  1. update: had a chance to mess with this project, went and bought 4 qrts of honda oil from my dealer, got back home, put that in, rounded up choke cable ( new ), noticed i did not have the rubber boot that goes on the carb end of the cable ?, no biggie, engine still should crank and run. went to put my test fuel line on the carb to get some fuel into it from my trusty pump can, and then the carb fell off the repaired intake insulator boot i tried re-using, yeah, that did not end well..lol. pure junk, had to order a new one, and a few other new needed parts, taxes and all, was 88 bucks. i wanted to do a test fire on this engine ?, but now i can't ( yes..i know i could have squirted gas right into the intake on the head ) until i get the new intake boot insulator, so..for now..again i am on hold.
  2. the choke parts do not come in REAL shindy rebuild kits !.
  3. thanks !. i always do a ground up restoration when i take a project on. engine has been gone through completely, then a fresh coat of paint. i still got a very long way to go before its put up for sale ?, but i'm not in a hurry..lol.
  4. deff a crf..maybe a cfr125 or even a crf80 ?.the atv looks like a rancher, cuz they have slanted double tail lights.
  5. if you have the pilot screw installed right ?, read what the manual says from a lightly seated screw setting, back it out the correct turns. you do this by watching only ONE END of the slot in the screw, in other words, slot at top, 1/2 down, now at bottom where the slot was on other end. one full turn, slot makes a complete rotation , then back where it started.
  6. there is no screw on the side of carb near the idle screw, post a pic, so i can see it.
  7. who here thinks running an engine inside a closed building is a good idea ??..rofl.
  8. i just gotta ask !..rofl...why in the world would you tell him to use his finger in the exhaust port to check for soot/what not ??. now..mind ya..i've been doing atvs for 30 yrs now..and i've never used a finger in the exhaust port to see if an engine is running rich ?..NOT WHEN ALL YA HAVE TO DO IS LOOK AT THE EXHAUST COMING OUT THE MUFFLER !..LOL.
  9. update: been a min or two sense i had my hands on this project !. deer season kinda took first place..lol. anyway, had a chance to dabble on the carb this afternoon, got that all back together and installed on engine, then i quit for the time being.
  10. no..the piston ( most times ! ) never sticks...as it is not vacuum operated like newer carbs. it uses a lift cam arm to raise the slider as you push on the thumb throttle at the bars.
  11. air fuel mixture jet/screw, bottom front of carb, this is where you set your air to fuel mixture.
  12. and for the record ?, i went out to my '89 trx350D foreman 4x4, removed the flywheel center cap, put the tip of my finger on the flywheel bolt, slowly kicked her over..and just as i claimed , THE MOTOR ROTATES COUNTER CLOCKWISE !, i hate being right most of the time !..lol.
  13. very nice build, please keep everyone up to date on your restoration on this !.
  14. i just skimmed through this last few post, and i will toss my .02's in, and leave it at that ( and thanks to all that mentioned my skill on these old gals ! ). lets start off with the basic's of what takes place when you install the flywheel bolt into the end of the crank shall we ? :-). from the left side, you are installing the flywheel crank bolt..right ?, ok..your turning the flywheel bolt clockwise to tighten it..correct ?..great !, now..stop and think about this..if the flywheel turns clockwise as some of you and the manual says ?, DON'T YOU THINK IF THE FLYWHEEL WAS TURNING CLOCKWISE WHEN RUNNING...THAT THE FLYWHEEL BOLT WOULD BACK OUT WHEN RUNNING ?..AH HA !..NOW YOUR USING YOUR BRAIN CELLS !. simple physics here ppl..flywheel turns counter clockwise, so the flywheel bolt would '' self tighten '' when its running in counter clockwise rotatation !..YES..THE SERVICE MANUAL IS NOT 100% CORRECT !!.
  15. haha..all good, yes..i know honda put an s on the side cover ( no clue what the s stands for ? ), but in honda's eye's..they list it as a trx500fm. yes, all us top honda mechanics that made the other site what it ONCE was ?..are now here !. we built this site from members that take pride in what we do..and thats keep it simple ?, and make it a very helpful site !.
  16. for the record, that year model is not called trx500 foeman s, its correct model name is trx500fm, i say this, because honda does not use the letter s on this year model, if you look it up on say..partzilla.com ?, its listed as a 2006 trx500fm :-).
  17. these dont have that carb set up with the diaphragm..haven't we had this talk before ?..lol.
  18. spend the cash, buy a trx500fm ( manual shift ) with the 2wd-4wd electric switch out, and solid rear axle if they still make them ?. they are just like my '03 trx450fm, cept 50 more cc's. outstanding atv to say the least !. honda does/did ?..make the trx420fm in this version with the solid rear axle, but its not something they keep on the show room floor. one of the hunting guy's at our camp has one, he said he had honda build it.
  19. outstanding pip !!!..glad i could help you :-). another old girl raised from the dead !!.
  20. well, coming from a honda mechanic that has a foreman ( '89-'03 ), and has worked on just about all old school atvs ?..I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT !. the early trx420 ranchers ( spec the es modesl ! ) all seem to have tranny issues ?, or electric shift issues ?. they are pure junk !. do yourself a favor, stay with a manual shift model at all cost !. automatics, es models are junk, manual shift models are a tried and proven design, less parts that move/operate, means less cost to fix/replace when and if they break down !. but please..by all means..don't take my word for it ?, just have a look all out there on cl's, market place, the internet...and see for yourself..compare how many elec shifts, auto models are up for sale ?, then see how many manual shift models are up for sell ?, a dime to a dollar will show an tell you..YOU WONT SEE MANY MANUAL SHIFTS COMPARED TO AUTO'S AND ES MODELS !. sure..you will see/read that honda sells more es and auto models comared to manual shift models ?..BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIPS ARE TRYING TO PUSH THE SALES !..THEY WANT YOU TO TRY THIS NEW AN IMPROVED DESIGN !!..trust me..they are junk !. then again..don't take my word coming from a 30 yr honda mechanic ?..SEE FOR YOURSELF !..LOL.
