were talking about. Nice job!
  20. As it turns out .... I do keep a Garmin InReach with me on the week long trips. My wife finds comfort in being able to tell the insurance guy where my body is. It speeds up the legal process. "No body, no check!" - WM's Wife
