Good luck. I have some cousins going up on the Vermilion River where they have a cabin for opening weekend.

Well I got my front tires broke down. Truck and 2x6 with some wd40. @shadetree comes through again. The 589s actually came down with some gentle side to side tire turning in the truck.

Nice new saw you have there @slowindown. Gratz. I like stihl. I always envied my grandpa when he would come cut wood with his old farm boss... It always started right up and never hitched a beat. My dad for whatever reason never bought into them. He would just get the black Friday poulons and couple years later tried the wild thing. I think he even had a makita gas saw recently (Last 10 years). I think they were all menards specials. They would be nice for a couple years then the oilers would go out, then the handles would break, parts werent easy to find, carb always needed to be tinkered with and cleaned. And my experience with stihl is just the opposite. Every time i need to use my saw it has fired and been ready to go. I have a mom and pop stihl store in my hometown that's been there for 30 years and they're good folk. So i like spending my money there and they usually get me a 5% discount on a lot of things. One thing i will agree about with the new saws is their quality has gone down quite a bit along with other gimicky things like the chain tightener. If i bought new, i wouldn't touch their homeowners saws or farm saws. I'd go straight to the pro line and get a 261 or next step up. magnesium cases and chain cover and all sorts of other benefits to increase the longevity. I will say though, my MS290 is 17 years old and still rips.

Here's the thread that i kind of followed. https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=44550.0 you have to remove (at least on the stihl) limiter caps in the carb adjusters. Otherwise you can't add enough fuel. Then when i got the low RPM running decent, i turned the high side up to around 2 turns out. Then running at full throttle, i took fuel away until it just started to quit "gargling" on fuel. It was only about 1/3 a turn. At that point it was running excellent. Then to be sure, since there was no load on the saw, i turned up the high side fuel just a bit more... so i'm probably 1 3/4 turns out. It burps/gargles just a little when WOT and no load but with a load in a log it runs spot on. My spark plus right now after about 3 tanks is pretty black so it could be leaned out a bit.

Yeah the fronts are 589s..... glad i wasn't the only one to struggle with them.

Alright all you smart folks. what kind of contraptions are you using to break your own beads in the garage? I was not able to get mine broke down using a tire hammer, irons, bars, jack & straps.... The rust build up my tires have is not good between the beads and rims... I've seen the hinged contraptions with a long lever on the internets but wondering if any of you have a clever solution before I take them to the shop to be mounted. Sled

After reading into those kits a little more i'm skeptical as not one part in the kit is OEM. I'm sure it would work fine but i'd almost rather have a older saw with a scored engine in good cosmetic shape and just rebuild the top end. Sounds like the kits are packaged together when an order is placed to so there's typically missing parts as i'm sure it is someone walking around with a check list, throwing parts in a box. I'll just wait for a good deal elsewhere. On another note, i've been watching some of these guys videos. Pretty neat video here of them square filing a saw with performance gains.

No pun intended? I have a feeling i won't notice anything. I probably should have ordered new clutch parts since I'm in there but we'll do one step at a time. It isn't like it's hard to get the drum off. It cost $41 shipping included for a new drum and air filter. Figured it was time to get a new air cleaner since I turned the fuel up with the muffler mod.

Yeah i have a pair of thin leather gloves i wear for cutting and sharpening just in case I slip and drag a knuckle across a tooth. That's a testament for how sharp I like the teeth. Does that make me less of a lumberjack Wilson?!?!? 🙂

Here’s why I think it’s wore out. My chain was kind of sticking in my bar and was hard to spin by hand with a glove on. So I took the chain off to find the drive teeth had a lip wore in the bottom side around the “hook” of the drive tooth. I filed those burrs edges down and instantly got the chain to spin around the bar like new. So then I started to inspect the sprocket to find what I posted. My owners manual says to replace if there’s more than .2” of wear into the sprocket. I’m guessing mine is 3/16 to ,1/4” deep. New sprocket is on its way now.

Question for you all? Is this wore out?

I learned to ride atvs (atcs) on a 110 honda atc with the hi/low. I think i've told the story on here before how i didn't know it had high until one day i was messing with the chain and was like, HEY WHAT'S THIS DO! (dad's little secret) as a 11/12 year old. That was the day i rolled the thing over. I still can't tell you how it happened, just driving on the same loop i always did just a little faster and whoop, there i was eating dirt and the 110 running upside down. I was lucky and didn't hurt anything and gained a lot of respect for the machine. It was a sad day when the fuel line rotted through while my brother was riding it and started on fire in the woods. She melted down to a crisp. I was hauling 55 gallon drums of water up into the woods with the farmall A and wood trailer to put the small woods fire it started out. once again pretty lucky as it could have been worse. That might have been the hottest fire i remember being near. all that plastic and big balloons fueled by gas and paint. I believe the frame is still sitting at my parents place about 50ft from where she burned down.

i wasn't too far off then. My cousin was just saying that he was at a gun show and everything is going for about %20 more than they should be. People are buying older used guns for the same price as new just to avoid tax and registering them.... I guess. That's all we can think of.

I only conceal carry my S&W m&p shield .45 single stack. primary use is for when i'm in the woods while bow hunting or shady craigslist transactions lol.... it's still a little big for my liking but i want the knockdown because some day, i'll be face to face with a bear and i don't want a .22 in my hands. mine still holds 8 or 10 depending on the clip. I have some +2 clips.

Thank you... It works pretty good other than what i'd hope would last a weeks time, is lasting about 4 days when filled to the brim. ohh well. I like cutting wood, for now. Picked up another truck load of wood while out to the cabin today, brought it home, split and stacked as much as i could... i need to get more pallets. I have about 40' of pallets stacked with wood, half 5' tall and half 4' tall. I have another 2-3 cord of popple out at the cabin cut that i can split and bring home. But it's no oak so i might cut some of the downed oak I have out there.

Kind of an oddball caliper imo but other than that I’d say the scope used is probably worth 300 and the gun 1000-1200. I wouldn’t pay over 1500.

This is pretty tempting for me. They are asking $500 for it as is. I'm guessing it was a farm quad and didn't get a lot of love. I'll probably pass because it about 3 hours away but still tempting if you cuold have it for about $350

If he already changed the oil when he rebuilt the carb i doubt there's much residue left to further effect the clutch. I'd bet that changing the oil again will have little to no effect on the clutches. See if you can get the front fenders off and unbolt the oil cooler and tip the quad up on it's back rack. I did this myself with a cherry picker but a couple friends could help you. Then id assume you'd be able to pull the front cover off if it's anything like my 500. Then you can inspect the clutches and not lose your oil or make a big mess. Worked well for me when i had my clutch plates loose. Someone should correct me if I'm wrong about being able to pull the front cover off a 400 with it on the back rack. Inspection of the clutches at this point is something i would definitely do. sled
