This is my 1929 Rumely Do-All tractor. It looks rough but has had a complete mechanical restoration done on it. It took about 15 years to gather the necessary parts to do it. Most of the internal engine stuff had to be made, along with the gearing to run the rear wheels. I decided to keep the original sheet metal, even though it's a mess. They're only original once. I've added wheel extensions and cleats since I took this pic. Last thing to do is add the rear fenders, but I'm having trouble getting started on it. I think they look way better without them. LOL.

had a slight dusting last night, just about melted away this afternoon, the temps now in the upper 30's @Wheeler wow man, that's cold! dangerous cold!

🤯🥶🥶🥶 I haven't seen temps like that since I left North Dakota. Chilly here this morning but not that cold. 0 degrees got about 4 1/2" lastnight plowed the neighborhood, then drove across town to plow out my Mom, city always plows snow in front of everyone's house all over town. Was about a 2ft berm in front of moms house. Then a nice brisk ride to the gas station for a ethanol free fill up.

WOW! This am is the coldest windchill value I’ve EVER experienced! -62c or -79.6f i also found out I need a new battery as the OEM battery in my 2017 wouldn’t start the SUV even plugged in! I had a buddy stop by & pick me up for work. This is CRAZY! Global Warming my azzzz!

This is what the starter motor brush end might look like. Sometimes they can be rebuilt but if you’re not savvy replace or take it to a battery shop

When stuff got that cold in Alberta our equipment ran 24/7 fueled at least twice a day, turn the off in spring....

It's -25 F now and -46 wind-chill. I'll take this over sandals and shorts all day long.

Stay safe wheeler. I’m going fishing in the morning -15 f right now. I just hooked the trailer up and taking the foreman on it’s first cold weather adventure. Let’s see what’s she’s made out of. I’ll take pictures tomorrow.

I'll pull a used shift motor off a 450es engine in the morning , send me your address in a PM , and send you a shift motor and I will pay for the shipping as I owe Retro a few pass it forwards , if it doesn't work , maybe you could use the housing and make two out of one

Case closed. Retro, good call on checking the other direction of motor as it wasn’t working. I pulled the reduction gears, installed it in to use the angle sensor to display gears. Cycled through the gears manually without issues. Up and down and in reverse. Opened the motor on the armature side and here we are. Magnet inside the case cracked. what’s my options? Is OEM the only way to go? Can the armature house be bought separately?

We were spared by the storm here, only got 14-15 inches of snow so far and drifting has been minimal compared to what was expected. The wind shifted to the SW this morning which blew the low hanging (down to treetop level) lake-effect snow clouds back out over the lake, and since there are no mid-upper level clouds in the area, the sun shined through the low haze and my battery bank received a full charge earlier than usual today. This is so easy.... 😂

Even more important than the spout to me is the vent. I bought a bunch of vents on eBay and they were pretty cheap iirc.

Thanks for the welcome! I agree that tractor quality probably peaked in the 60s and 70s. There's plenty of good ones in the previous and later decades, but I think that's when the best ones were made. After that they started to cheapen up a little bit as manufacturers got more competitive and chased profits in exchange for quality. The latest ones suffer with unreliable electronics and bad exhaust aftertreatment systems. Earlier than that and they were still getting stuff sorted out. Poor metallurgy and fluid leaks were really common. My Do-All uses 140W oil in those side gear cases. There's only a felt seal between the wheel hub and the case. The owner's manual says it's normal to leak a half gallon of oil out of each gear case per day! There's also no crank seals, so the oil just drips out the ends when you run it. Kinda funny. Joe

I guess this'd be the wrong weekend to buy your wife flowers, they'd shatter before ya could get them in the house!

i personally use castrol in all my own toys. little on the pricy side ?, but well worth it to me. some things you learn over time, by this i mean before you change oil, you have listened to your engine, after you change the oil, do you hear anything different ?, in my years of doing engine rebuilds, i have used my ears more than worry about how the atv/motorcycle runs in long run. so, with that said..use what oil you want ?..JUST MAKE SURE ITS WET CLUTCH APPROVED !.

sounds like starter brushes to me. D&B electrical sells great starters, i use them alot in the past yrs, never had a problem from them.

From old to new... we have a different style of grader over at the d.o.t, going to have to wait till spring to get a pic....but ours doesn't have a motor.

-12C here overnight, supposed to warm up to around freezing..... might go ice fishing....

That's good info. But I did just hook a regular car battery to the starter, and that did make it turn the engine over, but not as fast or easy as I would have anticipated. The machine is in a warm 60 degree shop as opposed the -16 that it is outside so I thought that big battery would spin it pretty fast.

Owe you bud. I’ll be sure to pay it forward!

Thanks for all the great advice, I will start going through and checking off all the easier stuff before I yank the starter. I have confidence in my new battery it is the right size and is fully charged putting out a little over 13 volts. I have cleaned all connections. So the starter is my main focus I guess.

global warming always makes it colder. sunday forecast 29f high/ 21f at night. was a wind from the north blowing leaving it at 12f wind chill. 21f now, and again tomorrow night. hope it get some of the ticks and chiggers, not to mention skeeters.

Me? No. I have not. All I did a few months ago was pulled it to clean grease and apply new grease. Prior to that the PO never done it so this thing is original since 2004. Thanks! Thanks to everyone also, great pointers and excited to be back to hear that engine tick! Tackle that lol next.

Welcome to ATV Honda Big Moe! It sounds to me like either the ground cable is loose on the starter mounting bolt, or the battery is very weak. Did you put a size14-BS battery in it, or is it a smaller one?

Glad ya found the problem freebo86! Looks like Fishfiles gonna help ya out, thanks Fish! When you get that shift motor freebo86, take it apart and clean the parts up. If there is any corrosion in it use sandpaper to get rid of it. Check that the brushes are free in their holders. Reassemble with syn grease packed in the bearing & bushing & nose shaft seal and wet the rubber sealing gasket on all sides with silicone gasket maker before bolting it back together. You can practice reassembly on your broken one while waiting for the mail if ya have any doubts.... 😎

Yeah, I spill more gas using the environmentally safe cans than the older ones. This Sure Can has been great after two seasons of use. Spendy though.

Hi Good job on the polarizer replacement, sorry to to see that your LCD cracked on you I pretty much only work on the the Rancher 350 and Foreman 450 speedometers, so unfortunately, I do not have an LCD glass for the Rubicon You might be able to find a cheap parts speedometer on ebay that might need to have the film redone I see them from time to time I will keep an eye out as I am always looking for parts Also possible, a member on the forum here might have something kicking around as well

Snow in Ohio May 9th 2020 then again on November 1st. Somehow we really got cheated with less than 6 months without snow. Add that to the list of why 2020 really sucked. picture taken the morning of May 9th 2020
