  1. That one doesn't look too bad. Doesn't look like there's any need for a plunge cut on that one. I'd say he could make it fall exactly where he wants it to. I can usually read a tree pretty good but last year I had a big walnut with a very full top. It didn't want to fall like I wanted it to so I had to get some wedges and drive them in the cut in order to make it go down where I wanted it. I've been working on filling my barn back up and I'll be splitting that walnut as soon as it dries out a bit.
  2. This one is solid at the base. It still had a few green leaves on it last year. I'm sure some of the limbs up high could be in bad shape so I'll have to keep a watch out for them. It should make lots of good firewood.
  3. Be very careful with that one Fish. I've got a dead ash that's about 20" wide at waist height that I'll cut soon. I'm going to chain it and use a little pull pressure on it. I can always pull it more after making my cuts if needed. I'm going to notch it and then do a plunge cut close but not to the notch and then saw back over to the other side without the notch. I'll leave a small section of that for a trigger. I'll then cut the trigger from the outside. This is to reduce the chance of it barber chairing. I've done this before on leaners and it works very well. Watch out for falling dead limbs.
  4. Waverly Park is on Dixie. I've only been there twice and you have to cross over the tracks to get to it unless there's a back way in. You can get to Jefferson Memorial from National Turnpike and maybe New Cut Road over on the other side. My friend used to live in the last house on National Turnpike before you got to the brickyard. We used to ride down the tracks to go in the brickyard and then on over to Jefferson Memorial. It sounds like you may have been on the other side of the brickyard if you crossed under the Snyder. My son has ridden on the Ohio River levy but I haven't.
  5. Which park were you riding in LedFTed? I've rode in Waverly Park and the Brickyard. The Brickyard connects to Jefferson Memorial Park in Fairdale. It's a wonder we never got kicked out of those places. I'd love to go back to the brickyard but there are hills back there that I wouldn't ever attempt with a four wheeler.
  6. I sure would like to have been with you on that ride. Most of my rides have been on dirt bikes and it would be hard to pick a best one. I really don't think I've ever had a bad one. It's all good when you're out there with friends.
  7. If you find one that you're interested in post it here. Someone here will probably have had experiences with it and can advise you on what it can or cannot do.

    Weather

Those weather people are as worthless as ! on a boar hog. I haven't saw the official report but we got a tiny bit of ice, a little sleet on top of that and a little bit of snow on top of that. The road in front of my house is clear so I'm sure all the main roads are clear also. It's just fine with me the way it turned out.

Yeah, I'd say you're suffering from the "Brandon Effect." I'm sure the fuel charge will catch up with me very soon. Gasoline near me jumped 26 cents yesterday and more than that a little farther north. I do try very hard to conserve energy by using LED bulbs, turning lights out when not needed and using energy efficient appliances. I also have 6" walls in my house and have 12" to 18" of insulation in my attic. I think we do have some of the lowest electricity rates in the nation and I'm 100% wood heat so I don't have a furnace blower running. @Wilson, It was 2009 when we had our big ice storm. I thought it was longer ago than that but I included a link below. It says that there was 6" to 10" of snow with 1" of ice on top of it. The snow didn't make as much of an impression on me as the ice did. When the trees started breaking there were lots of cracks and pops. During the 1994 storm I don't think we got much ice but did get a record amount of snow for one day. It then dropped down to -22 degrees after the snow. Many businesses shut down for about a week because they couldn't get the snow off of the road after the temperatures dropped. I've got some old VHS video here of that snow storm. I'd have a heart attack if I had an electric bill that high. I think the highest one I've ever had was in the summer and I think it was about $120. When I'm not running AC my bills are usually less than $60 but I expect that to be going up because they factor a fuel charge in.

Hey LedFTed, I saw the forceast earlier today and now they're calling for .250" to .615" of ice and then snow on top of it. I'm sure you and I will get almost the same amounts since you live not too far from me. I need to check the latest forecast and see what they say. Edit; I just saw the 6:00 weather report and they upped it to .250" to .700" for us. If they're right this thing could get ugly.

We're supposed to get an ice storm here starting tomorrow morning at about 7:00 am. They say up to 1/2" but we all know how weather predictions are. The last time we had a bad ice storm here we lost electricity for about a week but that was a long time ago. I've got a generator but it hasn't been started since the last ice storm so I don't even know if I can get it started. I'm not too worried about it for myself at least. I have my wood stove and have a gas cook stove. I hate it for other people that aren't set up for it though. Snow can be bad but ice is treacherous.

    Fish

I used to gig for fish in the springtime when the fish were spawning in the creeks. If you time it right there will be plenty of fish in the riffles. I really need to go again because I've read that if you pressure cook suckers it will soften the bones and you can cook them like salmon patties. I'd like to can some of them. The first time I took my oldest son gigging we got into a lot of suckers. He wasn't very old and he went into a frenzy of trying to gig them all. His up and down stabbing was like a semi-auto rifle being fired several times. It's a wonder that none of us got stuck in the foot by him.

  15. Sorry but I don't. I went to Utah a very long time ago and it was a vacation sightseeing trip. We did camp out near Bryce Canyon in the summertime and if I remember correctly it got pretty chilly there during the night but that may not be the norm. You might try some satellite images and see how the campgrounds are laid out. Sounds like a good time.
  16. I've been to Utah and it is very scenic. If you can take some time to sightsee. I'd like to go back if I ever get a chance.

Was that $45 for a face cord (a rick)? Most people I know call a cord a 4' X 4' X 8'. Usually three rows about 16" wide, four feet high and eight foot long.
  19. Merry Christmas to all. Here's to hoping next year is a lot better than the last two years.
  20. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. We have a lot to be thankful for.
  21. I put Sta-Flo starch in the little Kawasaki a few months ago and it's still holding great. If it ever starts leaking again I might try some of the water based Slime that Fish was referring to. I didn't even know they made it that way. slow leaking tires - what do you use? - General Chat - ATV Honda

    Wife is Sick

Here's to hoping your wife has a speedy and complete recovery. You're right about health being important and most material possessions don't matter that much. Prayers sent.
  23. Here's one that seems to get some good reviews. It looks like and may be the same as the one I bought from Northern Tools many years ago. I looked at Northern Tools and couldn't find the one that I bought. I know mine does a super good job. I have quite a few chains so I tend to do a lot at one time. I've read where people say an electric grinder wears a chain down too quick but you can set it to take just enough off of the teeth to keep them sharp. Hand sharpening is an art that I haven't come anywhere near to mastering. If I did it more often I know I'd get better but probably not great. Do you or anybody else know of an online source for reasonably priced 5.56 or 223?
  25. Here are the little devils that got me a few weeks ago. I took these pictures today with a 300 mm lens and I still felt like I was too close to them. I always thought they'd have a small hole going into the ground but this one was a lot bigger than I expected.
